The Myth of the Machine - 2020 Bentley Tech Tournament

Post by Mike Bentley »

Hi everyone, as alluded to in another thread, with the NSC being pushed out by a year, my writing schedule has cleared up. I'm working on a new tournament called The Myth of the Machine which will be similar to my previous tech tournaments (We Have Never Been Modern, A Culture of Improvement, The Human Use of Human Beings).

Since there's a lot of uncertainty around the quizbowl schedule right now, I'm asking people to fill out the following 2-question survey if they're interested in this tournament. It covers when to host the tournament, whether to prioritize Discord or in-person events, and the format (I'm open to writing 1 or 2 part bonuses). Please fill this out by 3/28: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

The distribution will be the same as The Human Use of Human Beings and should be roughly similar difficulty. As a reminder, that distribution is:

6 Science history and non-computer technology history
5 Computer-related things, although very little actual computer science
5 Business / consumer history related things
2 Misc. Academic usually at least somewhat in the spirit of science, business or tech
2 Misc. Pop Culture usually at least somewhat in the spirit of science, business or tech

If I end up doing bonuses the medium and part parts will probably target medium and hard parts for a pre-natioanls set.

Current plan is 8 packets. I doubt it will be more than that if I do bonuses. If there are no bonuses it's possible there may be one or two more.

IDK if ranking preferences might have been nice--my basic thought is to go for in-person events before online.

Looks like the preference is for in-person, tossup-only events. We'll see how the travel and tournament situation develops this summer. It's still likely I'll do either a more informal playtesting event or a full Discord mirror in the summer, but happy to see this tournament played in person should that be feasible in the coming months.

Since I have about 8 packets written (but not edited) already I'll shoot for 10 total packets.

I'm open to hosting a second mirror of this tournament in October for people who weren't able to make the first one, provided there's enough interest. Unless there's a ton of interest it will most likely be a shootout. Fill out this Doodle poll by the end of this week: https://doodle.com/poll/5mh5ch6xw5cwieyu

I'll release the set in November.
