It's Time To D-D-D-D....Duel! (Challenge: Columbia vs. Chicago)

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

Given the unfortunate necessity of cancelling ACF Nationals recently, Columbia A would like to challenge Chicago A to a three (or more!) game showmatch on questions at ACF Nationals level or higher.

The specific details would need to be worked out, questions procured, etc. and, should Chicago accept this challenge, I would be happy to coordinate this with them and figure things out. I have several ideas in mind for question sources. I would personally like the event would take place over Zoom and for it to be either recorded or livestreamed so that others would be able to watch and have some sort of "culminating showdown" for the season.

A Yu-Gi-Oh match is composed of three duels. I suggest that Columbia and Chicago B have a play-in game to conclude ours– the winner can then play Chicago A.

wouldn't Columbia first play Chicago, then both teams would have the option to swap in players from their side decks for the following game

Yeah the goofiness of my post aside, I do mean this sincerely - I think a lot of folks want to see this happen, I'd obviously like to see this happen, of course it's not incumbent upon Chicago to accept but they should be prepared for the memes to come...

I will contribute as well. I think one of the things that people always want is a thrilling finals. And I don't mind stepping up to help if that's something we can do to make the community feel like we had a champion crowned this year.

If the parties will let me head edit this,

I would be willing to coral folk and help edit those 3 packets to crown a winner. The top 8 teams* would be invited and it would be single elimination. Teams are free to decline this extremely informal gathering. I think that's the most fair for all involved.

Yeah my phone seems to have failed with the quote function and I can't fix it by editing somehow. Ah well.

Regardless, I definitely could produce a hype video. Even if Chicago doesn't want to participate, I think Ike's proposed format would be very fun. And if this "duel" doesn't play out the way proposed, I think it's worth having some discussion on how to have a season-ender.

Well duh I realize it's a team game! Yes, and there's a reason head to head tiebreakers are not used. But we would be more than happy to play in any case.

As a member of a team that would at least potentially be interested in some kind of season ending event, if anything does actually come from this post I think it'd be worth considering a less strict definition of top 8 than just straight up using ACF's A values, since those are meant for qualification and not necessarily ideal differentiation of top teams. For instance, things like SOS would end up hurting teams like Texas and just hosting would hurt teams like Florida in this scenario, each of which had legitimate claims for top 8 this year. To throw out a suggestion, I think considering TO and Fall Open results (the closest to a Nats-level set we got this year) somehow would balance out this a bit better.

Edit: Or now that the postseason poll is up, perhaps wait until that is finished and use those results for this?

Knowing several players on both teams, I feel like I am well prepared to write one of my universally well-received Teddy Atlas style "tale of the tapes" for this, complete with notes on the producers of questions, the strategic styles of the teams, the "x-factor" of Jacob Reed's science knowledge, world-ecological anecdotes and so on.

You know, I'm curious. If this were to happen I'd love to see some type of score bug implemented for the hypothetical live stream to give it a better look. I volunteer to at least help figure out how to get a score bug to work, and perhaps other logistical aspects, contingent on the date.

We still did the annual Oxford - Cambridge Varsity match when Cambridge A was routinely outperformed by Oxford C in tournaments. You just need to mythologise the Battle of the High Cs, or something like that, and it doesn't matter if one team seems to be obviously better.

well here I thought the Battle City analogy went:

Chicago A - Kaiba (obvious analogy: big, intimidating, rich, doesn't need a millennium item to win tournaments because who needs millennium items when you've been playing for a long time and have lots of money to throw at things)

Illinois A - Yugi (biasly putting ourselves as protagonists and Auroni Gupta as a clear millennium item that takes us from a young scrapy team to a "seems to know everything" team that also "seems to have aged")

Colombia - Marik (out of the picture most of the time, seems wicked, but that's just because Will really wants a title, and that's why he's the Millenium Rod of the team)

Chicago B - Joey (scrapy, overall good, sometimes makes dumb mistakes but always improving, doesn't have a millennium item, but can definitely outdraw you any given packet with time wizard, baby dragon, and red-eyes black dragon all quite strong)

If you think I took this analogy too far, I don't mean anything serious by this (not trying to offend anyone) and am just having some fun during a finals study break. Love all of you and hope you're mentally taking care of yourself during the pandemic.

I respect that other people may not enjoy or feel as comfortable with online play, or find it so decisively inferior a product that they decline to participate. I hope to see Jacob and his teammates at ACF Nationals 2021, should it happen. It will be an honor to defend the ACF Nationals title as part of the two-year reigning champion club.

just posting memes/image macros is technically against the rules, so you'll have to start accusing each other of cowardice/posting extreme cringe the old-fashioned way

Even in AHAN Jr.? I assume that's where Will meant to post this whole thread.

In all sincerity, I think this thread has near reached the limits of its utility since it appears that any sort of match is unlikely to be arranged in a satisfactory manner for both teams. I'm actually quite tickled by Jacob's response above, I personally think it's hilarious, seems like a fine closure to this particular instance of memetic rivalry. Plus, I got a new avatar out of it!

To end on a semi-serious note: Hopefully we can all agree that THE UNSTOPPABLE Kai Smith would make an amazing candidate for narrating a series of mini-hype and team profile videos for next year's Nationals. I loved the plan for a proper team program for this year's Nats, and think we can do a lot more to create social media excitement and joy for all involved. We could all use it these days, and I hope next year's Nats can be a roaring comeback for the competition we all love that has sadly been temporarily snuffed by this awful pandemic.

I miss you all. Stay safe, stay home when you can, and above all stay well.

and we have our color commentator

(I actually did laugh at Jacob's post, it's a low-effort but appropriately thematic dig)
