Psycho Killer vs. Ohio
- I'd have voted for this song even if it were up against Bohemian Rhapsody.

Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here
- Pink Floyd's lyrics get deeper every time you hear them. The Who only managed to pull off something similar with one couplet in this song.

Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain
- There's a reason that FM's "The Dance" reunion starts with this song.

Let It Be vs. American Girl
- But there's no way I'm voting for this song in the next round, no matter which of the two it ends up against.

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio
--Man, Psycho Killer is going to get to the round of eight!

Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here
--I absolutely love both of these bands and both of these songs, but The Who's song really brings it.

Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain
--I was sorely tempted to pick a Fleetwood Mac song I think is like the fifth best on its album, but the mystique (some might say overrated status) of "Stairway" makes it win for me. Hey, did I tell y'all that I had a neighbor who was a Seventh Day Adventist who told me about backward masking about Satan on this song when we were in middle school? We spent a long time trying to make it work, but alas we never actually conjured him. Weak.

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio
I like the Talking Heads, but it was an absolute travesty that this song upset "Bohemian Rhapsody", and so I'd be voting against it out of protest even if I didn't believe "Ohio" was a superior song. Which I do. Having more than one instrumental segment also helps.

Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here
"Wish You Were Here" is sorta similar to "Won't Get Fooled Again", but uses its time much more efficiently. Lots of Who songs have what I would call flab on them, something I'm personally quite familiar with.

Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain
There's no bad choice here; I'm going to side with Led Zeppelin because it cuts harder - the brilliant instrumental at the end is peak Zep, even if I could take or leave much of the first half. But I could pick the other, depending on which day it was.

Let It Be vs. American Girl
It's hard to do simple and beautiful (but also deceptively complex) like the Beatles, that's why they're the Beatles. This probably isn't in my top ten Tom Petty songs, so I don't find this choice difficult.

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio Obviously I've been stanning Ohio for a while now, but I don't plan to stop. Every single element works. The lyrics are timely and trenchant. That the song is an iconic representation of its era doesn't hurt.
Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here If this and Ohio both win, next round is going to be tough. I said everything I have to say about Wish You Were Here last round, and it's all still true.
Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain Two great songs, but I can't vote against the band of the '70s. Can't be mad either way though.
Let It Be vs. American Girl Still don't get Tom Petty

Psycho Killer vs. Ohio - Ohio is of the 70s. Raw, sharp, guitar that gets you. Talking heads had nowhere to go but up from Psycho Killer
Won’t Get Fooled Again vs. Wish You Were Here. Wish You Were Here has the groove and the groove is soverign.
Stairway to Heaven vs. The Chain. To quote another 70s song - "I still sing the old songs you taught me. I still Pray to Jesus now and then."
Let It Be vs. American Girl - don't particularly care for Tom Petty, but he's miles ahead of the Limey swill known as Let it Be.

PS--Can't wait till tomorrow to hear Dylan's new album Rough and Rowdy Ways. "Murder Most Foul" is a fantastic epic.

Proud Mary vs. Long Train Runnin’
- The Doobie Brothers have been putting out some nice versions of their old stuff that they filmed during the quarantine.

Born to Run vs. Layla

What’s Going On vs. Beast of Burden
It's only fitting that the Stones got this far, but this song just isn't their strongest. Another thing going for What's Going On - it's the first album to give full credit to the musicians in the Funk Brothers of the original Motown studio, and they won a grammy for their performance of it with Chaka Khan almost 20 years ago.

Superstition vs. Midnight Train to Georgia
- That great drum beat leading this thing off? That's Stevie playing. He plays everything on this track except the sax and trumpet.

Proud Mary vs. Long Train Runnin’
--I can't believe I have to vote for this song at this stage of the tournament.

Born to Run vs. Layla
--I reckon "Tangled up in Blue" would've lost to "Born to Run," and I would be at peace with that. At this point I'm pretty sure I won't vote against Springsteen for the rest of this tournament. But Clapton sucks as a person and I'm still unhappy "Layla" took out a Dylan song. PS--Rough and Rowdy Ways is as incredible as I figured it would be.

What’s Going On vs. Beast of Burden
--Tough for me to vote against the Stones, but Marvin's song seems way more significant, especially these days.

Superstition vs. Midnight Train to Georgia
--So how exactly does a 13-month-old baby break a looking glass, anyway?

Proud Mary vs. Long Train Runnin’
This contest has increased my appreciation of these songs more than pretty much all the other songs in the contest, even though I had heard them both before many times. Without love, where would you be right now?

Born to Run vs. Layla
I love Layla, but I'm voting against it in this matchup. Most Bruce songs are much better live than in the studio, but they nailed this one in the studio.

What’s Going On vs. Beast of Burden
I honestly can't get into either of these songs despite being from great artists. I'm voting for the better lyrics.

Superstition vs. Midnight Train to Georgia
Midnight Train is great, but this is still an easy decision. Stevie Ray Vaughan could play this song too, though the Stevie Wonder version is probably still better.

Since there's been an interruption in our regular service, I'm going to take advantage of this and make up for my sloth:

Proud Mary vs. Long Train Runnin’
I can appreciate both, but I enjoyed every second of "Long Train Runnin'", which I can't say about "Proud Mary" - it just didn't strike me as hard as I thought it would (and like Tina promised it would at the song's incipit). "LTR" is a dark horse, mark my words.

Born to Run vs. Layla
One good song versus half of one. Real talk here: the second half of "Layla" is meandering and kinda pretentious - it sounds like the background music that used to play on The Weather Channel. The first half is excellent (and the acoustic version, also a classic), but maybe we could have just stopped there and saved us all some time.

What’s Going On vs. Beast of Burden
It's been four or five listens now, and I just can't get into "What's Going On". I swear, I tried. "Beast of Burden" is solid B+ Rolling Stones, so I guess I'll have to go with that.

Superstition vs. Midnight Train to Georgia
"Superstition" is a force of nature. "Midnight Train to Georgia" is a comforting glass of warm milk. Too bad to see it go.

When I started this, I wanted to pepper in essays about things, and then I got lazy. One thing I did want to write about was what might be the worst year in popular music history: 1974.

This is an idea Todd in the Shadows expanded upon in his excellent One Hit Wonderland video on Paper Lace’s “The Night Chicago Died”. The #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 list from this year is pretty rough. This is, generally speaking, an awful year of hit songs. Looking at that list, there are some decent or even good songs! There’s “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce, “Bennie and the Jets” by Elton John, “Band on the Run” by Paul McCartney & Wings, and “Nothing from Nothing” by Billy Preston. These are all very, very good songs. There’s a couple other notable ones that aren’t quite as good, but are still as good, including Stevie Wonder & John Lennon singles.

This year also had #1 songs that are outright novelties with little redeeming features – “The Streak” by Ray Stevens and “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas. I’m not sure if Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” is a novelty song, but it is unrelenting cheese (which I have an admitted weakness for, thanks GotG). The only artist with multiple number one hits this year was John Denver, who had “Annie’s Song” and “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” aka “songs that are not ‘Take Me Home Country Roads,’ so who could care.” Cher had a number one with “Dark Lady.” Ringo Starr hit number one before Lennon with the cringey “You’re Sixteen.” Terry Jacks sat on top of the chart for three straight weeks with the melancholy schmaltz of “Seasons in the Sun,” which is one of my absolutely least favorite songs. When an Olivia Newton-John song might be among the top half of the number one songs of the year, it’s a rough year.

With 192 songs starting this bracket out, you would assume about 19 or so coming from each year with an even distribution. 1974 had five. “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “(Looking for) the Heart of Saturday Night” by Tom Waits, “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” by Barry White, “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” by Bobby “Blue” Bland, and “$1000 Wedding” by Gram Parsons.

The top songs of the year from Acclaimed Music aren’t amazing, either. “No Woman, No Cry” by Bob Marley tops that list, deservedly so (the live version from the next year is what I included, because it’s superior). The neighboring eyars outshine it overall, though. 1973 has 27 of the 1000 best songs ever per the site. 1975 has 20. 1974 has 11. And I wouldn’t consider many of those ’74 songs to be fantastic. I have no recollection of Joni Mitchell’s “Help Me.” Queen has many songs better than “Killer Queen.” Kraftwerk’s very important, but “Autobahn” isn’t exactly a song I enjoy listening to.

There is good music to enjoy out of this year – Stevie Wonder released Fulfillingness’ First Finale is great, if a bit of a step back from Talking Book and Innversions that came out the two previous years. Gram Parsons’ Grievous Angel and Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark are both very good. But compared to the rest of the decade, this year is extremely weak.

Wish You Were Here vs. Ohio
Let It Be vs. Stairway to Heaven
Born to Run vs. Long Train Runnin’
Superstition vs. What’s Going On

I haven't agreed with every outcome in this contest, but I must say that there is not a bad song in this list. I mean, there's absolutely no way that Long Train Runnin’ is the best song of the 70s, but it's a very good song.

Also, if the one good song from 1974 is Free Bird, then it's not a waste of a year, and Help Me is one of Joni Mitchell's best.

Wish You Were Here vs. Ohio
--I'm warming to the idea that this could win the whole tournament, even though there's not a chance I would've said it's the best song of the whole decade. I'm starting to see this tournament like the NCAA tournament: a song can get hot, get some favorable matchups, and go the whole way, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.

Let It Be vs. Stairway to Heaven
--I"m going with Zeppelin only based on my sense that their song is more 70s-ish to me.

Born to Run vs. Long Train Runnin’
--This is it: the best song of the '70s. It should hang a zero on the Doobies this round.

Superstition vs. What’s Going On
--Tough, but fair.

Both of these songs are boring, overwrought, British and not these bands' best work of the 70s.
