2020 ACF Fall at UChicago-Great Lakes (10/17/2020)

Post by On a lurgid bee »

I am pleased to announce that the Great Lakes site of 2020 ACF Fall will be held at UChicago on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

The tournament will take place virtually on Discord. The opening meeting will begin at 8:45 EASTERN TIME and gameplay will begin at 9:00 EASTERN. I, Matthew Lehmann, will be the tournament director. Please direct any questions about this site to me at [email protected]

Eligibility
In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2020–2021 school year are eligible to play 2020 ACF Fall. ACF’s full eligibility rules are available here. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules. There will be some modifications to the standard ruleset to account for the differences between online and in-person gameplay which will be published at a later date.

Registration
Fill out the central 2020 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here. The field for each site can be found here.

If possible, teams should register for the site that is geographically closest to them and/or is in the region they would normally attend. The field cap for all sites is 18, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist or potentially assigned to another site. Please register by October 12, 2020.
Fees
  • Base fee: $120
  • New to quizbowl discount: –$80
  • Shorthanded discount (1–2 players): –$60
  • Staffers: –$25 per staffer with a functional laptop. Staffers must register with ACF in advance by filling out this form.
    https://forms.gle/DSKTwvYGnivEWytj7
The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2019, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

Packet Submission
Unlike past iterations of the set, no teams are required to submit questions in order to play the tournament. However, ACF still needs high-quality, half-packet submissions from teams to complete the set.

Below is the submission schedule for ACF Fall. All deadlines are at 11:59 p.m. PDT. The maximum packet discounts have increased since last year; furthermore, all submitting teams are eligible for an additional −$20 quality discount if their questions are particularly polished and usable, up to a maximum discount of −$60. Teams may submit a maximum of one half-packet.
  • August 23, 2020: –$50
  • August 30, 2020: –$40
  • September 6, 2020: –$30
  • September 13, 2020: -$20
  • September 20, 2020: -$10
If you would like to submit a half-packet, fill out this form. ACF will respond with a half-packet template specifying which categories you are assigned to write.

Each submission consists of 12 tossups and 12 bonuses. Before writing, please review ACF's packet submission guidelines and stick to the format provided. Answers should generally emphasize playability over creativity – aim for creative and interesting clues with straightforward answerlines. These 5 model tossups reflect the difficulty and style to aim for. When finished, submit your half-packet by emailing it to [email protected].

In another change from last year, your assigned half-packet will ask for questions from more specific categories within the distribution. For instance, instead of being assigned an “American Literature” tossup, you might be asked to write a question on a 20th-century American poem, or an Economics bonus instead of “Social Science/Philosophy.” This should reduce redundancy in submissions and maximize the number of submitted questions we can use, without being too constraining. The submission form offers space to indicate your writing interests in each category, which we will do our best to accommodate.

Field updates will be posted here for convenience once the field begins to materialize. Please note that this is the Great Lakes site and thus we'll be expecting teams from that region rather than from the Midwest.

There is a Northeast/Upper Mid-Atlantic high school mirror hosted by Ridgewood High School. I haven't heard from any teams that are interested in hosting high school mirrors in other regions, but you may be able to register for the Ridgewood mirror if the TD agrees and there is space.

Thank you to everyone who came out to play and staff today!

Congratulations to Ohio State A (William Rauschenberg, Edward Liu, Luke Van De Weghe, and Noah Bigger) who won a one game final over Case Western A. Case Western A (Henry Greentree, Saketh Dendi, Jeremy Nguyen, and Winston Kam) placed second and Michigan B (Robert Dedvukaj, Nora Desmond, Sara Stawarz) placed third. Case Western B (Aidan Bohac, Henry Blyth, Weillin Feng, and Zahraa Abdulameer) were the third place DII team.

Full stats can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6566/
Prelim and Combined stats are up, playoff stats and brackets will be up either tonight or sometime tomorrow. Some of the packet notes are off due to some unfortunate choices by SQBS, those will be cleaned up tomorrow.

The set discussion should be up shortly. I hope everyone had a great time, and I hope to see you all again at future tournaments!
