1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"
I want to like "The Message", I really do, and it would normally win my vote—if not for the casual homophobic slurs. Not only does "f*g" catch the listener off guard, the choice to be explicitly non-intersectional weakens the song's overall message. It comes across as especially tone-deaf when you consider that the song was written in the early days of the AIDS crisis.

To be clear, I'm not saying that anyone is a bad person for liking this song, or that Grandmaster Flash had some secret homophobic agenda. Cultural norms change, as do people, and "The Message" will always be a milestone in hip hop history. My vote probably says more about me than the song, and frankly, I still might've voted for it if "Need You Tonight" didn't have that sweet hook.

8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"
I will never get tired of that guitar riff.

Now, why does "Money For Nothing" get a pass for a homophobic slur while "The Message" doesn't? The difference, at least to me, is context. It's obvious that the lyrics are from the perspective of a narrow-minded character, and taken as a whole, the song is a pretty clever critique of a certain strain of masculinity.

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"
"Edge of Seventeen" doesn't deserve to get knocked out this early.

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"
There's a lot more to "Come on Eileen" and the band that released it than you might think. This video is a pretty good rundown of their work, which is all worth checking out.

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"
My dad composed "Jump (For My Love)", so I'm obligated to view that as the best Pointer Sisters song, but "I'm So Excited" is still an iconic 80s bop.

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"

The riff to Need You Tonight is truly great and the riff to "Celebrated Summer" is 4x better.

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"

i almost voted for both of these, but the Bangles sound so detached.

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"

matt wakes up like "hmmm today i will listen to the more palatable form of homophobia due to my racism"

yep Dire Straits receives a pass because ur favourite white boys get the benefit of "context" and "clever critiques" while the first widely successful political rap track isn't "intersectional" enough for your tastes xd

I would like to politely request that we not accuse one another of racism and/or homophobia in our friendly, polite, and highbrow discussion of which songs from the 1980s are better than others.

Staff note: I don't mind flippant jokes or exaggerating things to make a point, but do try to keep things civil. I also don't really have an objection to the thread generating some more in-depth discussions based on people's critiques (it's certainly more interesting to read than a list of contentless votes), but I'm also willing to split particularly fertile discussions off if they threaten to take over the thread.

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"
- Nice beat, very nice. Not a big rap fan, but Grandmaster Flash is too iconic not to respect.

8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"
- Dire Straits continues the climb to the championship. "Love Over Gold" is better than "Money for Nothing".

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"
- I still have no idea what a white-winged dove sings like, but Stevie sings mellifluously.

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"
- George Michael has the musical inspiration of stewed broccoli.

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"
- Both great songs. I'll go with the more culturally significant song.

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"
- Eh, both of these are inferior to those in the above matchup.

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"
- Legitimate title contender. Very 80s but in a good way; not overplayed like many other potential heavyweights.

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"
"I'm So Excited" is as good as "Don't Stop Believin'" and far less played; Journey deserves better than a first-round exit though.

Finally, I get to rate various stuff from my fraternity's old 80s parties. Voting purely based on how much I like the songs, no other criteria.

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"

8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"

Shit, this one is hard.

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"

Wow, "Walk Like an Egyptian" is way worse than I remember.

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"

I'm freaking sick of Don't Stop Believin' so this is mainly a spite vote, but "I'm So Excited" is at least as good.

In the Air Tonight losing to Crazy Train has inspired me to start voting in this bracket

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"
Apparently Q-Tip once said the last verse of this song is the greatest verse of all time. I really can't disagree.

8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"
If this was just the first two minutes of Money for Nothing, it would blow Jessie's Girl out of the water and maybe win this whole bracket. Unfortunately, the rest of the song doesn't come close to living up to the promise of that drum intro and guitar riff. Jessie's Girl, on the other hand, delivers from the start and then keeps on building and building.

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"
God this is hard. Apologies to Tracy Chapman, but when in doubt, I'm going with the banger.

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"
Faith has a better peak, but Super Freak is more consistent

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"
Not really related, but just wanna let everyone know this exists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-pCPymtSTc

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"

I don't even know if I should vote. I never went to Chess King, and I spent much of the 1980s listening to music from the 60s and 70s.

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight"
I'll vote for the historically important song. It's not like I would spend my free time listening to either of these songs.

8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"
Whether or not you like Dire Straits or Money For Nothing, it's important to keep in mind that it is up against Rick Springfield here.

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen"
I'm hoping Fast Car or Super Freak wins this quadrant.

4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak"
U Can't Touch This

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'"
ZZ Top has made some good music.

3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself"
I knew some people in high school who were obsessed with Duran Duran. One of them got a backstage pass and was shocked when they were less into her than she was into them.

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"
Walk Like an Egyptian can be used to teach cube root functions.

2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited"
When my son was three months old, I held him up to the TV so that he could see the White Sox win the World Series. It's the only time it has happened in his lifetime, my lifetime, and my dad's lifetime. Now I'm teaching my son to drive, and the White Sox hired a drunk driver, but we don't stop believin', because some will win, some will lose, some were born to sing the blues.

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" vs. 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight" -- Need You Tonight is a great '80s pop song, and a surprisingly strong contender for a 16 seed. But The Message is both really good and musically important in a way that Need You Tonight isn't.
8 Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl" vs. 9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing" -- Money for Nothing is not my favorite Dire Straits song, even restricting to the 80s to eliminate Sultans of Swing (Brothers in Arms would be my pick). However, it's a classic riff and the Sting guest takes it over the top.
5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" vs. 12 Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen" -- I hate Edge of Seventeen. It grates on me. I would vote for literally every other song on the board over it.
4 George Michael, "Faith" vs. 13 Rick James, "Super Freak" -- Tough matchup here as I leaned back and forth.
6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" vs. 11 ZZ Top, "Gimme All Your Lovin'" -- Another one I found tough. Both of these have strengths and weaknesses, but I think 99 Luftballons has more cultural impact and more lyrical interest to me.
3 Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf" vs. 14 NWA, "Express Yourself" -- The classic Duran Duran song. Highly influential.
7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" vs. 10 The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian" -- I just like Come on Eileen a lot. Walk Like an Egyptian is fun, too.
2 Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'" vs. 15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited" -- Begrudgingly voting for Don't Stop Believin' here as I can name a handful of Journey songs I like a heck of a lot better. (Separate Ways would probably be my favorite.)

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" - the first great rap song.

9 Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing" - this isn't the best Dire Straits song - I forget off hand if Romeo & Juliet is from the 80s, but I really like that one a lot. It still has a wonderful lick. I'm surprised by the perpertual popularity of Jessie's Girl. It's... not that good.

5 Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car" - this is such a difficult choice. Edge of Seventeen's got the great riff with the muted strings, but Tracy Chapman's voice and the guitar on Fast Car are so evocative and wonderful.

4 George Michael, "Faith" - Faith's really catchy and well constructed. The guitar intro is great. The bass line really drives it. This is one of Michael's best vocal performances.

6 Nena, "99 Luftballons" - this is one I'm less into than other winners I'm picking, but it's still a really solid song. The fact that it is one of the few songs to gain popularity in the U.S. when recorded in a non-English language (before the K-Pop explosion) says a lot.

14 NWA, "Express Yourself" - I'm not bumping NWA in this match up.

7 Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come on Eileen" - Come on Eileen is one of of my favorites of the 80s. It's a really unique song with heavy reliance on a fiddle. The bridge is a masterpiece. Dexys Midnight Runners are one of the most overlooked bands of the 80s in the U.S.

15 The Pointer Sisters, "I'm So Excited" - I think Excited is catchier.

QUADRANT VICE RESULTS: ROUND OF 64

1 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "The Message" 31, 16 INXS, "Need You Tonight" 5

In a Bidenesque turnaround, Journey was down big early because of older, angry voters, and then crept into the lead through late-arriving ballots

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"
I'm a big Springsteen fan, but I've never loved Born in the USA the song that much.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday"
Tough choice but...come on, it's Blue Monday.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?" - I was kind of surprised by my reaction to this, but hey-this is a good song.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black" - This was a tough matchup. AC/DC gets it because 1. That opening and frenetic energy throughout the song and 2. In my opinion, Born in the USA runs on for about 10 seconds too long at the end.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama" - Panama is a good, fun song. However, I am not a fan of songs taking about a minute to start with their lyrics.

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday" - It took me about 5 seconds of the start of Blue Monday to realize who my vote was going to be for.

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing" - This was also a toucher matchup than I thought it would be at first.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades"

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"

2 Michael Jackson, "Beat It" vs. 15 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers,"Islands in the Stream"

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?"
--Oh, baby, we're on our way to making this 16 over 1 upset happen!!! If you listen to each of these songs alone in a quiet room, I think Pixies win every time.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"
--Tough, as Bruce's song is more interesting and nuanced than it's ever gotten credit for, but "Back in Black" smashes.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"
--Can we eliminate George Michael entirely so early? I think we can.

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday"

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing"
--This is an '80s bracket, so I'll go with the clearly more '80s song.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades"
A shame, as "Ace of Spades" is a fun song; the performance on The Young Ones is amusing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR3xwENK7Jo

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"
--But the Funboy Three Version is also very good.

I'll admit this Madonna song is a vulnerable #1 seed, but not to the Pixies.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?"
I sort of knew the melody and gist going into it so I must have heard "Like a Virgin" at some point in the past, but I was surprised how unimpressive it was. A mildly catchy tune repeated over and over, lyrics that don't really go anywhere, even a music video that looks both overproduced in a very 80s way without being sufficiently zany in a very 80s way. Every other Madonna song I've heard I've enjoyed or at the very least recognized why it would be a hit song, and this one I'm legitimately confused by.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"
This is another case of an artist whose music I usually like with a song that feels very one-note. I may also be unreasonably annoyed by slant rhyming "refinery" in two different lyrics.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday"
These are two of my four favorite in the bracket, so it's unfortunate they're up against each other. In the end I think the perfect connection between music and lyrics of "I Wanna Dance" push it over the edge for me. It also expresses a sentiment that is less common than one might expect in pop music. Not a love song to a specific person, or anguish at being alone, or even really a party song, but a song about the excitement, and sometimes wistfulness, of the anticipation of meeting someone new. It does that really well in a fun and catchy way.
All that being said, if New Order had included the delightfully nonsensical spoken lines from "Bizarre Love Triangle" on this track I probably would have voted for it.

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me"
vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing"
Chris Borglum won me over with his "80s representativeness" argument. "Don't You Want Me" is also a pretty good song and "Sexual Healing" is a good but not great Marvin Gaye song.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades"
I was a little surprised "When Doves Cry" was chosen as the Prince submission, but it's still great.

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"
The mixing for "Our Lips Are Sealed" sounds very odd to me, like the instruments are drowning out the vocals. And I don't think they're supposed to. Maybe this is just poor audio equipment, or my own impending mortality.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?"
Like a Virgin was a part of world change, and I'm not a Pixies fan.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"
Bruce is the better act, but Back in Black is the better song.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"
Van Halen was the band when I was in high school.

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday"
Whitney Houston could sing. New Order is overrated at 13.

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing"
Sexual Healing is a great song. Don't You Want Me is more 80s, but I don't care.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades"
When Doves Cry is awesome.

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"
I'm not a fan of either song. One of my former students called one of the Go-Gos a loser on The Surreal Life, so I'm casting a sympathy vote.

2 Michael Jackson, "Beat It" vs. 15 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, "Islands in the Stream"
On the one hand, I'll be upset if Michael Jackson wins the whole tournament. On the other hand, I'm upset that Islands in the Stream is still around.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?"
"Like a Virgin" isn't even the best Madonna song in this tournament.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"
Republicans misusing "Born in the USA" has started to become my favorite American tradition.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"
That saxophone riff has so thoroughly embedded itself in the public consciousness that it's easy to forget how boring the rest of the song is. I wouldn't call "Panama" a great song, but it has both an iconic riff and other interesting elements.

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday"
When I think "big 80s chorus", this is one of the two songs that comes to mind (the other is Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear it For the Boy", which I was sad to see omitted from this bracket).

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing"

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades"
The first time I heard this song, it good stuck in my head for the better part of a month. It became my absolute least favorite song after the first week, which caused me to write off the rest of Prince's catalog until college. A decade later, it's actually pretty good.

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"

2 Michael Jackson, "Beat It" vs. 15 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, "Islands in the Stream"
"Beat It" was, if I recall correctly, the third song or fourth song I put on my iPod. Still slaps.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?" - Now if "Like a Surgeon" were up instead...

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black" - Yes, let's defeat the Dross!

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama" - Even if Van Halen didn't have a catalog of jams and Wham hadn't made the Worst New Year's Song Ever™, "Careless Whisper" would still be hot trash compared to "Panama" or anything else really.

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vs. 13 New Order, "Blue Monday" - "Blue Monday" sounds better, but I'd never heard it before and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is hurt mostly by being overplayed; also I can't vote against an icon of the decade this early.

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" vs. 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing" - For feeling so overdubbed the Human League still sounds terrible.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" vs. 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades" - "Why do we scream at each other?": a fitting question for Motorhead's members to ponder as they head home.

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" vs. 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" - Tips for avoiding "We Got the Beat" as the Go-Gos selection. Both of these are pretty good nu-wave, but I just like the sound of the Tears better than Belinda.

2 Michael Jackson, "Beat It" vs. 15 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, "Islands in the Stream" - I venture to say maybe a country-folk tune shouldn't be chosen over one the King of Pop's best tunes in an 80s bracket.

EDIT: I'm bad at formatting, let's put this up here.

That's fair, I should have specified that I couldn't vote against an icon notable in the field of music - I'm still fine with voting against George Michael's ill-defined form of vapid self-expression.

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" vs. 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?"

It feels super weird that Madonna is on track to get eliminated this early in favor of a distinctly quizbowlcore band, but I like The Pixies and this is one of the more dated-sounding Madonna songs.

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA"
vs. 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black"

I really hope Springsteen doesn't win, but I've just never vibed to AC/DC.

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" vs. 12 Van Halen, "Panama"

Ah, the song with that sax riff. Right.

QUADRANT MAGNUM: ROUND OF 64 RESULTS

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" 5, 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?" 19
it was a mistake from the first to let indie bands into this tournament

8 Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA" 8, 9 AC/DC, "Back in Black" 16

5 Wham!, "Careless Whisper" 10, 12 Van Halen, "Panama" 14

4 Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" 11, 13 New Order, "Blue Monday" 9.5

6 Human League, "Don't You Want Me" 13, 11 Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing" 9.5
"Sexual Healing" is barely a song; it has no melody and no lyrics beyond Marvin vaguely free-associating around the title phrase. A testament to the man's charisma.

3 Prince, "When Doves Cry" 22.5, 14 Motorhead, "Ace of Spades" 0
first shutout of the tournament

7 The Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed" 7.5, 10 Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" 16.5

2 Michael Jackson, "Beat It" 22.5, 15 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, "Islands in the Stream" 1.5
heading for the stars

1 Madonna, "Like a Virgin" 5, 16 Pixies, "Where is My Mind?" 19
No matter what else happens, this tournament is now a success, and my affection for the QB community has grown immensely.

1 Michael Jackson, "Billie Jean" vs. 16 Billy Bragg, "A New England"
--This song sounded so new and amazing when it came out, and it's now-dated video was mesmerizing.

8 Metallica, "Master of Puppets" vs. 9 David Bowie, "Modern Love"
--As I've noted, this isn't among the top three songs on that Bowie album, but Metallica has never been my bag.

5 U2, "With or Without You" vs. 12 Def Leppard, "Photograph"
--There are so many better U2 songs, yeesh.

4 The Police, "Every Breath You Take" vs. 13 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, "Free Fallin'"
--There are so may better Police and Tom Petty songs, yeesh.

6 Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" vs. 11 Peter Gabriel, "In Your Eyes"
--This shouldn't be close; it will be interesting to see if it is.

3 Queen and David Bowie, "Under Pressure" vs. 14 Dolly Parton, "9 to 5"
--I wonder if the recent universal, bipartisan, young-and-old adoration of Dolly Parton will carry her to a win here. My wife watched (and fell asleep to) the "Holly Dolly" special on CBS last night, and let me tell you, it made me want to never hear Dolly Parton again.

7 Guns n'Roses, "Sweet Child o'Mine" vs. 10 The B-52s, "Love Shack"
--I used to really like "Sweet Child" but have grown tired of it. Still, the opening guitar, damn.

2 Bon Jovi, "Livin' On A Prayer" vs. 15 Public Enemy, "Fight the Power"
--Tommy and Gina have been divorced for like 25 years now, and both of them voted for Trump.

1 Michael Jackson,"Billie Jean" vs. 16 Billy Bragg, "A New England"
I don't want to vote for Michael Jackson, but sometimes his songs are just better than the competition.

8 Metallica, "Master of Puppets" vs. 9 David Bowie, "Modern Love"
Probably not the best from either act, but Modern Love is in the ballpark.

5 U2, "With or Without You" vs. 12 Def Leppard, "Photograph"
Simple rule: If a song is on The Joshua Tree, it's great.

4 The Police, "Every Breath You Take" vs. 13 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, "Free Fallin'"
I like the Police more than Petty, but Petty is good and this song is good.

6 Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" vs. 11 Peter Gabriel, "In Your Eyes"
Joy Division sucks.

3 Queen and David Bowie, "Under Pressure" vs. 14 Dolly Parton, "9 to 5"
9 to 5 is a good song, but this is still an easy decision.

7 Guns n'Roses, "Sweet Child o'Mine" vs. 10 The B-52s, "Love Shack"
Both of these songs are absolutely great. I'm fine with Sweet Child o'Mine winning it all.

2 Bon Jovi, "Livin' On A Prayer" vs. 15 Public Enemy, "Fight the Power"
Both of these songs are good. Fight the Power is more original in its way.

1 Michael Jackson,"Billie Jean" vs. 16 Billy Bragg, "A New England"
Billie Jean is honestly one of the most interesting songs to ever chart at 1.

8 Metallica, "Master of Puppets" vs. 9 David Bowie, "Modern Love"
Master of Puppets is long.

6 Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" vs. 11 Peter Gabriel, "In Your Eyes"

3 Queen and David Bowie, "Under Pressure" vs. 14 Dolly Parton, "9 to 5"

7 Guns n' Roses, "Sweet Child o' Mine" vs. 10 The B-52s, "Love Shack"

2 Bon Jovi, "Livin' On A Prayer" vs. 15 Public Enemy, "Fight the Power"
Livin on a Prayer should continue changing keys into infinity.
