Northeast Fall Novice Tournament - ONLINE (SCOP Novice 11 on 11/13/21)

Post by amundhe »

The New Jersey Quiz Bowl Alliance is proud to announce that it is co-hosting the Northeast Fall Novice Tournament (NFNT) on the SCOP Novice 11 set with Yash Mandavia and Aalok Bhattacharya. The tournament will take place on Saturday, November 13th, 2021 on Discord.

Tournament Directors:
Aum Mundhe, Joseph George, Yash Mandavia, and Aalok Bhattacharya will be directing this tournament.

Date: November 13th, 2021 at 09:00 EST

Set:
This tournament will be using SCOP Novice 11, a novice level set. It is meant for inexperienced players.

Rules:
We will use the ACF Rule Set with 20 tossup/bonus cycles, as well as noting 15 point powers because the questions are powermarked. Five seconds will be allotted for answering tossups, and eight seconds will be allotted for answering bonuses unless otherwise stated. As is standard, a maximum of 4 players will be allowed to play at a time, with 2 additional players allowed for substitutions. Substitutions will be allowed at halftime for each round.

Eligibility:
This tournament is for students from schools located in the New York Metropolitan Area (NJ-NY-PA-CT). We will NOT be allowing chimera or open teams at this tournament. Additionally, this is a novice tournament, so we have listed eligibility rules listed below:
  • You must not have scored over 50 PPG at any high school tournament
  • You must not have averaged over 2 powers per game over the course of any high school tournament
  • You must not have placed in the top 25 teams of MSNCT
  • You must not have been a member of an HSNCT playoff team or a team which finished in the top half of PACE
  • The TD team reserves discretion to remove players whom they do not deem novice.
With this being said, we do remind clubs to remember that this is a novice tournament when signing up; this tournament is for inexperienced novices and not for a team of good, experienced players who happen to fit these requirements.

Schedule:
We will start at 09:00 EST, but will require teams to join the Discord server earlier for introductory announcements and crucial information. Scheduling will be discussed in depth after registration. Each team will be guaranteed to play at least 10 rounds during the tournament.

Registration and Fees:
Registration will occur through this Google Form: https://forms.gle/dxMVWs5UXxe8myFB7

Fees:
$60 per team
-$30 discount for bringing a team-affiliated staffer (Maximum of 1 team-affiliated staffer per school)

We currently have a cap of 24 teams, but we may consider expanding if there are more teams. Because of the limited field size, we ask that each school only bring one additional team to this tournament. Schools may sign up a third team, but the third team will be placed on the waitlist and will only be allowed to participate if the field does not fill by the registration deadline. Furthermore, we will require that all teams submit rosters by November 6th, or one week before the tournament. Rosters will be limited to 6 competitors per team.

The registration deadline for this tournament is November 6th, 2021 at 11:59PM ET. We will email payment information to all teams after you register. Payment will also be due before the tournament, by 9:00 AM, November 13th.

Independent Staffers:
Staffers independent of a competing team will be given a stipend of $30 or community service hours. If you have any questions about staffing, please email [email protected]. To sign up to staff, please fill out this form:
https://forms.gle/cFzrT4y2KdKLTwa38

Results:
Statistics for the tournament will be posted within 48 hours of the completion of the tournament. This tournament will provide category statistics after the tournament.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing y’all at the Northeast Fall Novice Tournament. Have a nice day!

Two questions:
  1. By "2 powers per game," do you mean averaging no more than two powers in a tournament, or specifically never getting more than two powers in any game played?
  2. Would this be open to teams outside of the NYC metro area? I may have some players in Ithaca who would be interested in playing.

1. By "2 powers per game," I do mean an AVERAGE of two powers per game over the course of an entire tournament, not a specific game. Thanks so much for pointing this out; the original post has been corrected to reflect this wording.
2. We'd love to have Ithaca (and any other Northeastern team who isn't playing at the Hanover site) play here! Thanks so much for your interest!

At the present moment, the field has reached its initial cap of 24 teams.

We do still have four teams on the waitlist, and with multiple weeks before the tournament, I'd be shocked if the waitlist didn't grow. If you're available to staff on the day of the tournament, we'd love to have you! If we receive more staffers (around 4-5) more, we'd have enough to expand the field while making sure there are an adequate number of staffers in each room.

Just a reminder that the deadline for registration for this tournament is today (November 6), after which we will start letting C teams off the waitlist.

Additionally, the field has expanded again to 36 teams due to a large number of staff, so registering by the end of today will get you a spot in the field!
