Boilermaker Buzzathon VI at Purdue University (12/11/2021)

Post by quynh mccool »

The Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team is excited to announce the 6th annual Boilermaker Buzzathon: a regular-season quiz bowl tournament for high-school teams in the state of Indiana. This tournament will be held in-person on Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus on December 11th, 2021. The Tournament Director for this event will be Bailey Runyan. The field is capped at 16 teams, and will not be raised any further.

This tournament will use NAQT's IS-203A, a set meant to be challenging, but not overwhelming for players without much experience. Note that this is not the same question set as the IASP will use for their area championship. Teams consist of four players (more can rotate in and out as substitutions, maximum of 6 players on one team). Games will consist of two 10-tossup halves, with 3-part bonuses. There will be 15-point powers for early answers and 5-point negs for incorrect answers before the end of a tossup. There are no bouncebacks on bonuses.

Registration
To register for the Boilermaker Buzzathon, please use NAQT's registration system. Registration requires an account with NAQT. If you have any questions or need any assistance, email [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible. The finalized schedule will be sent out closer to the date, but a rough duration would be from 8:30 AM to sometime around 4 PM, with included lunch break. Registration closes on December 4th, 2021.

All members and staffers will be required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth during the tournament.

Eligibility
This tournament is primarily aimed toward Indiana high schools. High schools outside of Indiana can register, but they will be waitlisted, and will not formally be accepted until registration is closed. Waitlisted schools will be admitted in order of registration, and based on field size.

Schools may submit more than one team to this tournament. If you wish to submit multiple teams, please designate each team by decreasing strength with a letter, starting with A. For example, if Carmel High School were to submit 3 teams, we would expect their strongest team to be named Carmel A, the second-strongest to be Carmel B, and the third-strongest to be Carmel C.

Since this tournament happens after the end of most high schools' fall semesters, we understand if a team cannot be chaperoned to this event. Therefore, we do not require a coach or chaperone to be present for any team. However, we expect all teams to conduct themselves appropriately and reserve the right to kick players for disruptive behavior.

Fees and Discounts
  • Registration: $80 per team
  • -$5 from overall registration fees for each working buzzer set with at least 8 working buzzers.
  • -$5 per 100 miles traveled one-way. Distance decided via google maps.
Minimum fee of $50. We are not offering discounts for multiple teams or staffers because we anticipate this tournament being entirely house-run.

Payment
Payment must be made by cash, accepted the day of the tournament, or by a check made out to "Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team." We will send an invoice with instructions to each team that registers. Please contact us if this system does not work for you.

If the 6th Annual Boilermaker Buzzathon sounds of interest to you or your team, don’t hesitate to sign up. For any further questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest, and happy buzzing!

Hi all, an update for the Buzzathon.

We will be switching from NAQT's IS-207A to NAQT's IS-203A. This change was to accomodate for other tournaments being run in Indiana - the set is still not the same question set as the IASP will use for their area championship.

Feel free to contact [email protected] with any further questions.

Another update: we are raising the field cap to 14 teams, and we are not planning to raise it any further. As of now, we have 13 teams signed up, so make sure to register soon if you want to play.

A third update: we have secured enough rooms to raise the field to 16 teams, and registration will close this Saturday, December 4th. The initial post has been updated to reflect these two changes.
