Centennial Invitational IN-PERSON Sat March 5, 2022 NAQT 211A

Post by eseifte1 »

This is our first announcement for a live IN-PERSON tournament at CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held at 8:30 AM on Saturday, March 5, 2022. We will be using NAQT IS-211A set. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. These questions can also help to hone rapid buzzing skills for more experienced teams and players.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams. As in prior years (before COVID), we are planning to have a STANDARD field composed of teams of ANY AGE OR GRADE looking to have fun and NOT compete for a national tournament berth at HSNCT or PACE and a TOURNAMENT field composed of experienced teams looking for high-speed competition and national tournament qualifications. The STANDARD field will have its own trophies but standard teams will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously, teams can elect to participate in the TOURNAMENT field regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved. Very experienced Middle School and Elementary teams may participate, but they will be competing against high school teams; there will be no separate middle school division at the Centennial Invitational. For those who want a Middle/Elementary Tournament only, please see our post in the Middle School Forum for our tournament on the following week March 12 at nearby Burleigh Manor Middle School.

We will apply for Gold Certification from PACE, and we are using an NAQT set.
TRANSLATION: 20% of the TOTAL teams will be eligible from the varsity side for the PACE Nationals. The top 15% of the total number of teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT).

COVID RELATED ISSUES THAT AFFECT OUR TOURNAMENT (PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THESE ISSUES)
1. We strongly encourage everyone to be fully vaccinated, and ALL of our moderators, scorers, tournament staff (both students and adults) will be fully vaccinated. At this time, we cannot mandate full vaccination. But we are pursuing permission for this and might implement this rule closer to the date of the tournament. Remember, the National Tournaments are requiring full vaccination for participation. Of course, proper mask wearing will be strictly enforced and any deviation (under nose for example), will result in expulsion from the tournament after 1 warning. If you cannot abide by this mask policy, please don’t come.
2. THERE WILL BE NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE SCHOOL (except for a water bottle). This means we will not be providing our traditional breakfast, snacks, pizzas, or food. You will need to bring your own and picnic outside or in your cars or go to local eateries. If you cannot abide by this eating policy, please don’t come.
3. We will not have an introductory meeting in the cafeteria. You will be provided with a schedule on arrival with your room numbers and you will go directly to your rooms. The cafeteria will be available for sitting/studying, but you will need to socially distance and no eating is allowed. Again, don’t come if this sounds abhorrent.
4. There will be no Coach’s Round this year since we really cannot congregate to watch it.

Registration will begin at 8 am and you will be given a schedule at check-in.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $75 for every team. No discounts are being offered. DO NOT MAIL REGISTRATION CHECKS (bring them with you)!!!! CHECKS FOR REGISTRATION SHOULD BE MADE OUT TO "CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL." You can use cash as an alternative. We cannot use VENMO.
REGISTRATION:
PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PRIOR NAQT ACCOUNT, YOU WILL NEED TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT THROUGH THIS LINK (JUST SCROLL DOWN WHEN YOU ARE PROMPTED FOR YOUR PASSWORD).
REGISTRATION for the Centennial Invitational High School can be completed at this site:
https://www.naqt.com/go/register/12417
We are capping registration at 36 teams (less ambitious than prior years due to the COVID situation).
We are very excited to offer this in-person Quizbowl opportunity!

For questions (not registration), e-mail [email protected]. Feel free to share this announcement with other teams that might be interested in attending.

Thank you to our 36 teams for returning to a in-person tournament, our first hosting such a tournament in 2 1/2 years!
We had 2 divisions:
In the Tournament Division: RM A came in 1st place overcoming a 130 point deficit with 3 questions left in the second game of an advantaged final, winning by 5 points against Blair A, who came in 2nd place. TJ C came in 3rd place, defeating Blair B, who came in 4th place.
In the Standard Division, Longfellow Middle went undefeated, defeating Marriotts Ridge A in the final, who came in 2nd. Blair D defeated Blair E for 3rd and 4th place respectively.
We hope you all had a good time being together in person again.
