Piasa Bird Invitational VI @ Southwestern H.S. (Piasa, IL) - 2/12/2022 (Reschedule)

Post by mhasquin »

Southwestern High School (Piasa, Illinois) will be hosting the Piasa Bird Invitational VI (PBI VI) on January 15, 2022 on February 12, 2022.

Each round will consist of 20 tossup questions with 20 3-part bonuses. The tournament will use 15-point "powers" (reward for an early enough buzz), and "negs", a 5-point penalty for preemptive, incorrect buzzes. Bonuses will not rebound.

We're currently looking for a field of 18 teams. Expansion to 24 is possible if there is interest and staff available.

The field has been expanded to 24 and that will remain as the cap.

Teams can contact me to be waitlisted

Fees
  • Fees are $70 for the first team and $60 for each subsequent team.
  • Make checks payable to Southwestern CUSD #9, and you may pay through mail (Southwestern High School, 8226 RT. 111, Piasa, IL 62079) or on-site when you check-in at the tournament.
Question Set
We will be mirroring Scottie 2021.

A concession stand will not be available for lunch. We recommend that teams bring a lunch.

Please register through this link: PBI VI Registration Form

Rules:
Rounds are 20/20 with one tiebreaker tossup if needed.
We will use powers (15) and negs (-5). Five players are allowed per team.
We will not use bouncebacks, and substitutes are allowed after each game only (rules are subject to change based on future field size).
Timing will be 5 seconds after the question to buzz, 5 seconds to give your answer once you buzz, and 5 seconds to confer and answer on bonuses.

If you have questions, please email Matt Hasquin at [email protected]

It seems that the PBI has a shadow that looms over it every year. Weather has always been a challenge and the combination of poor weather and pandemic concerns caused another postponement and reschedule this year. Thankfully we were able to complete the tournament on a new date and the PBI VI is in the books.

Marshall Mullins did a fantastic job, as always, as tournament director. A successful scholastic bowl event depends on great readers and we had them today. Thanks to Kimberly French, Jacob Simmons, Brad Tutterow, Brian Tutterow, Abby Mueller, Grace Starrett, Alicia Woodman, Shelby Oertel, Emily Simpson, and Jacob O'Rourke. Round nine ended around 3:30 and we were able to finish the first game of an advantaged final a little after 4:00.

Also, a big thanks to the writers of the Scottie 2021 set. We appreciate that we have the chance to host a mirror on a great set of questions.

Congratulations to the top four finishers: 1. Southwestern A, 2. Springfield A, 3. Granite City A, 4. Macomb A

All Tournament Team Members: 1. Corbin Tutterow, Southwestern A; 2. Jack Casey, Springfield A; 3. Henry Jones, Macomb A; 4. Lily Relleke, Granite City A; 5. Tucker Gehrig, Alton; 6. Eli Hill, Alton; 7. Christian Alexandre, Quincy A; Alex Matthews, Warrensburg-Latham A; Spencer Hoehl, Litchfield; Ethan Baima, Springfield A; Jadon Wing, Granite City A; Nate Pasman, Springfield B.
