SHOW-ME Available for Mirrors (2022-23, HS Regular)

Post by eygotem »

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that the State Housewrite Of Wondrous Missouri Excellence, or SHOW-ME (originally announced as SMART) will be available for mirrors starting September 1, 2022. Our questions are targeted at high school regular difficulty, and should be comparable to NAQT IS sets as well as past editions of RAFT and CALISTO. Our head editor is Ganon Evans, and I (Eric Yin) am directing communications.

Our subject editing team, consisting of experienced players and alumni mostly from the state of Missouri, is as follows:

Literature- Joel Miles (U of Minnesota), Gabe Forrest (College Heights Christian)
History- Louis Li (Brown), Ganon Evans (U of Iowa)
Science & Math- Eric Yin (WUSTL), Joy An (Choate), Jason Xu (Missouri S&T)
Fine Arts- Gabe Forrest, Joel Miles, Ganon Evans
Belief & Thought- Ganon Evans, Emmaleigh Coe (Truman State), Joel Miles
Modern World & Other- Ganon Evans, Connor Lee (Eldon), Felix Wang (Mizzou)

Our questions are written by the editors above, along with a team of writers selected from the open application process detailed here.

SHOW-ME will have 14 packets of uniform difficulty, each containing 20 power-marked tossups and 20 three-part bonuses, as well as an extra half-packet of replacement questions. Tossups are between 550 to 650 characters in length, while bonuses are capped at 8 lines of text. Our subject distribution is as follows:

4 History (1.25 American, 1.25 European, 1.25 World, 0.25 Mixed/Other)
4 Literature (1.5 Long Fiction, 0.75 Poetry, 0.5 Drama, 1.25 Mixed/Other)
4 Science & Math (1 Biology, 0.75 Chemistry, 0.75 Physics, 0.5 Math, 0.33 Astro, 0.33 Earth, 0.33 Computer)
3 Fine Arts (1 Visual, 1 Auditory, 1 Other Fine Arts)
2.5 Belief & Thought (1.5 Belief (Religion & Myth), 0.5 Philosophy, 0.5 Social Science)
2.5 Modern World & Other (0.75 Geography, 0.5 Current Events, 0.5 Pop Culture & Sports, 0.75 Other)

The mirror fee to use the SHOW-ME set will be $20 per non-house team, though a $5 per team discount will be applied if the host sends us conversion statistics (such as those generated by TJ Sheets). We hope to have mirrors in every U.S. region and possibly internationally. If you would like to use our set and/or have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

Our first tournament with this set was today! A lot of blood, sweat, and "for 10 points" went into making it, so we hope to have as many sites as possible! Reach out to Eric if you are interested!

We host a league in Illinois with a difficulty in finding quality questions. We were wondering if we could set up a mirror as a league and hold questions secure between weeks. We run a 20 team league so that could work out well if available. Please contact me and maybe we can find a way.
