The most common schools from the last three NAQT Entering Freshmen Lists

Post by AKKOLADE »

I took the last three NAQT Entering Freshmen (so the classes of 2019-2021) and determined which schools have the most listed players who provided their information. This is a total of 3046 entries.

Class of 2021: 811 total entries
Class of 2020: 1032 total entries
Class of 2019: 1226 total entries

If you're perceptive, you may notice that actually adds up to 3069 entries. The discrepancy is because of 23 entries that listed multiple schools.

There are 604 unique schools listed. Here are all of the ones with 10 or more entries.

From what I can tell, of the top 27 schools (thanks, ties), 5 don't have teams or only minimally active teams as of 2021-22:

Buffalo
SUNY-Binghamton (although I know they're getting a team together)
Oklahoma State (played 2021 ACF Fall)
SUNY-Geneseo (played 2020 ACF Winter)
Monroe CC

I would slightly discount some of the NY schools because there's an overrepresentation of responses from Masterminds players, which is based in Upstate NY and is generally a less-active/involved HS circuit compared to many other areas. But it's still a good potential player base that could definitely be developed on a regional basis as well.

There are also many schools that would likely have a solid HS player base to draw from if you look beyond pyramidal experience as well that are not listed since it seems most of these entries come from HSNCT attendees. Arkansas likely has dozens, if not hundreds, of former HS players beyond the ones listed and seems to have formed a student club, but they have not to my knowledge registered for or attended any events. I'm sure that Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, Colorado State, and Washington State have many non-pyramidal former HS players as well.

The issue is: can these former HS players be contacted? If so, who will do this? Can they be convinced to start a club? Will there be accessible events for them to play against comparable competition on difficulty-appropriate sets? Will the student leadership be motivated to put effort into maintaining the club or will it go away after one player graduates?

IDing potential college players is a great first step, but that may be the easiest part.

Looking back on this: Buffalo, Binghamton, Oklahoma State, and SUNY-Geneseo all played college events in 2022-23! Great job by everyone who worked to get these programs rolling.
