Announcement: Canadian Novice (March 2023)

Post by benchapman »

I am excited to announce Canadian Novice, a novice-level collegiate quizbowl tournament available in March 2023. We are targeting the difficulty of past "spring novice" sets, such as Spring Novice and Boilermaker Spring Novice. Canadian Novice will be edited by Dennis Beeby (formerly of Queen’s and Ottawa), Cormac Beirne (McGill), Benjamin Chapman (Toronto), Raymond Chen (Toronto), Ian Chow (Toronto), Ian Dewan (Kiel, formerly of Carleton), Aaron Dos Remedios (formerly of Waterloo), Max Gedajlovic (British Columbia), Sky Li (Toronto), Adrian Wong (McMaster), and Wenying Wu (Toronto). The writing team consists of the editors and other members of the Canadian circuit. Cormac Beirne and Sky Li are co-head editors and I, Benjamin Chapman, am handling set logistics.

The subject editors will be:
Literature: Wenying Wu (American), Raymond Chen (Commonwealth), Max Gedajlovic (European and World)
History: Dennis Beeby, Adrian Wong
Science: Raymond Chen (Biology), Benjamin Chapman (Chemistry, Physics, Other Science), Sky Li (Computer Science)
Fine Arts: Cormac Beirne (Visual), Sky Li (Auditory), Benjamin Chapman (Jazz)
Belief: Cormac Beirne (Religion), Sky Li (Mythology)
Thought: Ian Dewan (Philosophy), Dennis Beeby (Economics, Law, Political Science), Raymond Chen (Psychology), Cormac Beirne (Other Social Science)
Popular Culture and Film: Aaron Dos Remedios
Other: Ian Chow

Eligibility
As this is an introductory-level tournament targeted at less-experienced players, players who meet any of the following criteria are ineligible to play:
  • You have ever scored more than 60 points per game at a quizbowl tournament (excluding middle school tournaments).
  • You have made the playoffs at HSNCT or top 32 at NSC.
  • You have played ICT (DI or DII) or ACF Nationals.
If you meet one or more of these criteria but believe you still fit the intended audience of this tournament, please email [email protected] (CCing your local TD) to request an eligibility exemption.

Hosting
The set will be available for mirrors beginning on March 4, 2023 (note that this is the same day as the IQBT Undergraduate Championship). The mirror fee will be $35 USD per team (including house teams) for non-"new to quizbowl" teams. New to quizbowl teams (defined as not having played any tournaments in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons) will have a mirror fee of $10 USD. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in hosting a mirror.

We are also allowing high-school-only mirrors of Canadian Novice; please just note this in your email. The eligibility restrictions do not apply to high-school-only mirrors.

Question Set
We will be producing 12 paсks (plus tiebreakers) of 24 powermarked tossups and 24 bonuses. Tossups will be between 5-6 lines in 10pt Times New Roman font before powermarking. Each bonus will be a maximum of 8 lines long.

We will be writing slightly more than 12 paсks plus tiebreakers worth of questions to both allow us to include a higher-than-typical percentage of questions on Canadian topics for the Canadian mirror and have a more typical geographic distribution of content for non-Canadian mirrors (i.e. we will Americanize the set for mirrors). The Americanized version will have minor changes to the distribution below to reflect the reduced Canadian content.

Our non-Americanized distribution will be as follows, distributed over 24/24:
  • 4/4 Literature
    • 1.1/1.1 American Literature
    • 1.25/1.25 Commonwealth Literature
    • .9/.9 European Literature
    • .75/.75 World Literature
  • 4/4 History
    • 1/1 American History
    • 1/1 European History
    • 1/1 World History
    • 1/1 Ancient and Other History
  • 4/4 Science
    • 1/1 Biology
    • 1/1 Chemistry

  • 3/3 Fine Arts
    • 1/1 Painting and Sculpture

We are still looking for mirrors in many regions of the US; if you're from one of the regions that doesn't have a mirror listed above and are interested in hosting, shoot me an email at [email protected].

Since a couple regions weren't able to host Canadian Novice mirrors this spring, we will be keeping the set available for this fall. If you're from a region that didn't previously host a mirror and are interested in hosting, email me at [email protected].
