Middlebrook Scrim Tournament (MBST) - Online 3/25/22

Post by cocibolcarcadian »

Hi folks!

Middlebrook Quiz Bowl Club is excited to announce that it will be hosting a set of practice scrims on Friday, March 25, 2022 for middle school teams wishing to prepare for IPNCT or MSNCT. This scrim will take place online using buzzin.live and discord, and the field will have no geographic restrictions.

To help challenge MSNCT attendees, we’re going to be using questions from COAST, an HS Regs+ housewrite written and edited by me, Jacob Hardin-Bernhardt, Danny Peelen, and others, and supervised by Cerulean Ozarow. A link to this set’s distro and writers can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/22pxb5zx.

We have a hard field cap of 24 teams for this scrim. Sign up fast!

Format
In order to get through as many rounds of nationals questions as possible in the span of one afternoon, this scrim is tossup-only.

The scrim will begin at 5:30 PM Eastern Time (2:30 Pacific). It will consist of three preliminary rounds followed by three single-elimination playoff matches, for a total of six rounds played. Teams who are eliminated are still able to play in consolation for various rankings and for extra practice. The scrim is expected to end around 9:00 PM Eastern Time (6:00 Pacific) or so, perhaps a bit earlier. Stats will be posted live on hsquizbowl, and category stats will be provided by Tuesday at the latest.

Payment and Registration
Since this is a scrim and not an official tournament, there is no payment required to sign up and play. You and your players, however, need a Discord account and a platform with which you can access buzzin.live.

Fill out this form to register a team for the scrimmage: https://tinyurl.com/5afkdznv
Fill out this form to register staffers: https://tinyurl.com/58axyh9y

We will send a confirmation email once you sign up using the forms above. The last day to drop teams is Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

Eligibility
This scrimmage is open only to middle school students. While this is oriented towards teams preparing for nationals, any middle school team is eligible to take part.

Rules
Middlebrook Quiz Bowl does not condone harassment, intimidation, or bullying of any kind. Players will be removed from the scrimmage at the scrimmage director’s discretion, and their and their team’s results will be disqualified.

Since this is an online scrimmage, we will be enforcing the two-hand rule; that is, players must show both of their hands while buzzing. This can be done in multiple ways, including tilting your phone screen towards the camera or raising your mouse in the view of the camera. If a player or team is caught not following these rules, gameplay will be stopped and the players will be reminded to obey the rules. Successive violations of this rule will result in an ejection from the scrimmage.

Important Updates:
Due to time restraint concerns, MBST will run on five rounds of COAST and not six as previously stated. Furthermore, the field cap has been reduced to 12 teams. We will create a waitlist for any additional teams over this cap.

Lastly, to accommodate schools on the west coast, the first round will be an optional (but still highly encouraged) warm-up round to get accustomed to the question difficulty.
