Vanderbilt SPOOKY VI (10/29)

Post by The Yuster »

Vanderbilt Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce this year’s Scholastic Performance Of Outstandingly Knowledgeable Youths VI (SPOOKY VI), formerly known as ABC Fall. This will be an in-person high school tournament to be held on October 29th, 2022 at Buttrick Hall on the Vanderbilt University campus. Vanderbilt Quiz Bowl president Justin Yu will serve as tournament director. Check-in on the day of the tournament will begin at 7:30 AM and end at 8:40 AM. There will be a player and coach’s meeting at 8:40 AM. The first round will begin promptly at 9 AM CST, and the tournament should finish by 5 PM CST.

Questions:
This tournament will be run using IS-213, a high school regular level set by NAQT.

Format:
We will be using untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups with three-part bonuses. Besides timing, we will use standard NAQT gameplay rules (https://www.naqt.com/rules/). There will be powers and negs, and no bouncebacks on bonuses. Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets and playoff brackets will be determined based on preliminary record. All teams will be offered a minimum of 8 games, and statistics will be kept in full.

Fees and Discounts:
The base fee is $75 for the first team sent by a school and $70 for any subsequent teams sent by a school.
Moderators: $15 discount for teams that provide an experienced moderator for the tournament.
Buzzers: $5 discount per buzzer with no limit on buzzers (until we reach around 10 buzzers)
Travel Discount: $5 discount for every 100 miles traveled one-way according to Google Maps.
The minimum fee is $45.

Registration:
This tournament is open to any HS teams. Teams can register for this tournament by sending an email to [email protected]. Teams that register will also be provided and required to fill out a form that affirms compliance with Vanderbilt's Protection of Minors policy. When registering, please let us know how many teams, buzzers, and moderators you expect to bring. Each school is initially allowed to register with two teams at most with any additional teams being placed on a waitlist. The field cap is tentatively set at 20 teams, though we will consider expanding the field if there is enough interest. The last day to register for this tournament will be October 12, 2022. Furthermore, the filled out form for Vanderbilt's Protections of Minors policy is required by October 14, 2022. Failure to send in the form by that date will potentially prevent the registration of your team.

Location:
The tournament will take place in Buttrick Hall, 2400 Vanderbilt Pl, Nashville, TN 37212, approachable easily from I-440's exit 1A onto West End heading north, or I-40's exit 209B on Broadway heading South towards the Medical Center, or just from Charlotte Ave. to West End heading towards the west side of campus near the roundabout near Kirkland Hall.

Parking:
Parking is limited. There is no parking at Buttrick Hall, but you can drive up to it for drop-off via West Side Row off 24th Ave S, which will put you behind Sarratt Student Center with a 2 minute walk to Buttrick Hall.
Please refer to the campus parking map (https://www.vanderbilt.edu/traffic_park ... ng_Map.pdf) and the Medical Center parking map (https://prd-medweb-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com ... %20Map.pdf) to find parking.

Payment:
Schools may pay using cash, personal checks, funds from an organization, or school checks. We prefer payment the day of, but checks can be sent ahead of time (contact us for more information). All teams must pay by October 29, 2022, or pay a $25 late fee. Purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or other forms of payment are not acceptable and will be subject to the late fee. All checks must be made out to "Vanderbilt Quiz Bowl". If you need a pre-tournament invoice or W-9 form in order to have a check written, you must let us know by October 12th so that we can send you the paperwork in time.

Team Size:
Teams must consist of players from the same school. Teams will consist of up to four active players and up to two substitutes for a total of six players per team. Players may not transfer between teams.

Prizes:
We will award trophies for the top three teams and book prizes to the top five individual scorers.

Contact:
Any questions about the tournament can be directed to [email protected].

Current Field:
The field will be updated here as teams register.
