MMMM (MSQB Madness II, 10/9, Online)

Post by powerneg »

Hello! Andrew Gao (Chenery) and I, Neev Sahgal (Darien) are running the MSQB Madness Middle-and-High-School Mirror (MMMM), on October 9th. Cindy Gao (Belmont) will help co-TD both divisions.

We will have two divisions, one for closed middle school teams, and one for all high school teams, open or closed. We will have no geographical restrictions—this mirror is intended to give everyone a last chance to play MSQB Madness II.

Set
This tournament will be run on MSQB Madness II, a set composed of 7 tossup-only packets of high school regular difficulty, and 1 high school regs+ packet. We will only be using the regs+ packet for placement games/finals.

Platform
We will be using Discord and buzzin.live for this tournament. Please make sure you are familiar with both of those websites before the tournament.

Misconduct and Integrity Policy
Players must have 2 hands visible on camera at all times. Camera exemptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis. Misconduct and cheating specifically is expressly forbidden and will be investigated and/or reported to quizbowl organizations if necessary.

Date & Time
This tournament will take place on October 9th, a Sunday. The tournament will start at 10:00 AM EDT, and we expect it to finish by 3:30 PM EDT. There will also be a 45-minute long lunch break.

Rules
We will be using NAQT Rules, but there will be two modifications. We will be using 5/5 timing, and there will be 20 tossups and sudden-death overtime, so all rules about bonuses and receiving bonuses after answering a tossup correctly should be disregarded.

Format
We will do our best to ensure all teams get at least 7 games on the 7 regs packets. Finals and placement games will occur if necessary on the regs+ packet.

We expect to have a middle school champion, a high school closed champion, and a high school open champion, though the latter 2 may be consolidated into an overall high school champion should we have less than 8 teams total in the high school division.

To be clear, we will not have “high school open” or “high school closed” divisions—all high school teams will play in the same division, but the top 2 teams open/closed teams will play at the end for the title.

Fees
The tournament fee structure will be as follows:

$60 per team
$30 flat fee per team for teams entirely consisting of members who have not played pyramidal quizbowl since August 1st, 2020
-$20 shorthanded discount per team (1-2 players)
$0 minimum total fee

Staff
Staff will be paid $15 for staffing 8 rounds of tossup-only packets -- we expect this to take no more than 5.5 hours (including lunch). Staff may also elect to give the team they’re affiliated with a $15 discount.

Staff may register here: https://forms.gle/hv53pUysx5RTicSu8

Team Registration
Teams for the middle school division should register here: https://forms.gle/UGd1aoySPsHfa7PM9

Teams for the high school division should register here: https://forms.gle/do356o1Wu6aE1CEw9

Once you receive a confirmation email and an invoice from Andrew or I, your team is officially registered.

Registration will close on October 4th at 11:59 PM EDT. After this date, all teams who drop will incur a $50 penalty unless there are extreme circumstances.

Our field will be capped at 16 teams, and can be found here.

Stats
We will have live stats up to the game for this event. Official team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.com within 24 hours of the end of the tournament. We will also have category and subcategory stats.

Contact
My email is [email protected]. Andrew’s email is [email protected], and Cindy’s is [email protected]. Please contact us if you have any questions!

We hope to see you at MMMM!

MMMM happened today! Stats are available here, and category stats are here.

Middlesex won with an undefeated, 8-0 record! They beat Finan Homeschool 130-30 in the finals.

Our top three scorers today were Ryca Finan (5), Aiden Younessian (8), and Anika Bansal (7) in that order.

My staff, Chris Yoo, Padraig Finan, Sophia Guo, and Sivaneyan Vivekanandhan were instrumental in making this tournament run! Neev Sahgal was a great co-TD for this event, and he also helped staff.

I hope to see some of the teams who played today in-person—in the meantime, thank you for playing and have a great weekend!
