Belmont HS intends to claim October 29th for a tournament with two divisions, one on KICKOFF and one on KICKOFF novice. This tournament is not replacing BAIT V which we will likely host at some point in March or April.

Glad somebody is taking this over. Troy mentioned to me that Plymouth in NH is hosting a tournament on October 15th on IS-211A so that should be added. I'll probably have the rest of the MEQBA dates further in the year.

Already updated on the schedule but want to repost, due to potential scheduling conflicts that would reduce our staff capacity the preliminary date for Belmont Fall Tournament is being moved to September 24th.

Thank you, Sam, for picking this up. Plymouth is indeed looking to host PAQT5 on October 15. I have been away most of the summer in Ecuador and am just getting back into the swing here, and I plan to start getting the forum post and everything officially nailed down for this in the next week or so.

Cindy Gao and I are planning on hosting a mirror of KICKOFF and KICKOFF Novice—the KICKOFF Northeast Middle School Mirror, on October 1st. We will have two divisions with a combined field cap of 16 teams.

EDIT: We have changed the date to October 8th.

As we are now a week away with seven teams, we do expect an 8th team who hasn't registered yet. If you plan to register, please do so by early next week at NAQT.com so we can finish the logistics. We expect to run it even with just seven if it stays as such, but we would love to see more of you here!

Congrats to Hanover for running the table and winning this event. Brookline finished a strong second at 8-1. Thanks to all who helped make this a successful event this year.

Hi All,
It seems like Quiz Bowl in New England is suffering from a long sleep. I'm not sure if AMSA is able to staff a tournament this year - I can barely staff a team of 4 kids. I'm happy to work with another school possibly? Space is easy for me to arrange and my school is good about not charging me anything.

One of the GBH staffers reached out to me. She said they are slow on registrations for HSQS and asked if I would post a reminder. This even has always been a helpful way to raise the profile of quiz bowl in the area - maybe some new teams are ready to emerge from this event. If you haven't already, you can still register. https://www.wgbh.org/quiz-show/register I actually registered with "Place Holder" as several of my players and they were ok with that for now. The Super Sunday event is Nov. 6th.

As always, if any coaches or captains need advice or have questions, I'm happy to serve as a resource. I feel like we worked so hard to get this circuit healthy and competitive and it hurts my heart a little to see so little activity. Where is Harvard, MIT, Northeastern?

On a note not really related to the above post, Belmont High School is likely going to be running BAIT V on April 1st, the date is still subject to change and the set is TBD, however we thought it was worth getting it on the calendar now at least.

I agree 100 percent with Coach Bowen. The issue becomes cyclical. Teams have declined since COVID-19, understandably, as the online thing had appeal to some, but not to the masses. One of the truly powerful aspects of a healthy circuit is the comradery developed between players, teams and coaches by seeing each other typically monthly at some events, and really becoming a big New England quiz bowl family. When the online thing came to be, it opened up the possibility of playing teams from all over the country, but it lost the personal touch that so many of us loved. As fewer teams play, fewer events happen, and thus the opportunity for students to discover just how great in-person quiz bowl is becomes much more limited. It feels like QB in New England is back to where it started, with a few teams in isolated circuits competing, but the big events and plethora of teams has dwindled. I hope that piece by piece that comes back together over this year and next. I'm hoping that the events like Harvard Fall and MIT in-person return to what they once were, and that we see some other schools pop up with events, as they can be a great way to make money quickly for Nationals. Plymouth may be hosting WHIP3 this winter, once Granite State Challenge concludes. Other teams that want to host events though, we would be happy to help with any logistics, and I would expect other former in-person TDs like Coach Bowen and Nic Pruitt who is doing a phenomenal job getting the Maine circuit up and running can be great resources as well. The more teams that get going, the healthier the circuit will become.

Upon some further discussion Belmont High School has decided we will be hosting an additional tournament on February 4th, tentatively named Belmont Winter Tournament, set for it and BAIT V both remain TBD.

This has not yet been finalized; as excited as we are about it, Nick jumped the gun a little here. We're still finalizing everything with AMSA and NAQT. However, it would be good for teams to pencil in this date. We do expect to move forward on this.
