KICKOFF Northeast Mirror (10/8, Online)

Post by komododragon655 »

(Crossposted from the Middle School subforum. This tournament was initially open to just middle schools, but has since opened up to high school teams.)

I am excited to announce a tournament, the KICKOFF Northeast Mirror, on KICKOFF and KICKOFF Novice! We will have two divisions—one running KICKOFF and the other running KICKOFF Novice. There will be a combined field cap of 16.

KICKOFF Novice is adapted from KICKOFF, and shares a lot of the same answerlines. As such, teams who have played one of the sets (KICKOFF/KICKOFF Novice) may NOT play the other set.

This tournament will be held on Saturday, October 8th, 2022, and will be directed by Andrew Gao (Chenery) and Jason Qin (IMSA).

This tournament is intended to function as an online mirror with geographical restrictions. Only teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire will be immediately accepted into the field. Teams outside these states may request an exception to play the mirror by emailing me at [email protected] before registration.

Rules
Teams will consist of no more than 6 players, with only 4 players playing at a given time. All players are required to follow NAQT gameplay rules (with timing + other small modifications) and active players must show TWO HANDS on camera during games if they do not have an exemption from a tournament director. Cheating is expressly forbidden and any suspicions of cheating will be investigated and reported to quizbowl organizations if necessary.

Format
This tournament will have two divisions, Standard and Novice. Standard will run KICKOFF, and Novice will run KICKOFF Novice. There will be a combined field cap at 16 teams. Teams will be guaranteed 8 games. We will use 20 tossups and 20 three-part-bonuses per untimed round. We will use both 15-point powers and negative-5-point negs. There will be no computational math.

Unless enough staffers have Zoom premium or a school Zoom, games will be played on Discord, with Buzzin.live for buzzing. A change in format will be announced to all teams, but expect Discord for now. Each individual player must have their own Discord account to join the tournament server. Making an account is free and can be done so here.

Registration
Please register teams using this form. Outside staffers will be paid $25 for staffing the whole tournament and may sign up here. Staffers will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis until we have enough staff.

Fees
Base Fee: $70 per team
Shorthanded (1-2 players) discount: -$30
Staff Discount: -$25
There will be a minimum fee of $0 per school. Teams who cancel without a legitimate reason after October 4th at 11:59 PM EDT must pay the full fee.

Payment should be made out through Venmo, Paypal, or by check (with Venmo strongly preferred). If your school needs a W-9 or additional info to pay, please let us know via email before registration. We will send specific payment info prior to the tournament.

Stats
Team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.com within 24 hours of the end of the tournament. We will have live stats up to the game on a Google Sheet, and category and subcategory stats.

Misconduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported to this form and/or sent to [email protected].

Contact
Please direct any questions to [email protected]. We hope to see your team here!

Registration for this closes in 2 days, and if we do not have more than 4 teams in the novice division by then, we will have to merge divisions (running just standard on KICKOFF). Additionally, we are seeking platinum certification by PACE, meaning the top 25% of teams in our field (rounded up) qualify for PACE NSC.

Due to low interest in the Novice division, we will combine divisions into just the Standard division (running regular KICKOFF). Tomorrow is the last day to register—please do not be afraid to ask me for an exemption if your team is interested!

This tournament ran smoothly! Stats can be found here, and category stats are here.

First, we would like to congratulate Choate Moose (CT) for winning the tournament outright with a perfect 10-0 record! Choate Goose (CT) finished in second after beating Olympian (CA) in a de facto 2nd-place game 360-185.

Joy An, of Choate Moose, was today's top scorer, with an impressive 126.67 PPG across all games. Saketh Dontaraju, Sanjeev Ganesh, Martin Costa, and Vincent You, rounded out the top five scorers!

This tournament would not have been possible without our amazing staff: Amal Balachundhar, Mike Laudermith, Sophia Guo, and Vikram Narasimhan. Jason Qin co-TD'd this mirror, helped staff, and was overall very helpful!

We would like to wish everyone a nice weekend and good luck in the season!
