The Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team is excited to announce the 7th annual Boilermaker Buzzathon: a regular-season quiz bowl tournament for high-school teams in the state of Indiana. This tournament will be held in-person on Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus on January 14, 2023. The Tournament Director for this event will be me, Bailey Runyan.

This tournament will use NAQT's IS-216A, a set meant to be challenging, but not overwhelming for players without much experience. Note that this is not the same question set as the IASP will use for their area championship. Teams consist of four players (more can rotate in and out as substitutions, maximum of 6 players on one team). Games will consist of two 10-tossup halves, with 3-part bonuses. There will be 15-point powers for early answers and 5-point negs for incorrect answers before the end of a tossup. There are no bouncebacks on bonuses.

Registration
To register for the Boilermaker Buzzathon, please use NAQT's registration system. Registration requires an account with NAQT. If you have any questions or need any assistance, email [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible. The finalized schedule will be sent out closer to the date, but a rough duration would be from 8:30 AM to sometime around 4 PM, with included lunch break. Registration closes on January 11, 2023.

NAQT Website Listing: https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=14178

All members and staffers will be required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth during the tournament.
EDIT: Masks will not be required for participation or attendance at this tournament, though they are encouraged.

Eligibility
This tournament is primarily aimed toward Indiana high schools. High schools outside of Indiana can register, but they will be waitlisted, and will not formally be accepted until registration is closed. Waitlisted schools will be admitted in order of registration, and based on field size.

Schools may submit more than one team to this tournament. If you wish to submit multiple teams, please designate each team by decreasing strength with a letter, starting with A. For example, if Lafayette High School were to submit 3 teams, we would expect their strongest team to be named Lafayette A, the second-strongest to be Lafayette B, and the third-strongest to be Lafayette C.

Fees and Discounts
Registration: $80 per team
-$5 from overall registration fees for each working buzzer set with at least 8 working buzzers.
-$5 per 100 miles traveled one-way. Distance decided via Google Maps.
Minimum fee of $50. We are not offering discounts for multiple teams or staffers because we anticipate this tournament being entirely house-run.

Payment
Payment must be made by cash, accepted the day of the tournament, or by a check made out to "Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team." We will send an invoice with instructions to each team that registers. Please contact us if this system does not work for you.

If the 7th Annual Boilermaker Buzzathon sounds of interest to you or your team, don’t hesitate to sign up. For any further questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest, and happy buzzing!

UPDATE 12/12/2022 Re: Boilermaker Buzzathon VII at Purdue University (01/14/2023)

Post by brunyan »

Hi all, and thank you so much for your interest in Purdue's Boilermaker Buzzathon VII!

Due to overwhelming interest - we have an announcement: the field cap has been raised to 24 teams to match demand.

This comes with its own changes - the tournament will now be held at the Recitation Building (REC), at 656 Oval Dr, West Lafayette, IN 47907, instead of LILY. This building is about a 10 minute walk away from LILY and will thus not change much about parking or logistics. Timing will remain the same.
(The opening and closing meeting will be held in Class of 1950 Lecture Hall's large Room 224 (CL50 224), at 648 Oval Dr, West Lafayette, IN 47907. This building is a 1-2 min walk away from REC.)

The increased field cap has also opened up a need for team-provided staffers! If a team can provide a reader able to read rounds of 20 tossups/bonuses in 45-55 minutes, they will be given a $10 discount to their registration fee - the minimum registration fee is still $50.

This discount is listed on the NAQT registration page, and can be applied by any new teams registering, or updated.
If a team has already registered and can provide a staffer, please contact [email protected] and I can apply the discount manually.

Thank you all for your time, and excited to have an awesome Buzzathon in January!
