Geography Circuit GeoBee

Post by jtachicago »

Hello Everyone,

We are excited to host the first Geography Circuit GeoBee! This single-subject event will be conducted over Zoom on Saturday December 10 at 10 AM PST and will last for around 2.5 hours. There will be two divisions, a middle school division intended for grades 6-8 and a high school division for grades 9-12. It is a global, multi-school competition, so there are no location restrictions. The questions and tournament format will be structured like the National Geographic GeoBee.

The form to enter this competition is linked here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected] to receive further information.

Is there a registration fee? Could you provide a brief description of game and tournament format for anyone who's not familiar with the no-longer operating NatGeo Geography Bee?

No, there is no registration fee. The tournament is completely free to enter.

The preliminary rounds will be given orally and will be held on Zoom, and there will be at least 2 of these rounds for a contestant to participate in. Questions will generally be either reasoning-based, and require a written response from the contestant, or fact-based, and will require an answer that will generally, but not always, revolve around a location's geographical name. Contestants will be awarded points for correct answers and will lose no points for incorrect answers. After the conclusion of the preliminaries, the top 10 individual contestants across the competition pool will participate in the finals. The formatting of the finals will be kept secret until the day of the competition. However, students can expect questions and point systems similar to the preliminaries but testing a broader, deeper range of geographic knowledge. Students should also know that there will be checkpoints where students with the lowest scores will be eliminated from the competition during the finals.

Congratulations to all of those who participated in this competition and helped make it possible! It was great seeing a diverse collection of people from seven different states.

Special thanks goes to the following winners of this competition:

Winner: Srinidhaya Vempati from New Jersey
2nd Place: Asa from Massachusetts
3rd Place: Joe from California

In addition, I cannot give enough thanks to the following people who help run this competition alongside me:
Ahilan Eraniyan, who organized and moderated this competition;
Arin Parsa, who helped write questions
Anders Daly, who also helped write questions

We hope to see everyone once again for future installments of this geography competition coming sometime in 2023!
