VALORANT @ Canyon Crest Academy (3/18/2023)

Post by Yaj »

CCA Quizbowl is pleased to announce the Very Acclaimed Liturgy of Rambunctious Academia Novice Tournament (VALORANT), a middle school tournament! This tournament will be directed by myself (Yaj Jhajhria), Claire Wang (Canyon Crest, Class of ‘25), and Andrew Tsui (Canyon Crest, Class of ‘24). Our advisor will be Mr. Brian Shay.

There will be a single division playing MS-43, a regular-difficulty middle school question set produced by NAQT. Therefore, this tournament will serve as a qualifier for the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT).

For examples of the type of questions that will be used at this tournament, see here for NAQT’s Middle School series sample packet.

Location:
This tournament will be held at Canyon Crest Academy (5951 Village Center Loop Road, San Diego, CA 92130). Check-in will be in room E101 and rounds will most likely be held in the D and E buildings.

Date and Time:
The tournament will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2022. Check-in will begin at 8:15 A.M., and rounds will begin at 9:00 A.M. promptly. We anticipate finals to begin no later than 4:30 P.M.

More detailed logistics information will be provided to registered teams via email prior to the tournament.

Eligibility:
All middle school teams are welcome to participate at this tournament.

Format:
Teams can have up to six players per team, although only four can play at any given point in a match. Substitutions can be made at halftime in each game. This is a closed tournament, meaning that a team must only consist of players from the same school.

The tournament will adhere to the official NAQT rules with the exception that each round will run as two untimed halves with ten tossup-bonus cycles in each half. Computational math questions will not be skipped. There will be a preliminary round robin phase followed by reseeding based on win-loss record. Ties for reseedings will be resolved based on points per game, followed by points per bonus.

Pricing:
Pricing is per school, as follows:
$95 for first team
$80 for subsequent teams

Teams from schools that have not competed in any pyramidal-style quiz bowl tournaments in the past will pay the minimum fee of $54.

Pay by cash or make checks payable to CCA ASB. Please do not make checks out to any other person or entity. Checks or cash will be due at the start of the tournament during registration. There is a $10 dollar fee for late payment.

Discounts:
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system provided that has at least four working buzzers on both sides and is able to indicate which player has buzzed
-$5 for each 50 miles traveled, one-way, according to Google Maps

The minimum fee is $54 per team.

Registration:
Teams can sign up for this tournament here. Registration will end on Thursday, March 16, 2022 and all teams registering after this deadline will be waitlisted. There is a soft field cap of 24 teams, but this is subject to change if there is enough interest and staff.

All teams must have at least one capable and responsible adult chaperone with them throughout the duration of the tournament. This can be a teacher, coach, or parent of a player on the team. It is the responsibility of this adult to stay with their players throughout the day. Please contact us at the email provided below for any questions regarding this policy.

Food:
The shopping center across Village Center Loop Road (about a 5-10 minute walk away from campus) has food options such as Panera Bread, Trader Joe’s, Luna Grill, Fresh Brothers (pizza), Bonchon (Korean fried chicken), and much more.

Misconduct:
Misconduct, including but not limited to harassment and cheating, are not tolerated at CCA Quizbowl and at any of our events. Failure to comply with the PACE NSC Code of Conduct will result in players and/or teams responsible for the infraction being immediately ejected from the tournament and banned from future CCA Quizbowl events. Any incidents should be reported to staff or through the anonymous misconduct form.

Updates for this tournament will be communicated primarily by email or on this forum post. Please direct any inquiries to [email protected].

Thank you to everyone who competed at VALORANT today! Your presence made it a very enjoyable return to in-person middle school quizbowl for everyone after Southern California's three-year hiatus.

Additionally, I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who staffed this tournament. Thanks to our wonderful moderators and scorekeepers, we were able to run a very smooth tournament with very few delays or complications.

Congratulations to Oak Valley A, who went undefeated in ten games to win the tournament and qualify for the 2023 Middle School National Championship Tournament. Mt. Everest, Oak Valley B, and Marshall finished tied for second place, each with a win-loss record of 6-4. Full results and statistics have been posted on NAQT's website and the on the Quizbowl Resource Center. Category statistics have also been compiled and can be found here.

Once again, I am very thankful to everyone who attended today's tournament, and I look forward to seeing the growth of Southern California's middle school quizbowl scene!
