Susquehanna MS & Novice, April 1 (No joke!)

Post by x'x(-1)x'y »

Berwick Area Quiz Bowl proudly announces that the Susquehanna Novice Tournament will take place at Berwick Area High School on Saturday, April 1st. The Susquehanna Novice will be a two-division Middle School & High School Novice tournament and hopes to draw students new to Saturday tournaments from northern PA (IUs 4-6,9,10,16-21, and 29), as well as serve as a great prep tournament for middle school students from Pennsylvania Saturday tournament-regular schools.
The tournament is likely to use NAQT question sets MS-44 and IS-220A. As we wish to provide an experience for new players that will lead to future participation, we will encourage more-experienced high school players from across northeastern Pennsylvania to staff our tournament, though we recognize that opportunities for playing in tournaments in our area have been even scarcer than in the past.
The Middle School division will serve as a qualifier for NAQT’s Middle School National Championship Tournament. The champion will qualify, and should we have more than seven eligible teams attend, the runner-up will qualify as well.
Teams composed of freshman students may be competing with middle school students in the preliminary rounds depending on the number of teams we have attend. Our total field cap will be 16 teams, which may be expanded if we have sufficient staffing and buzzers
To register, please complete the form located here: https://forms.gle/ywijX913iBoC4xJY8 . We hope to see you in Berwick on April 1!

Tournament Details:
Date: Saturday, April 1, 2023
Location: Berwick Area Senior High School, 1100 Fowler Avenue, Berwick, PA 18603
Question Set: tentatively NAQT MS-44, IS-220A
Check-in from 8:15-8:45am
Round #1 Start Time at 9:00am
Morning Rounds (likely five)– expected completion of Morning Rounds by 12noon
Teams are guaranteed three afternoon rounds. The top-four MSNCT-eligible teams will have a round-robin playoff, while the top-six Novice teams will be split in two three-team playoff brackets, with a final placement round deciding the top-six positions.
Afternoon Meeting: 1:00 or 45 minutes after conclusion of Morning Rounds
Expected Awards Ceremony from 3:15pm-3:30pm.

Tournament Fees:
New to Saturday Quiz Bowl: $50/team
All regular teams: $80/school
Staff Discount: -$15/adult or experienced-student staffer
Buzzer Discount: -$10/buzzer

As this is a novice tournament, we will be imposing the following eligibility conditions on high school players:
1) Any student in 9th grade or below is automatically eligible (specifically including middle school students!)
2) Any student in 10th through 12th grade who has never played in a “Saturday tournament” is automatically eligible – this specifically does NOT disqualify anyone who has only played in WVIA Scholastic Scrimmage or Pennsylvania IU events.
3) Any sophomore, junior, or senior who has never scored higher than 20 ppg in a Varsity “Saturday tournament” is automatically eligible.
4) Any sophomore, junior, or senior who has scored higher than 50 ppg in a Varsity “Saturday tournament” is automatically ineligible. Any such student from northeastern PA would be welcomed to read/staff this event. (See discounts above.)
5) Any student that none of the above conditions apply (i.e., a junior/senior who has scored a “moderate” ppg average at a tournament) will be considered on a case-by-case basis, primarily based on the number of tournaments they’ve previously had the opportunity to play. Any such student would be welcomed to assist with staffing.
Coaches will be asked to submit potential rosters for eligibility purposes by March 23rd.
