Planet of the Guerrillas: a guerrilla film tournament (Spring 2023)

Post by Gene Harrogate »

Alan Smithee proudly presents: Planet of the Guerrillas, a guerrilla-style film tournament to be played in the first half of next year.

What is it?
This is a guerrilla film side-event, meaning that teams are expected to contribute a packet, which will not be edited. While this side event is meant to be played at a yet-to-be-determined Canadian weekend in the first half of next year, we welcome packet contributions from across America and the UK as well (and anyone is, of course, welcome to host other readings if they wish).

What sort of content should I write on?
Your packets should contain 21 powermarked tossups capped at 8 lines each (10 Times New Roman). Normal answerline formatting applies (bold and underline required words).

This side event has no explicit academic or pop culture slant. However, we do ask that writers make some effort to vary their answerlines among regions and time periods (i.e., no packets consisting entirely of Czech New Wave or anime). Please also make sure that the vast majority of your answerlines are gettable by the end for a good majority of film-interested teams.

EDIT: Your packet should include a minimum of:
2 questions mostly or entirely about films released before 1970
2 questions mostly or entirely about films released between 1970-2005
2 questions mostly or entirely about films released after 2005
2 questions mostly or entirely about films in languages other than English
1 clue about a fictional gorilla (or other non-human primate)

Please do not write more than half your packet (10 questions) on any one of the following: films from before 1970, films from after 2005, or films in languages other than English.

Varied types of clues and answerlines are good. Remember that along with tossing up a director, actor, or movie, you can also toss up countries, fictional locations, specific scenes, specific objects, technology/concepts from the film industry, composers, writers, settings, common shooting locations, occupations, notable techniques, etc.. Along with cluing actors, character names, and titles, you can also clue specific shots, criticism, wardrobe elements, special effects, music, screenplays/writers, allusions, etc. etc. etc..

Though most of your questions should be explicitly about movies, feel free to include a couple more tangential ideas as long as they are on theme (i.e., a commonlink on a movie referenced in novels, some small screen, a notable music video).

Gee, I can't wait! Where should I send my packet?
You can send them to sheenali.130 at gmail.com. I'll set a deadline once we have a better sense of when the main event will happen. If you intend to write a packet, feel free to let me know by whatever means you prefer (it helps if I know what kind of volume we'll be getting).

I wish you good writing!

Sorry, I thought the announcement was clear that there should be only questions on gorillas.

Is there any more specific idea (like a month) when this set is intended for? I'd like to make sure I don't sit down and hammer this out too late

Good question, right now we're targeting a weekend in the second half of May.

This set has a great title. Too bad I don't like movies that much.

Do we have an idea of where this will be run at? That would prompt me to write something for this (besides my 10 questions on gorilla-themed films).

The main site of this mirorr will take place in Toronto on Sunday, May 21st. The only cost of entry is submitting a packet. If you don't plan on playing this site, we would still love to have your packets in time to hear them! We would also very much welcome additional sites afterwards.

A sign up sheet for the Toronto site can be found here.

On Sunday, we played a highly enjoyable first mirror of this set at Toronto. If you'd like to play these packets at a summer event, please email me at henrya20 at gmail.com. I'll also host an online mirror/reading at some point in late summer.

The event is currently at 14 packets, so submitting questions will not be mandatory for future mirrors. You are, of course, still welcome to submit a packet if you'd like.
