Tennessee 2022-2023

Post by TusculumPearson »

For a host of reasons - personal, professional, and public - the plans that we strove for in 2021-2022 didn't come off as completely as we wanted in Tennessee. What did happen, though - the reestablishment of a Tennessee State Quizbowl Tournament - was a major first step towards authentic competition and growing participation in the state of Tennessee, one that we hope to build on in the coming year.

The midstate remains most active, and remains the driver of most of our events. Brian Hoover of Gallatin High School has once again assembled a Tennessee state quizbowl calendar on Google Docs, and that document should be considered the updated standard for our calendar for the coming year.

Fall high school events include the oft-planned-and-canceled Tusculum Earlybird at my place in Greeneville on September 24, the tenatively-scheduled Vanderbilt ABC on October 29, Portland High's fall NAQT tournament on November 5, and Cookeville High's fall NAQT tournament on November 12. (The calendar doesn't have any West Tennessee events on it at present;

We'll be in position to announce a statewide competition structure leading to this year's Tennessee State Quizbowl Tournament, scheduled for March 4, when we get through November.

Thanks to all who've supported and extended good wishes towards our work in reestablishing a vigorous Tennessee circuit.

East Tennessee news:

Coaches will be receiving information over the course of the day today concerning the Tusculum Earlybird, scheduled for September 24 at Tusculum in Greeneville.

Coaches should have already received information about the Secret City Classic, scheduled for October 8 at Roane State-Oak Ridge.

Please don't hesitate to contact [email protected] or [email protected] for information about either; Dren and I get messages back and forth to one another on the regular.

East Tennessee Quizbowl will present a regional championship tournament on Feburary 4, 2023 at Jefferson County High School. Because this tournament is going to focus exclusively on teams from the east side of the state, this will be the official forums announcement of that tournament on hsquizbowl. Coaches of East Tennessee teams will have received email; if you were missed in the contact, please email me at [email protected] to get on the East Tennessee mailing list.

This will be an NAQT tournament, contested on IS-218A. This is in NAQT’s Introductory Invitational series, which is accessible to high school quiz players of all levels.

(There is another event in the state, the Sumner County Invitational at Gallatin High School, which will also be contested on IS-218A. This is intentional, and is happening in anticipation of a future statewide regional tournament structure. There will be means to compare team results on tournament day across the state and assess regional strength. We encourage East Tennessee teams to play our regional competition, and Middle Tennessee teams to play the Sumner County Invitational.)

Host contact is Raymona Pedigo <[email protected]>; contact Pedigo with questions about the travel to or facilities at the Jefferson County HS campus.

East Tennessee Quizbowl is providing staffing and logistical support for this event. The tournament director is Chuck Pearson; contact Pearson through Facebook (https://facebook.com/chuck.pearson) or by email at [email protected] with any questions about tournament format or associated logistics.

See the tournament page on hsquizbowl for fee structure, or contact Pearson for the full announcement and to address questions.

Coaches across the state should have been contacted about entry into the 2nd annual Tennessee State Quizbowl Tournament, once again being held at Currey Ingram Academy in Brentwood on March 25, 2023. Since this event is closed to teams outside of the state of Tennessee, this will be the sole forum post for the event.

The tournament is open to one team per school in the state of Tennessee. Once again, the tournament will be run without an entry fee; sponsors (to be announced) will be covering the costs associated with the event. Unlike previous state championship structures for Tennessee, there is no qualification requirement for this event; the field for the event is open.

We are asking that teams registering to participate in this tournament bring one person to either read, scorekeep, or help run the tournament in some form.

The tournament will run on NAQT rules (powers, negs, no bounceback on bonuses) on NAQT set IS-219.

Registration can be completed on the NAQT website:
https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=13457

If you have questions about this event, contact Brian Hoover <[email protected]>.

We look forward to seeing the best Tennessee has to offer in Brentwood on March 25.

Hello quizbowl players, coaches, and sponsors!

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 6, 2023 for Hoover High School’s first ever Scholastic Competition of Utterly Ridiculous Vapid Yahoos (SCURVY) tournament. Hoover High School is located in Hoover, Alabama:

1000 Buccaneer Drive
Hoover, AL 35244

This tournament will be a house set written by current Hoover players and recent Hoover graduates with a little help from some great minds in quizbowl. The SCURVY (viewtopic.php?p=393853#p393853) packet is a regs+ and is intended to be a Nats prep for competitive teams with more experienced players. Inexperienced players are welcome, but the question set difficulty is moderate to harder high school level.

LOGISTICS:

Our field is tentatively set at 24 teams, but we are open to expanding the field based on interest and reader availability.

On May 6th, on-site registration will begin at 8:30 central time, and play will begin at as close to 9:00 as possible.

The registration fee is $80 for the first team and $70 for each additional team registered from an individual school. At this point, there is no cap on the number of teams per school allowed to register, but that is contingent on interest and reader availability.

A $5 discount will be given for bringing a fully-functioning buzzer set (up to 3 discounts per school). A $10 discount will be given to schools located a minimum of 100 miles away OR any out-of-state school that attends.

Lunch will be sold on site and will be cash only. Lunch price will be $6 for two slices of pizza and a drink; vegetarian options will be available, but we will be unable to prepare for gluten allergies. There are also plenty of fast food options within a 5-minute drive of the school.

We will also sell additional snacks and drinks throughout the day (cash only).

In order to indicate your intent to register, please fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM: (https://docs.google.com/forms/u/1/d/e/1 ... sp=sf_link).

If you have questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

We hope to see you there.
