2023 FQBA Florida State Championships @ UF (3/25/23)

Post by nicole. »

I am pleased to announce, in affiliation with the University of Florida Quiz Bowl Team, the 2023 FQBA State Championships, in-person, in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida! All important information is below.

The tournament will be directed by John Nienajadlo. You can contact him at [email protected].

Location and Dates

The 2023 FQBA State Championships will be hosted in Matherly Hall at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, on March 25th, 2023. This is around 90 minutes from Jacksonville, 120 minutes from Orlando, and 120 minutes from Tampa.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 25th, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with registration opening at 8:30 AM.

Questions/Format

The FQBA State Championships will be using the NAQT IS-219 set. We will be using the standard 20/20 format and NAQT rules, but there will be no game clock and there will be 5 seconds after each tossup instead of 3.

Teams will be fairly placed into preliminary brackets before being re-seeded for playoffs. Teams will be guaranteed a minimum of 8 games; teams will be expected to play all available rounds, even if your team is not in contention for the championship.

Teams

There are a maximum of 6 players per team, four of whom may play at once. If you wish to bring more players than that, please register additional teams. There are no exceptions to this rule. Teams may play short, with one player as a minimum. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from “A” to “B” or otherwise.

Teams must have performed reasonably well in a Florida Quiz Bowl event or a reasonable equivalent (such as History Bowl) to sign up.

Only students who go to school in the state of Florida will be eligible to play. We are not accepting out-of-state registrations.

The field is capped at 24 teams. You will be placed onto a waitlist if you miss the cutoff, and the field may expand if we get more staff.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via phone or email prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

It is not mandatory for a coach to attend with their team, however, an adult chaperone is required.

Readers, Buzzers, and Question Sets

There will be buzzer discounts for this tournament. Teams will get $10 off for each buzzer set they bring, with up to $20 in total discounts.

Prizes

Trophies will be awarded to the top 2 teams after each tournament and the individual with the highest average Points per Game overall. The eight or so high scorers at each tournament will be awarded book prizes.

Fees

This tournament will cost $80 a team. There will be a $10 dollar discount for bringing buzzer sets, with up to two buzzer sets being counted for discounts.

Registration:

Registration is here.

Please ensure that you register prior to the day of the tournament! Registration closes on March 19th, 2023.

Stats

Full and complete team and individual statistics will be posted within 24 hours after the completion of this event.
