HFT XV @ Duke (4/15/2023)

Post by Heiliger Dankgesang »

I am pleased to announce that Duke Quiz Bowl will be hosting a mirror of Harvard “Fall” Tournament (HFT) XV, a high school regular-plus tournament, on April 15, 2023. Further information about HFT XV can be found here.

Kevin Jiang and I will be directing this tournament. Please email any questions about this tournament to jacob [DOT] egol [AT] duke [DOT] edu and kevin [DOT] jiang [AT] duke [DOT] edu, or feel free to post them in this thread. We hope to see you in Durham soon!

Time and Place:
This tournament will be held on April 15, 2023 in Hudson Hall, located on the Engineering Quad on West Campus. The opening meeting will begin at 8:45 am EDT and gameplay will begin as close to 9:00 am as possible.

COVID-19 Policy:
Since Duke University currently does not require masking in classrooms, masks will be optional at this tournament. However, all attendees must be vaccinated.

Registration and Field Size:
To register for this tournament, please fill out this Google Form. Registration will close on April 8 at 11:59 pm.
This tournament’s field will be capped at 20 teams.

Fees and Payment: (these are the same fees as for the HFT mainsite)
Base fee: $100 per team
Buzzer discount: –$10 per working buzzer system (must have power cord and 8 functional buzzers, maximum three buzzer systems per organization)
Team-provided staff discount: –$15 per experienced moderator with laptop (must be familiar with quizbowl rules/scoring, and have good pronunciation, speed, and reading skills)
Distance discount: –$5 for every 100 miles traveled one way, rounded down (using distance from your school to Duke University as determined by Google Maps)
Minimum fee: $40 per team

We will accept payment via check, cash, Venmo, or PayPal. Teams will be provided with an invoice and an account/address for payment once they register. Any questions or concerns regarding payment should be sent to us directly.

Parking / Lunch:
This tournament will take place on West Campus. For Hudson Hall, the easiest place to park is the Bryan Center Garage (125 Science Drive, Durham, NC 27708), which costs $2.00/hour with a $12.00 daily maximum. Duke Quiz Bowl will reimburse parking fees. There is also a surface lot at the Bryan Center, but we recommend parking in the covered garage instead because the surface lot does not have a daily maximum and may therefore be more expensive for the day.

For lunch, there are several options on West Campus including the Brodhead Center, Panda Express, The Loop, and McDonalds. There are also a variety of eateries located on Erwin Road around a 12-minute walk from Hudson Hall, including Chipotle, Noodles & Co., Smashburger, Enzo’s Pizza, and Heavenly Buffaloes.

Code of Conduct:
Duke Quiz Bowl is committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. All of this tournament’s players and staff will be required to abide by the 2021 WORKSHOP Code of Conduct (with online-specific protocols adjusted for being in-person).

The field has not budged since March 23, and this tournament is scheduled to happen in just around 2 weeks-- this is your chance to sign up!! We really hope to see you in Durham soon! If you have any questions, please post them here or email me and Kevin (our emails are listed in the original post).

The field is still at 4 registered teams— if there are not 6 teams registered by Monday afternoon, then we may likely cancel our tournament due to a lack of interest.

Due to a lack of interest / insufficient number of registered teams, we are regretfully canceling this tournament. We apologize to the four teams who were already registered. We wish everyone a successful remainder of this year's quizbowl season, and we hope to see you in Durham another time.
