NASAT 2023: congratulations Illinois Blue!

Post by AKKOLADE »

International Quiz Bowl Tournaments (IQBT) is pleased to announce the 2023 National All-Star Academic Tournament (NASAT). This will be the thirteenth NASAT.

NASAT will be hosted on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18. It will be held online. The tournament will convene at 10:00 AM Eastern on Saturday and run until about 7 PM. On Sunday, it will run from 10 AM to about 5:00 PM. These times may be adjusted as necessary, but any adjustments will be announced well ahead of the tournament.

This tournament will once again be open to all-star teams representing all states, the District of Columbia, all US territories, and all Canadian provinces and equivalents (as well as state or province-equivalent divisions of any other countries). Each state or equivalent may enter multiple teams, with up to six players on its roster, up to four of whom may be playing at any one time. Any player who was enrolled in the 12th grade or below in a school physically located in that state during the 2022-2023 academic year is eligible to play on his or her state's team. Generally speaking, home school students are also eligible; any questions about eligibility will be answered by IQBT as needed.

This tournament is intended for states seeking an all-star event. We encourage single-school teams looking for national championships to investigate two such championships run by groups that are unaffiliated with IQBT: the National Scholastics Championship run by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence and the High School National Championship Tournament run by National Academic Quiz Tournaments.

As always, we will use a normal format comparable to regular-season events: games will consist of twenty tossups, with a thirty-point bonus being played after each correct tossup answer. Teams will play head-to-head, two at a time. "Performance-based," multimedia, calculation, and pop culture questions will not be used. Teams will play a number of games in line with other national championship events over the two days of the tournament; over the last three NASATs, teams played at least 14 games and as many as 17. Because this event will be played by highly skilled all-star teams, the question difficulty will be higher than that used at existing national championships such as the NSC and HSNCT. The style and subject distribution of the questions will be quite similar to existing “modified ACF” sets.

Eve Fleisig will be the NASAT set’s head editor.

The entry fee is $560 per team, plus a 6% state sales tax. Each state is welcome and encouraged to register additional (B and on) teams for NASAT. It is vastly preferred if you pay ahead of time if at all possible.

If 14 teams do not register and pay for this event by May 31, 2023, it will be canceled and rescheduled for 2024.

All teams must submit an application to IQBT for entry into the tournament. In the vast majority of these cases, applications will be accepted outright. However, if more than one contingent from a state seeks to enter this tournament, IQBT will evaluate applications from each potential team and determine who may represent their state at the National All-Star Academic Tournament. The only criterion that will be used in this decision is our assessment, based on a review of the players' achievements in the 2022-23 competition year, of which team is likely to perform the best at the tournament.

IQBT will once again use a rolling application procedure: teams who submit applications to IQBT on or before March 25 will be notified of IQBT's decision no later than April 1. We may also approve an application submitted from this point onward as soon as "immediately" if we find it unlikely that a stronger team from the state could be assembled. Teams who submit applications to IQBT between March 25 and June 1, inclusive, will be notified no later than one week after the application is received. In other words, March 25 is not a hard deadline, and you may still enter the tournament afterwards, though you are encouraged to start forming and fundraising as soon as possible so that a logistical problem does not cause an interested team to miss the tournament. Team applications and recruitment will be handled by Fred Morlan; you can email me at [email protected].

The tournament will be directed by Fred Morlan.

I’m very excited for this tournament and am looking forward to another wonderful competition!

I've notified the teams that have already registered of this via email, but: starting with this year's NASAT, IQBT must charge a 6% sales tax on entry fees for tournaments that we organize.

If your NASAT team is looking for practice material, our Undergraduate Championship set is available to purchase for that purpose. NASAT will be about as difficult as the Undergraduate Championship set. For information on using the set and the cost of it, please email me at [email protected].

The top five from each bracket advance to the playoff bracket. Here are the playoff pictures. I'll put a caveat here that if I messed up my math - and it's nearly midnight on a tournament weekend, there's a definite chance I did - then all of this is wrong, and all of this is non-binding in that case.

Shrimp bracket: California, Illinois White, and New Jersey A have all qualified for the playoffs at 7-1.

Missouri A (5-3), Ohio (5-3), and Virginia (4-4) are the three remaining teams eligible for two spots in the playoffs. Virginia will play Missouri A, while Ohio will play Asia B.

If Missouri A wins, Missouri A and Ohio, regardless of the result of Asia B vs. Ohio.

If Ohio and Virginia win, Ohio (6-3) advances, and Missouri A & Virginia (both 5-4) will have a full packet tiebreaker game.

If Asia B and Virginia win, there will be a tiebreaker between Missouri A, Ohio, and Virginia, all at 5-4, on half-packet tiebreaker games. These matches would be seeded by PPG, with the two highest scoring teams playing for one spot, and the loser of that game facing the lowest scoring team of the three playing for the second spot.

Grits bracket: Illinois Blue has a bye for round 9. They've guaranteed themselves a playoff spot at 8-0. Illinois Orange has also clinched a spot at 5-2, with a game against Arkansas remaining.

Asia A (4-3), Kentucky A (4-3), Missouri B (4-3), and Maryland Red (3-4) are all in contention for the remaining three spots. Asia A faces Pennsylvania; Kentucky A faces New Jersey B; and Missouri B faces Maryland Red.

If Maryland Red loses, they are eliminated from playoff contention, and the 4-3 trio of Asia A, Kentucky A, and Missouri B all advance, regardless of result in their remaining games.

If Maryland Red wins, they are tied with at least Missouri B, and with Asia A and/or Kentucky A in the circumstances where those teams lose their round 9 games. A tiebreaker would be held between these two, three, or four teams. If two teams are tied, there will be a full-packet tiebreaker game. If three teams are tied, there will be a mini-tournament like the one described in the last Shrimp bracket scenario above. If four teams are tied for three spots, there will be a mini-tournament with the teams seeded by preliminary PPG. 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 would play on half-packets; the winners would advance to the playoffs. The losing teams of those matches would play a half-packet match for the fifth and final playoff spot.

Both brackets have a tie after the preliminary rounds that affects who makes which playoff bracket.

In Shrimp, Virginia and Missouri A are tied for one spot in the top playoff bracket and are playing a full game tiebreaker to determine who gets it.

In Grits, Maryland Red, Kentucky A, and Missouri B are tied for two spots. They're playing two tiebreaker games on half-packets.
