UW Spring Classic @ UW (20 May 23)

Post by ella.happy »

The Quizbowl team at the University of Washington is elated to announce our in person Spring Classic tournament! After our smashing success in the Winter, we are excited to move to this tournament to the real world :) The tournament will occur on Saturday, May 20th of 2023 in Savery Hall on UW campus. I, Ella L'Heureux, will be the tournament director and I can be contacted at [email protected].

Question Set + Rules
This will be a regular high school tournament using IS-219 and 220A. There will tentatively be 2 divisions, one played at high school regular difficulty (varsity) [IS-219] and one at high school novice difficulty (JV) [IS-220A]. There is a soft cap of 12 teams total. Once 12 teams are reached, more teams will be admitted according to our staffing capabilities. If one division does not have enough sign ups, the fields will be merged to the difficulty with more teams. (i.e., if 2 teams sign up for the varsity division and 6 for JV, all 8 teams will play JV. If 1 teams signs up for JV and 7 for varsity, all 8 teams will play varsity)

We will be using modified NAQT rules. Rounds will not be timed, they will consist of 20 power-marked tossup/bonus cycles.

Eligibility
This tournament is open to all high schools in the "Northwest" region (WA, OR, ID, AK, MT, WY, UT, CO, British Columbia, and Alberta). Middle school players/teams who would like to play should contact the TD ([email protected]) and will be added based on availability.

Teams will be capped at 6 players with 4 players playing at any given time. Schools are welcome to register more than one team.

Date, Time, Location
The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 20th of 2023. Check-in will begin at 8:30am, a general players' meeting will occur at 8:45am, and play will begin at 9:00am.

The tournament will take place in Savery Hall. This location can be entered directly into Google Maps and I recommend doing so (it is not adjacent to a road, so putting its proper address would be more confusing). There is a nearby parking garage and street parking, both paid.

Fees
Base cost: $100
Staffer Discount: -$10 per staffer with laptop
Buzzer Discount: -$15 per working, four player buzzer set.
Travel Discount: -$10 per 50 miles, one way (as determined by Google Maps and TD)
Minimum Cost: $30

Discounts will be awarded first-come first-served (in regards to buzzers and staffers). Teams will be notified of their final discount status the Monday before the tournament (May 15th). Invoices will be sent with final discount status and should be paid on (or before) tournament day by PayPal or check. If this is not possible for you for whatever reason, please contact TD ([email protected]) ASAP.

If price is a barrier to your team, please reach out!

Chaperones
We request that one adult chaperone be present for the entire day per school that attends (not necessarily per team). This chaperone does not need to be school staff/faculty.

Food
A lunch break will occur halfway through the tournament, starting approximately between 11:30 and 12:30 and will last for 45 minutes after the last room finishes. There are many restaurants and food stalls to get food within a 10 minute walking distance, including chains like MOD Pizza, Chipotle, and HMart-to-Go, but also many local places that serve a variety of price points and types of cuisine. More information about this will go out to registered teams as the tournament approaches. Teams may also elect to bring food from home if they choose. There is a snack and drink vending machine in Savery Hall as well.

COVID-19
The UW no longer requires masks on campus. However, if any player or coach tests positive for COVID-19 in the week preceding the tournament, we ask that you inform us and do not attend the tournament.

Misconduct
All forms of misconduct, including but not limited to harassment and cheating, will not be tolerated at this tournament—all players, coaches, and spectators will be held to the PACE code of conduct. Any incidents should be immediately reported to staff or through the anonymous misconduct form here.

Registration
Registration is open and you can register via NAQT's website here. Registration will be considered final on the Sunday before the tournament, May 13th. If you would like to register after that date, please contact TD ([email protected]). Cancellations after May 13th must pay the minimum cost of the tournament ($30).
