ARCHIVE - Online Mirror - 6/24/23

Post by Mike Bentley »

Inspired by the no-longer-current-events packets I recently read on Discord (which will be posted to the archive soon), I've decided my next tournament is going to be called ARCHIVE (A Randomish Collection of Choice Tossup Ideas, some Very Elderly). Think of this as my version of a set like TELEOLOGY or Scattergories but with a little less polish than those sets.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, June 24th starting at 12 PM Eastern. A sign-up sheet can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing. Please email me at [email protected] to officially register.

Happy to have in-person mirrors of this set at side events weekends, although it's already getting pretty crowded this summer.

This tournament has 10 packets, each with 24 tossups. The eccentric distribution is as follows:

6 History - Skewed more Western and recent, but with some world + older content.
4 Visual Arts - Mostly, but not exclusively, on 20th + 21st century art. More photography than you may expect.
3 Literature - Heavily skewed towards long fiction, contemporary literature, and reception/biography clues.
3 Pop Culture - More videogames, less music than you'd expect in an evenly distributed trash set.
3 "Tech Tournament" - Roughly 1 computer, 1 science history, 1 business history question per packet like what you'd see at Shock of the Old / Myth of the Machine.
5 Everything Else - Lots of mixed academic, some standard questions in categories like religion or mythology not mentioned above. Don't expect much science, audio arts, or social science here.

In terms of difficulty, most (but not all) of the answer lines will be ones that could easily come up in a 3-dot set or lower. But the clues for some of these easier answers could be pretty tough through most of the question.

Similar to GRAB BAG, a trash tournament I wrote in 2017, this tournament is going to have an uneven distribution within categories. If you scan through that tournament, you'll see that the film distribution was heavily skewed to recent Oscar nominated films that I had seen, much more so than in a "regular" trash tournament such as COLT. In addition to the above-mentioned distribution oddness, I'm doing less than I would in a regular set in varying the type of clues I use.

The reason I have these 240ish questions ready to play is that most of these questions already existed in some rough form in my large archive of unfinished questions (hence the tournament's name). This means some of the questions will be a little less "fresh" than in the typical set I produce but will hopefully still be a fun time for everyone.

All questions will have 20-point super powers and 15-point powers (with a handful of exceptions that are power throughout). There will be more variation in question length than in a typical set, with a few as short as maybe 6 lines and a few others spilling over to more indulgent lengths. All questions will be regular tossups, no "speed checks" like from my aforementioned current events packets.

For the Zoom mirror, entry fee with be $20 per player. I'll pay $50 per person for staffing.

By the way, you may have heard me talk about a "making of" tournament I'm also working on. This is a different set from that. Look for an announcement for that tournament some point in the not too distant future.

It's looking pretty likely this will work best for me on June 17th or 18th, but if there's a strong preference for one of the other dates I'll reconsider. Will make a final announcement by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Looking for teammates for this, preferably people who know art, computers, or computer art.

Actually, I forgot that 6/17 is NASAT so may go with 6/24. Make your voice known in the poll if you have a strong preference.

Reminder that this tournament is taking place in 2 weeks. Would be great to get at least 8 teams signed up.

In talking with people, I think I maybe oversold how old the set will feel. There should be plenty of fresher clues and answers too.

That's too bad--I wanted this to feel old and strange.

It's likely there will be an 11th packet for a finals if needed.

Still lots of room for people to sign up. And could use some more staffers (you'll get $50 for your trouble).
