IQBT Undergraduate Championship Qualification Event - Online - 11/2-11/5, 2022

Post by AKKOLADE »

International Quiz Bowl Tournaments, LLC will be hosting a qualifying event for the IQBT Undergraduate Championship from Thursday, November 2 to Sunday, November 5.

This event will consist of 60 bonuses played by each team, much like the qualifier for 2021 ACF Nationals. The difficulty of this set will be three dots per the College Quiz Bowl Calendar Difficulty Scale.

The entry fee will be $50 per team. Teams can be made up of up to four players, all of whom must be undergraduate students as defined below. Schools can register multiple teams.

Staffers will be paid $15 per qualification session read.

Editors will be announced in the near future.

Information about eligibility

Teams may only be made up of teams that qualify as undergraduate students, per the following information.

A competition year is defined as beginning August 1 of a year and concludes on the subsequent July 31.

A postsecondary degree is an associate’s, bachelor’s, doctorate, or master’s degree.

An accredited school is one that offers classes towards earning a postsecondary degree.

A class is a course taken for credit at an accredited school. Classes include practical experiences such as internships or work placement programs. Classes may be taken online.

An undergraduate student is defined as:
• Having graduated from high school or have completed a GED.
• Having not graduated with a postsecondary degree (excluding associate's degrees taking fewer than four years to earn) before the competition year.
• Having completed no more than ten semesters of post-high school education.
• Taking two classes over the competition year

To compete in the fall semester, an undergraduate student must be taking two “normal” classes worth of credit at the time, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours.

To compete in the spring semester, an undergraduate student must be taking or have taken a total of two “normal” classes worth of credit over the academic year, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours. Students who fulfill this requirement and graduated after the fall semester are eligible in the spring semester.

Question distribution

The question distribution of subjects is as follows:

Teams can register after October 24, 2023, but they will not have priority in selecting their time slot for registration. They will be able to pick from the remaining time slots as they are available.

I have received time requests from every team. Thank you!

In case it's easier to read, I've put the schedule into this Word doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R-Y ... sp=sharing

It's sorted three different ways in the document - chronologically, by school alphabetically, and by moderator alphabetically.

All teams have played. There are a few protests outstanding, but those won't directly affect if a team makes the top 30, just final placement.

Ties will be broken by the number of points scored on the five extra bonuses.

Finalized standings will be announced by Monday.

There is still one protest outstanding that could affect placement in the top 20. There are no other outstanding protests.

The tiebreaking method that is being applied is as follows:

1) Which team scored the most points on the extra five bonuses.
2) If a tie remains, which team scored the most points on only the first of the extra bonuses.
3) If a tie remains, which team scored the most points on only the second of the extra bonuses.

This was sufficient to break any ties in the standings.

We announced that 30 teams would initially be invited to participate in the 2023 IQBT Undergraduate Championship Tournament. Oklahoma A will take 30th place on a tiebreaker over Ohio State B and Alabama. All three schools scored 930 points on the first 60 bonuses. Oklahoma A scored 100 points on the extra five bonuses, which puts them ahead of Ohio State B (90 points) and Alabama (70 points).

We will explore expanding the field depending on demand from teams to play and the availability of staff.

I will announce full results upon the resolution of this last outstanding protest. Thank you for your patience.

I do need to ask everyone to continue to refrain from posting about the content of the questions on social media or sharing information with anyone outside of your team or a team that played for now. We are using this set for an event in the United Kingdom.

All team contacts have been sent a link to a Discord server for discussion of the set itself and the event; you can also email me at [email protected] if you have feedback you'd like to share.

I'd like to thank everyone that made this event possible:

Our editors: Kurtis Droge, John Lawrence, Eric Mukherjee, and Matt Weiner
Our writers: Joseph Krol, Lalit Maharjan, and Briana Magin
Our staffers: Tomás Aguilar-Fraga, Jordan Bable, Sarah Bender, Eric Chang, Jacob Egol, Ganon Evans, Benjamin Fry, Liz Fujita, Jackson Hopper, Devin Humphreys, Kevin Kodama, Mike Laudermith, Katherine Lei, Lalit Maharjan, Ava Morelli, Eric Mukherjee, Lia Rathburn, Victor Savage, Jonathen Settle, Clark Smith, Luke Van De Weghe, Adrian Wong, and Geoffrey Wu

We’ve resolved all outstanding protests and have finalized the standings of the event. The top 30 teams will be invited to the Undergraduate Championship Tournament, which will be held online on March 4 and 5. We are exploring expanding the field if there is sufficient interest from teams and we are able to get enough staff.

The tiebreakers used are, in order:

A) Overall score on extra bonuses
B) Score on first extra bonus
C) Score on second extra bonus
D) Score on third extra bonus
E) Score on fourth extra bonus
F) Score on fifth extra bonus
G) Score on first bonus overall

Here are the final standings:

1. Brown, 1250 points
2. Chicago B, 1200 (outscored Cornell A on the tiebreaking bonuses, 100 to 80)
3. Cornell A, 1200
4. Harvard, 1190
5. Illinois A, 1180
6. Toronto A, 1150
7. Chicago A, 1130 (outscored Georgia Tech A on the tiebreaking bonuses, 100 to 90)

11. WUSTL A, 1080
12. Rutgers A, 1070
13. Texas Aramis, 1060
14. Duke A, 1050
15. Waterloo, 1040 (due to moderator error, McGill wasn't read the tiebreakers; this tie doesn't affect qualification, so I’m going to leave it as it is)
15. McGill, 1040
17. Yale, 1030
18. UCLA, 1020 (outscored North Florida on the tiebreaking bonuses, 80 to 70)

I wanted to remind everyone that there is a Discord server for set discussion. A link was emailed to every team's contact that played; if you have played this but need a link, feel free to ask me for one via email.

I'm setting the official registration deadline for the Undergraduate Championship as January 15, 2023. At that point, non-registrations will be treated as declines for invitations, and subsequent teams will be invited after that.

According to my records, four teams have yet to pay for this event:

Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Mississippi
UBC

I've sent multiple emails to your team's registration contact with these invoices. Please submit payment as soon as you are able. Thank you.
