The Kiruna Index: A New Quizbowl Performance Metric

Post by Celery Salt »

I made an advanced metric sort of like in sports that measures how dominant a player is individually. There are two Kiruna Index ratings, one is for HSNCT, one is for PACE. I analyzed past HSNCT and PACE results to make the statistic a more holistic evaluation of individual performance. I added teams from my school, TJHSST, and various top teams from HSNCT 2023. If you would want to be added lmk. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Also, please don't make this toxic/competitive, I just made this statistic because it's interesting to see how far you can go with numbers and stats, and I just wanted to make a more holistic metric than PPG. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

Two questions:

1) How do you calculate the Kiruna Index?

2) Could you apply the Kiruna Index to MS tournaments? (I'm an MS player who's pretty good, so wondering if you could calculate my Kiruna Index)

Sorry for the late response as I'm rarely active on this forum. The index is calculated based on powers, tens, and negs. The index uses these three stats to generate a value that aligns with the consensus top player rankings. I will expand the index's factors this year though, by factoring in team placement and how well your teammates do.

I'm probably only going to post the Kiruna Index every high school nationals (HSNCT+PACE) and this year I'm planning to put more teams onto the sheet.
