CULEX [7/23/23, online]
RPG tossup answerers, here's some good news! CULEX is finally upon us. The set you thought would never be written was finally written. CULEX is slated to take place on Sunday, July 23, on Zoom. More information about the set can be found here: viewtopic.php?t=24983.
expansion: The current plan is to expand the set just a little bit to accommodate for games that have been released since the beginning of 2022, as this event was originally slated to happen last year. [This expansion ended up happening.]
Format: Let's say teams of 3 for now. The tournament will consist of 7 rounds of 21 tossups each plus the superboss tossup. Rounds 8 through 10 and, perhaps, the audio packet, are slated to be played as a shootout after the tournament proper. (This is subject to change.)
Tournament fees: Let's go with $10 per player [it is an extensive tournament!] I will pay moderators $10 each.
Player/staff Sign-up sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0
update: I was hoping to keep this a fun secret, but there is approximately one tossup on Mario RPGs per packet.

Is Friday a better day for everyone? The poll results originally said Saturday, but we can certainly move it to Friday night if people are more inclined to play then.

Re: CULEX online [Summer 2023]
CULEX has been moved to sometime this summer. A date poll has been included in the updated announcement.

Re: CULEX [7/23/23, online]
Just a reminder that CULEX will be taking place this Sunday, so be sure to sign up sometime in the next few days if you plan on playing but haven't done so yet. The .pdf for CULEX bingo is included with this message.
Certainly you have no idea what I have tossed up, however that's ok, you can make educated guesses! Answers need to be specific answerlines. For example, "something about Final Fantasy" will receive 0 points.
2 points will be rewarded per correct answer, also bonus points for the following patterns:
4 corners (5)
inside diamond (5)
outside diamond (5)
postage stamp [2x2 square] (5)
vertical, horizontal, diagonal line of length 5 (5)
|/, T, X, or L of any type, as long as the lines are of length 5 (15)
blackout (9999)
Each player can submit a card. Non-Jake/Drew moderators may also submit a card. If you can't make it for some reason you can still submit a card.

Oh no, is playing this tournament going to be like playing an actual JRPG? What am I getting myself into?

After considering a few things, it'll probably start around 12PM CST or thereabouts, could be slightly later than that.

Speaking entirely selfishly here (as someone who works night shift on Sunday night), given the length of the tournament I would request that you not move the start time later and try to keep things running smoothly, thanks :)The Ununtiable Twine wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 2:53 pmAfter considering a few things, it'll probably start around 12PM CST or thereabouts, could be slightly later than that.

Re: CULEX [7/23/23, online]
Congratulations to "You tread the path of darkness. The crystal will shed no light for you." (Jason Thompson, Dylan Minarik) on going 8-1 and winning CULEX. The stats are available at https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/8 ... all_games/. Thanks to everyone who came out to play and thanks to Drew Scheeler for co-authoring the set with me and moderating today.
Also, we played round 10 and the extras in shootout form - the results are as follows:
Jason 10/8/5 205 (including a 7/5/4 game on the round 10 portion of the shootout. He had a stretch where he powered 5 out of 6 questions.)
Billy 2/2/2 40
Lafer 1/3/1 40
Phil 1/2/1 30
Ryan 2/1/4 20
Tejas 0/1/2 0
Michael 0/0/0 0
Noah 0/0/0 0
We'll play the audio packet at some point in the future.
