Humberto: A SoCal COOT Mirror (09/16/23)

Post by Taiwan Wren-Babbler »

I am pleased to announce Humberto, an open mirror of the 2023 Cambridge Oxford Open Tournament in Southern California on September 16th, 2023, at UCSD. The tournament director for the event will be Jason Cheng.

DATE / TIME: The tournament will take place on Saturday, September 16th, 2023. Registration will begin at 9:40 AM. The first round will begin promptly at 10:00 AM.

LOCATION: The tournament will be held on the UCSD campus. The tournament will be held inside of Geisel library.

ELIGIBILITY: All persons - regardless of age, level of education, or status as an active quizbowl player - are eligible to play the tournament in whatever combination of teams they choose. A team formation sheet is available here.

REGISTRATION: Registration can be completed by emailing cheng jason 7 AT gmail (without the spaces/replacing the AT) with the following information:
a) Team name
b) Team roster
c) Number of buzzer systems
d) Number of moderators
e) If your team has fewer than 4 players, indicate whether your team would be willing to accept free agents.
f) A contact email and phone number

PRICING:
The registration fee structure is as follows:
$100 a team
-$5 per buzzer set

The minimum cost for this tournament is $80.

Additionally, we are looking for staff for this event. Full-time staffers will be paid $50 for the day.

The field is currently capped at six (6) teams. Registration fees will be accepted on-site only, in either cash, check, or venmo.

If there's enough interest, we can look into running side events at the end of the day or potentially on Sunday (dependent on room availability).

EDIT 9/4/23: Note the location/time have changed to UCSD at 10 AM.

Due to various issues surrounding the cost of getting rooms at UCLA, this tournament will now be hosted at UCSD inside of Geisel Library. Additionally, the library is only open from 10 AM - 6 PM, so the tournament will now begin at 10 AM sharp. There is still a non-zero chance this tournament (if other venues come through this week) may potentially move to another location in SoCal, but if there are any additional changes, we'll consult with all registered teams before making a change.

We're very sorry about the late changes regarding this tournament, but we're working hard to ensure this tournament will still happen.

The field cap has accordingly also been lowered to 6 teams. Given the current number of teams/free agents on the formation sheet, there is still plenty of room in the field.

Regarding this, due to the shortened time frame we'll have the rooms for, it's unfortunately highly unlikely we'll be able to fit in a side tournament.
