CREEK+ at UCLA (1/20/2024)

Post by joshxu »

Hello everyone! I am excited to announce that UCLA will be hosting a mirror of CREEK+ on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

The tournament will take place on the UCLA campus, with the exact location (and with it, parking recommendations) TBD. The opening meeting will begin at 8:45 AM, with games starting at 9:00 AM sharp. Adam Borison and Josh Xu will be the tournament directors. Any questions, comments, or concerns about this tournament can be sent to me at jjx15013 AT gmail DOT com!

Eligibility
This tournament will be run using the CREEK+ question set, which is intended for players and teams newer to college quiz bowl. All college students are eligible to play this tournament, provided that they:
  • Never have played at, or played on a team that qualified for, ACF Nationals or NAQT ICT or the IQBT Undergrad Championship
  • Never have scored ≥50 PPG in the prelims of a college quiz bowl tournament
  • Never have been the top scorer (highest overall PPG) on a team that finished in the top 30 at NAQT HSNCT or the top 10 at PACE NSC
We understand that these rules may inappropriately exclude some players from being allowed to play, so please feel free to request eligibility exemptions by emailing me! Eligibility waivers will be granted at the discretion of the TD's and the editors of the question set.

Note: This tournament is not open to high school teams or players, including those concurrently enrolled in an otherwise eligible college. Instead, high school players are encouraged to play DNE VII at Del Norte High School in San Diego, which will be hosted on a similar question set on the same day. Furthermore, any otherwise eligible college player who has already attended a high school mirror of CREEK will not be allowed to play.

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules. We also will require all teams to follow a modified version of the PACE code of conduct, which we ask teams to review before the tournament. No misconduct inconsistent with that code will be tolerated at this tournament. Any potential violations of that code of conduct can be reported at any time to the tournament director or staff. Quiz bowl at UCLA is committed to ensuring that every participant feels as safe and welcome as possible at this tournament!

Fees
Base fee: $100
New to quiz bowl discount: −$30
Travel discount: −$5 per 100 miles traveled one-way, calculated according to the "measure distance" feature between your school and UCLA on Google Maps
Buzzers: −$10 per functional buzzer system
Staffers: −$20 per staffer with a functional laptop
The minimum fee for this tournament will be $45 per team. The “new to quiz bowl” discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any mainstream collegiate quiz bowl tournament in the 2022–2023 season.

Registration
Please register by emailing me at jjx15013 AT gmail DOT com with a subject line along the lines of "[Your School] CREEK+ Registration". Please include the following information in your registration email:

- The number of teams you wish to register; this can be adjusted at any time before the tournament
- A contact phone number we can use for your school on the day of the tournament
- The number of buzzer sets you plan to bring
- The number of staffers you can provide (must have a functioning laptop)
- Any other discounts

The soft field cap for this site is 8, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist. Please register as soon as possible, but try to register no later than Wednesday, January 17th, 2023, at 5:00 PM PST; we will not guarantee that teams registering after that time will be let in, even if the field is not full.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
