Matador Invitational III [March 23rd, 2024]

I'm excited to announce the 2024 Matador Middle School Invitational III that will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2023. The tournament will be run by me, Aatreyo Bhattacharyya (Mira Loma High School). It will begin at 10 AM Eastern Time to best accommodate all time zones.

The tournament will be run on the CARD set which is of High School regular difficulty or the MSNCT playoffs. This is the perfect tournament to prepare your teams for national seasons and MSNCT due to the style of questions in the set. We will also be running a Junior Varsity division for teams that would like to participate nationally but on easier questions. The questions for this division have not been confirmed yet, more information to come. There is a small chance that the JV division may be dissolved due to a lack of interest. The platform being used for this tournament will most likely be zoom and buzzin.live, but that is subject to change to a platform like Discord.

There are no geographic restrictions for this tournament.

Game Format

Each game will be played on a packet of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses. Games will not be timed and standard scoring rules will be used. This tournament will follow NAQT rules with a slight change to the timing rules, which will allow 5 seconds before time is called after a buzz, prompt, or end of a bonus.

Statistics

We will be using TJ sheets which will allow for live statistics and possible detailed category stats.

A Note on Cheating

Given the online nature of Quiz Bowl, cheating has become much more common. To prevent this, we are requiring that ALL players must use video and show one hand in the frame at all times. We would prefer set-ups that are acceptable at NAQT nationals as outlined by their integrity policy. Players are also encouraged to remain unmuted during tossups as long as there is no significant background noise. The tournament directors reserve the right to remove any player on the grounds of suspicion at any time.

Fees

The entry fee for this tournament is structured as follows:

Base Fee: $80 per team
Staffing: -$25 per competent staffer

Staff

We are looking for moderators and scorekeepers who want to staff this tournament. All moderators not affiliated with attending teams will be paid $25. To register to staff, please fill out this form. Staff are encouraged to attend a short staff meeting before the tournament.
