SuMO IX: Nein Times (??)

Post by EastTNQuizbowl »

This is the preliminary announcement for the 2024 Summer Mixed Open (SuMO) to be hosted by East Tennessee Quiz Bowl the weekend of 7/13-14 in Knoxville, TN. We are still locking down specific (location, question sets, etc.), but we hope to have these details in place in the near future. As always, Saturday is Academic and Sunday is TRASH (Happy Trashtille Day). Due to the rising costs of doing business (mirror fees, etc,), we have made the difficult decision to increase the entry fee to $60 (CASH ONLY) per pair.

For those who are not familiar with the Summer Mixed Open, SuMO is the brainchild of former Bainbridge (GA) High School coach J. Mitchell Alday and has been subsequently run by Dr. Chuck Pearson (Tusculum Univ.) and Dren Rollins of ETQB for the past several years. The competition is a pairs format. Two players join together and are randomly paired with another pair to form ad hoc teams for the competition. The pairs are flighted based upon experience and (known) ability level with the goal of creating balanced teams. The winning team takes home 50% of the prize pool (after expenses), 30% for second, 20% for third. It's a fun and exciting competition which has grown in popularity each year.

I am posting my question here so everyone can see the response. Does $60 get a pair of players entry to both events (Sat. Academic and Sun. Trash)? Or is it $60 for each pair for each event?

Thanks

It's pay to play for each. $60 for Saturday. $60 for Sunday. We have some pairs that play both, and some who just come for one or the other. The top 3 get a decent pay out, and we usually make $200 or so after expenses. However, it does stand to reason that with a larger field we'll take home a bigger piece. We've never made a huge profit, and we're really not looking to. We try to pay out as much as we can to the field, and we use whatever we have left to build up our savings. The goal is to eventually provide financial assistance to schools who want to establish teams but lack the means to do so.
