2024 March Academic Invitational in Nevada (MAIN) - 23rd March 2024, Nevada (Mo.) HS

Post by Atlashill »

In lieu of redundant updates, information concerning our confirmed field and buzzer/staff commitments will only be posted on our announcement thread on the Missouri Quizbowl Forums. In the event of conflicting information between the two threads, announcements on the linked MOQuizbowl.com will take precedence.

The members of Nevada High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across Western Missouri and beyond at our inaugural March Academic Invitational in Nevada (MAIN), scheduled for March 23rd, 2024. MAIN will consist of a minimum of eight games for all high school teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus. There are no math computation questions.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. Tossups are powermarked, and correct responses given before the mark will receive an additional five points. We will not assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • All tossups and bonus parts receive five seconds. The moderator will prompt the captain on the bonus after four seconds.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams must use their timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.
  • Team rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring multiple teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but should have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We have secured the IQBT Regular Set #4. This is a change from our initial announcement following the postponement of KICKOFF II to next season. As of 16th November 2023, the Patriot Academic Tournament at Parkway South is also using this set in Missouri. You will not be able to attend MAIN if you compete at PAT or any other tournament using this set.

We presently have a field size of 36, with the potential to expand further if additional staff is secured. Once the field fills, additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur, with preference given to teams able to commit tournament staff. We anticipate MAIN serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship in Reston, Virginia.

Teams from outside Missouri are welcome to register; however, in order to meet the MSHSAA sanctioning deadline, registration will be restricted to Missouri teams after February 19th.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

In addition to awards for the top three teams, we plan to give an award to the top small school team, which we will tentatively define as being from a public school with no more than 300 students in grades 9-11. The exact threshold is subject to change.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $75
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Nevada High School is located at 800 W Hickory, in the western part of the city. Most lunch options will be along U.S. Route 54 and Business Loop 49.

The tournament is under the direction of Nevada High School Coach Bryan Townsend and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://www.MAINtournament.org/. (If the website does not load, click here for a direct link to the registration form.) Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Bryan Townsend at [email protected] or Kyle Hill at [email protected]. Please include “2024 MAIN” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Nevada High School on March 23rd!

At the time of this post, we have a field of 36 teams, which includes six teams on the most recent Groger Ranks. We have the space to expand to host as many as 48 teams, provided enough staff becomes available, and for those willing to make a weekend out of it, Nevada is a swift 89 minutes away from Kansas City, home to the back-to-back Super Bowl champs, the world's first stadium dedicated for a women's professional sports team, beaucoup barbecue options, and America's taco capital.

However, to avoid any major hiccups with the MSHSAA sanctioning process, we need any remaining interested teams from outside Missouri to register before Monday the 19th. If interested in competing at MAIN, please register here: https://forms.gle/VG4cPSfWgLpQw9JF9

Thank you for taking part in our inaugural March Academic Invitational in Nevada! We saw every team make their way to the win column at least once, and several thrilling contests to wrap up the day. Mexico responded to Northmont A's near-perfect five-tossup run by powering the tossup before halftime, and then the first three of the second, to stage a remarkable 405-385 comeback to win MAIN. Northmont B secured third place with a comfortable 380-250 win over Fair Grove. Lee's Summit West, Clever, Rockhurst, and Springfield Central (in order) finished fifth through eighth. Skyline was our small school winner, making their way into the top consolation pool to finish 11th overall.

Camden Williams of Mexico A was our top individual player with 143.3 points per game, followed by Braden Cantrell of Lee's Summit West with 87½ ppg. We've uploaded stats to the HSQB Tournament Database: https://qbst.at/8860/
Categorized statistics will be available at a later date on the scoreboard file.

We appreciate the willingness of our tournament staff for spending all or part of their Saturday to make this event possible: student staffer Logan from Jasper; coaches Marteen Nolan of Crocker, Karen Hays and Sandra Laws of Diamond, Nicholas Penton of Forsyth, Kayla Froemming of Hillcrest, Seth Brummond of Lee's Summit West, Spencer Fish of Liberty North, Dale Schenewerk of Mexico, E "Bing" Bingham of Northmont, Leo Horner of Rockhurst, Nevada R-V faculty and staff including Jessica Baker, Tammy McAllister, Peggy Pennington, Amanda Pollock, Karl Sherman, Amy Smith, and Tina and Scott Sudkamp; Emily Lewis of Crowder College, alumnus Aiden McGrath, and Jeffrey Hill and Michael Menkhus of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance.

I also wish to express my gratitude to the eagerness of Nevada's scholar bowl team, including coaches Bryan and Erin Townsend, for stepping forward to hosting what I believe is the first MOQBA-certified Saturday tournament along Interstate 49. This much-needed event provided not only an opportunity for teams in West Central Missouri to compete closer to home, but also a pivotal cross-circuit challenge between the Southwest and Kansas City. I'm hopeful that Saturday's tournament will develop into a mainstay event in the next few seasons, attracting more teams from Western Missouri and beyond. Additional thanks go to NHS principal Robert Miner, activities director David Hawks, superintendent Dr Tyson Beshore, and everyone at Nevada R-V Schools for hosting the region's young scholars this past weekend, and for their support of Scholar Bowl.

The top six teams should be receiving bids to the National Scholastic Challenge, set for June in the DC area. Whether your next competition is districts, another tune-up tournament, or nationals, I wish you all the best as the season wraps up, and look forward to seeing you in Nevada next year. If you have any questions or need to follow up on your invoice, please let Coach Townsend or me know. Until next time, I close as always with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
