On Studying Science and VFA

Post by quizbowlcaptain »

I know we had an infinite amount of these last year but...

DO you guys have any good science/ VFA study guides? I card using Anki and mostly study using Qwiz Camp study guides and the NAQT VFA Frequency lists.

There is nothing better than taking field trips to local museums and doing guided tours. With regards to the scientific perspective, it's also quite a good reminder that people who stare at paintings for too long (at least in the historical sense) tend to go a bit nutty.

Quizbowl is also an activity that incentives and rewards curiosity, especially in the mundane or overlooked. Coffee table books are chock-full of reference material which can make for great guided browsing sessions and which encourage people to build upon the foundations from sources like ELA readers or journal proceedings.

Google Arts and Culture, certain browser extensions, and YouTube guides like CrashCourse are your best bets to build proficiency, but in terms of mastery, you'll really have to learn to read the visual arts as one studying Fine Arts in the UK would say.

And don't be afraid to take a break--ANKI is a resource best used sparingly and with spaced repetition between carding binges--as the greatest minds of our generation have. It's a lesson I am learning right now, and which could serve anyone who feels a bit overstimulated (which applies to most quizbowlers at one point or another) quite well.

Agreed. QBReader freq. lists are amazing. You could also be a try hard and card everything from a particular subject (which sucks but it's working!)
