Re: 2024 HSNCT Discussion
Thanks to NAQT for putting on another great national! I had a few notes about the questions, but first I wanted to share my appreciation for the liveblogging/photography/social media team. I also loved seeing the little things that were improved since last year, like the pencils, better app, and live updating scoresheets.
I greatly enjoyed a lot of the set, especially the "We Real Cool" TU (and more generally all of the poetry content), Boeing TU, Zapruder film TU, airlines bonus, and OEIS bonus part.
Could I see the tossups on Tybalt (R6), Chicago (R8), 1988 election (R9), Slovakia (some afternoon round), Bali (R16), rats (R16), James Earl Ray (R17), love (R24), Borges (R25), and cubic (R25) please? Also, could I see the MBTA bonus (R21)?
Some random notes: I felt there were a few harder lit answerlines, like "The Blue Hotel" and "The Gold Bug." Also, while I enjoyed the cat theme of the Murakami tossup, it felt a little fraudable/guessable. Maybe this could've worked better as a tossup on cats? The bonus about dancing/moving on stage felt very hard. There seemed to be some overlap with the Gulf of Oman being mentioned twice. There were two comp math bonuses with the same function (x^3-4x); there was no content overlap but it did seem a little strange. I want to stress that these were fairly minor issues and that for there being so many packets and questions, everything was smooth and playable.
Also, on a format note- I found it interesting that my team (Belmont) had five "play-up" games in a row. That is, the rest of our prelim rounds after 12 were all against teams with one more win than us. I know the field size didn't work for a perfect, exclusively same-record matching, but this seemed a little egregious.

Re: 2024 HSNCT Discussion
The lowest moment of my tournament was knowing the entirety of Marching through Georgia and forgetting the title of the song in Round 22. I will never let myself live down that moment. I was working my way through the "So we made a thoroughfare for freedom and her train, sixty miles in latitude three-hundred to the Maine" until I realized I was running out of time and panic settled on Maine instead of the answer, Georgia. Which was obviously wrong since there were no civil war battles in Maine. That was an awful mental sequence from me. We wouldn't have won that round either way, but I am disappointed.
Also, could we get the Wendys tossup? Thanks!

I wanted to select these questions to discuss as two I liked and two that I thought had issues in their construction that would be worth nothing for writers who read this thread.
The Zapruder FIlm TU was a quintessential HSNCT tossup to me. It is a more challenging answerline, yet one that frequently comes up in something the field will likely have a deep knowledge of - the Kennedy assassination. The length of the HSNCT tossups really helps this one too: its just the right length for all the clues to be evocative and neat while also not needing "filler" clues or bulky language. Great first-line, and the end of the question does a good job of throwing enough clues out there for teams to make connections quickly.
I loved the theming and execution of the waves tossup. It did a great job at being upfront and forward with world art in a way that let it use geographically-isolating terms early but not be transparent. Again, Hokusai is a pretty well-mined artist for high schoolers, so I thought this question did an excellent job of choosing neat, deep clues but also being convertable by most, if not all, rooms by the end.
The French-Canadian question had a really well-chosen theme and I thought the clues were all really good: however, this question played poorly because of how it end: narrowing down the answerspace with its giveaway of Quebec, which eliminates answers like Quebecois or Quebeckers. I would have said the former if I was playing this question. What happened in my room is that I had a player buzz (after the other team negged) with "French speakers" so I prompted into "Quebecois" then I erroneously prompted again for an answer of French-Canadians, but afterwards, decided to not accept the answer and encourage a protest (which was moot, but would have been denied). I think saying something like "what ethnolinguistic group prominent in Montreal" or something else that doesn't narrow down answers with the giveaway would have helped the play of this question greatly.
The harpooners tossup was again a great conceit with well-chosen clues that I enjoyed reading, but fell short because of its execution. Namely, the fact that there wasn't directed prompts. The phrasing "specific job" isn't clear: to a player, "being a hunter of Moby Dick on the Pequod" is very specific! But this answer would have just prompted again since it didn't say "harpoon." My general advice is that if a question has to say its "specific," the clues alone are not specific and need to be re-examined. Perhaps this question could have been done on "harpoons" cluing Ahab's as well, or accepting "the crew of Moby Dick."
Anyways, those are some thoughts I had - I appreciate the writers and editors for making a great tournament.
