Minnesota 2024-25
A repost from the end of the 23-24 thread, but here are the rankings Aaron Marchand and I formulated for the beginning of the upcoming Minnesota season:
The Top Dawgs
1. Wayzata A
The good ol’ A team from Peony Lane is going to be the best team in the state next year, without a doubt. Until someone truly starts to be better than them, they are undisputed top dawgs. –Andy
The Challengers: The teams that will be in the mix for a state title next year.
2. EP A
This is what I mean when I say Arjun is about to enter his villain arc. The young blood at EP is going to have to step up and give him some support but Arjun is very likely going to be a strong favorite for top individual player in the entire state. A hard carry is not necessarily a recipe for success (let us just ignore Buffalo Grove for the sake of outliers not being indicative of an overall trend) but Arjun is vengeance. Let him cook. –Andy
3. Wayzata B
They’ll still be stacked. ‘Nuff said. –Andy
4. Tonka A
Do you want to play a HSNCT playoff team that only lost a single player? Didn’t think so. With noted strengths and history and science, along with incredible rising stars (seriously, Mihir and Liam’s meteoric rises need to be studied) combined with previously strong players in Tyler Dodge lead to an incredibly strong team. The only reason they are not ranked higher, is while Tonka had a great run at HSNCT, the lack of powers (only 5) left something to be desired. –Aaron
P.S. Nobody should be surprised if this team ends up winning State in 2024-25. –Andy
Don't be surprised if Wayzata A loses to some of these teams
5. Wayzata C
Some of their players will potentially be moving up to fill the holes left by Owen, Nithin, and Liam on the top two teams, but again, they will still be good. –Andy
6. Tonka B
Yeah, this team has all the trappings of a SHOCKINGLY good team. They sneakily got 5th at state champs, (beating EP A and Providence along the way), have young players who will continue to scale, AND they beat Wayzata A last year. Be wary, this team has the ability to go on a run. –Aaron
7. Providence A
Providence this year was, well……………………………… an enigma. Looking to next year, Providence loses core player Nathan Ward. However, Amory (MNQBs Top Freshman in 2023-24 according to community poll) will have another year to improve. Additionally, incoming seniors Sam and Genevieve are both incredible players and Providence will likely have an additional strong 4th. This already won a tournament last year, and looks to improve and look to the future. -Aaron
The Mixed Bag: We aren’t fully sure what to expect, but these teams strongly round out the group of EXPECTED relevant teams (of course, who knows who else could step up next year because predictions are stupid anyway)
8. Wayzata D
Again, it is Wayzata, they will generate a good team. I can't predict Wayzata D’s roster but trust me it will be good. -Aaron
9. Tonka C
Did you know that at the start of next year, Tonka C will likely have the 4th highest scoring player at MSNCT last year and arguably the best prospect MNHSQB has seen in years? Well now you do. Say hello to Yan-Ru Cao. Given that MSNCT tracks well to HS regs, a strong performance often indicates strong HS performance. With already impressive underclassmen this year including Gus Sullivan, Van Le, and known West Division All-Star Michael Luo, Tonka C can make a deep run similar to the one Providence made at GINVIT 2023 and potentially pull off some early upsets at SOCIAL and Roses. Even if Yan-Ru moves up to Tonka A or Tonka B, this team will still be able to pull its own weight as the 2023-24 rookie class continues to improve. –Aaron and Andy
10. Edina
This team is mostly a KB team and as such, no higher ranking can be justified. However, if this team returns to tournaments, they have the potential to challenge any team on this list. Impressive performances at League, only losing Palmer Monsen, and the fact that Edina is the preeminent KB power give this team incredible potential. –Aaron

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
Look at these guys predicting next year’s circuit even though they won’t play in it. Here’s a ranking from a guy who will actually be in the trenches. Plus, I’ll add my own little flair so it won’t be the same stuff we’ve heard over and over.
After everything, still the top dawgs
Wayzata A
Zata A and B will lose a combined 3 players to graduation. Out of their top 5 teams, they’ll lose only 5 players to graduation. Wayzata will continue to dominate the circuit, although I will note that most of their top players are rising seniors, so maybe they could finally lose in 25-26. But for now, a team that will most likely consist of Richard, Sriram, Ben, and Ananth will continue to be good.
The Contenders
Wayzata B
Gonna be honest, this team has a harder to predict roster than Zata A. It should definitely include Kevin, Abhinav, and Ritwik, and if I had to guess they would also call up Alex or Tanush, though Navin is a potential call up as well. Nonetheless, this team, despite the loss of one of their top players, will still be the second best in state.
Minnetonka A
This is my first real controversial pick, but I think Minnetonka A will be the 3rd best team in the state next year. Tonka A has even less problems with graduation than Wayzata. Using their state rosters, Tonka would only be losing one player to graduation out of their top 2 teams. Now unfortunately, that player is the assaulter of buzzers himself, Andy. But remember, Tonka B, a team of all sophomores, finished 5th at state, with Tonka A taking home 4th. This team is gonna have the depth to replace Andy, and their excellent rising junior class will continue to be shown, with players like Mihir, Liam, and Cooper continuing to improve.
Eden Prairie A
Arjun will be the best player in the state next year, hands down. However, it’s hard to predict if that will actually lead to success. Remember, Tonka B beat EP A at state. Arjun is going to need some support from EP’s rising sophomores if they want to contend next year. It’s hard to predict if EP’s sophomores will develop like Tonka’s did, but it’s not hard to imagine that Arjun plus some solid second and third scorers, whoever they may be, will contend for a state championship. The loss of Vineel is sure to hurt, though.
The other HSNCT qualifiers
Wayzata C
This is the biggest hater pick I have, but I think I can justify it. Zata C will likely lose 2 to 3 players due to callups, specifically their best player by the end of the year, Ananth. Now Wayzata has great team depth, which is why I think Wayzata C will still be relevant, just not on EP A or Tonka A levels.
Minnetonka B
Time for me to continue to yap about Tonka’s phenomenal rising junior class. While Tyler will likely get called up to Tonka A, this team will continue to perform well. Rian, Alex (me), and Jacob will be their most likely starters, plus a strong science player like Ani, Michael, or Yan-Ru by the end of the year. Look for them to continue to perform well.
Providence A
What to say about Providence that hasn’t already been said? They’re quite the enigma. Sam and Amory will get one more year. That duo alone, plus what are guaranteed to be solid 3rd and 4th scorers, will be able to contend. I’m excited to see how they develop.
The other good teams
Wayzata D
There is no way I can predict this roster, but trust me, they will be good.
Minnetonka C
What Andy and Aaron said. Yan-Ru plus Tonia’s rising sophomores will definitely be able to compete at regs-level tournaments. However, Yan-Ru’s likely call-up by the end of the year lead to them not being ranked higher.
Edina A
Once again, what Andy and Aaron said. Edina’s focus on KB will hurt their ranking, but at tournaments they attend, they’ll compete.
Honorable Mentions: Chaska A, Burnsville A, and Wayzata E

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
Man typing in the forums from mobile is tough, I’ve been trying to do this 3 times now and I accidentally exited :(. Thanks to Andy and Aaron for starting this post and good luck at college. Here are my rankings.
TIER 1
Wayzata A
This team from my inside sources (joke) is gonna be Richard Kevin Ananth and Sriram. They cover all the big three categories well and science they are gonna have locked. In addition, they cover all the little categories really well. Overall this team is gonna do awesome
TIER 2
Wayzata B
I’m assuming this team is gonna be Ritivik, Ben, Abhinav and someone else but I don’t really know. This team is gonna do great like usual so they deserve to be herez
Tonka A
Andy developed his sophomores well and they also put in a ton of work this year. Liam, Mihir both won scoring awards at state iirc and cooper is very good at history. From what Alex said if Tyler gets moved up to A this team is gonna be very solid. Mihir could be right up with Richard and Kevin in terms of science coverage, Liam will probably be the best RMPSS player in the state, Cooper will be top 3 in history in the state and I’m guessing Tyler might do Literature? Overall this team is gonna do very well.
Providence A
I know people have put them in the tier below but man we cannot ignore how good amory Kaufman was on A sets this year. He averaged 3 powers per game at league and was the leading scorer there and is definitely gonna be a top 5 player in the state next year. I think he takes a big leap and so do his teammates and I definitely think they will be a super solid team next year.
Eden Prairie A
EP A will be good. How good, I don’t really know at his point. Like everyone else as mentioned, our sophomores are gonna do well. I know one thing for a fact, this year at hsnct the team depended on me to get majority of the tossups, I believe this will not happen next year and we’ll have a well balanced team led by me.
TIER 3
Tonka B
Tonka has so much talent it’s insane. Micheal Luo and Yu were very impressive this year in high school and middle school respectively. Rian and Alex are also probably gonna compose this team so they will be super solid. I will say tho, EP A didn’t have a full roster (I was duoiing!!) at state so can we forget that ever happened (this is coping btw). Very excited to see what this team will do
Spectrum
Joseph Ambrose could lowkey lead this team like how amory did for providence last year. I’m not sure about his teammates but I’ve staffed multiple middle school tournaments and he played rly well, racked a lot which could prove to not work at the high school level but we’ll see.
Wayzata C
They’ll be good and this will be the last wayzata team cause I don’t wanna rank another one lol.
Eden Prairie B
I’m so hyped for our B team!! From what I’ve analyzed, their scoring is gonna be really balanced if everyone studies over the summer. I think this team will shock everyone and do well but for now I’m gonna leave them down here.
Edina A
They’ll do well like usual but how well idk so I’m just gonna drop them off here
HM: Zata D, Tonka C, Burnsville A
I’m very excited for my senior year of quizbowl and hope to see you all in social in 4 months!

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
I got rolled at NASAT and have nothing left to do right now. Wayzata POV tierlist incoming. If there are any issues or disagreements prove it next season.
For context my career is me playing SOCIAL and losing to Kauffman, going to league for one day without knowing that there was no negs, training arc in India and moving up into Wayzata C for State and HSNCT.
Wayzata A
1. Wayzata A team will consist of Richard, Sriram, a lit player, and will have a fourth player who is either A. Kevin Qiu B. AFA/VFA warrior or C. Owen Liu's spiritual successor.
Wayzata B
2. Wayzata B is likely Abhinav, Ben Stras, Rick, and Tanush. Ben/Abhinav could possible go A team as VFA/AFA warriors and have Kevin Qiu replace them on B. No matter what happens they will be a powerful team with a lot of knowledge.
Kinda Ranked Teams
I am not giving them numbers but the higher they are, the better. It is all up to the QBreader/Anki cupid to see who comes out on top
Eden Prairie A
Powering a lit tossup against Arjun Vivekraj at McQueen is a memory I cherish more than any birthday I will ever have. The AnkiDemon himself will return next year with his own handpicked team to cover any of his weaknesses. I am putting EP over Minnetonka because I know Arjun is going to grind in the summer.
Minnetonka A
Minnetonka A and Wayzata C had a cutthroat race to the podium last year. Andy P. may have lost the battle at State, but he might spiritually win the war with Mihir, Liam and Cooper. With Minnetonka having a rising Junior renaissance, it will be fun to see the battle renew again.
Wayzata C
People might underrate this team because Ananth Ramsankar will not play for it anymore, but I think they lack the facts and information I have.
Fact: Yuv Magan spent 1 hour and 20 minutes every day in Chem X semester 2.
Fact: Yuv Magan spent 1 hour and 20 minutes every day in Chem X playing QBreader
If they really wanted to they could easily become a contender for third place or even second(Note the Wayzata C vs Wayzata B record)
Wayzata D
There were two Wayzata Cs in the 2023-2024 season:
1. The team that won third at State: Alex, Yuv, Surya(Tishe wasnt there but he would have been C)
2. The team that got 65th at HSNCT: Navin, Tanush, Ali
Navin and Ali have deep knowledge and thrive at higher difficulties. With the performance at HSNCT I expect them to come back to the Minnesota circuit with nothing but a desire to win and an eye on their future Wayzata A throne in 2026.
I also have secret info from the upper echelon that a young recruit could possibly provide generalist Wayzata D needs to become a contender for third...
Minnetonka B
The spirit of Andy P. guides these young juniors to become another team of crafted generalists. If 2025 goes great for the Tonka we may see a 2026 where Tonka A and Tonka B parallel Wayzata A and B. I played with Rian today and I think Minnetonka B will terrorize the underclassmen of Wayzata.
Providence A
Providence isn't below the other teams, and is rather outside the ranking system. The fate of Providence A depends on the whim of Amory and Sam: either stay as the team that causes upsets or transform into a team that beats everyone so often no one bats an eye at a 400-200 game against Wayzata B.
Cannot be Ranked
They either have people who may/may not return to quizbowl, I didnt play against them enough, or the amount of potential there is hard to quantify.
Hudson A had a fantastic run with prominent Wisconsinite Aaron Marchand and Graham. Any young Hudsonite with life glimmering in their eyes could very easily waste it on Anki and lead another great team.
Chaska
Burnsville
BSM
Parnassus
De La Salle rarely pulls up but they have depth.

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
Quick rankings change, turns out Yan-Ru Cao is going to Wayzata now. Effectively a Wayzata team (likely either C, D or E I am not too aware of team compositions next year) can be moved up in the rankings and Minnetonka C can be moved down a spot or two

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
the only based rankings IN YOUR AREA
1. Wayzata B
Wayzata is a school that is HARD TO LOVE since it's stayed at the top for so long. Regardless of my personal feelings for the school, watching them makes me want to WHISTLE, and trying to challenge them is dangerous, like PLAYING WITH FIRE is. Beating this team should make you feel like THE HAPPIEST GIRL.
2. Wayzata L
I put this team in second because it seems like every game against them must be played AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST, and it like I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. After every game I play against this team my team and I tell them how we're CRAZY OVER YOU like we're LOVESICK GIRLS.
3. Wayzata A
Wayzata A always seems to STAY as a contender for the best in the state; it's like its players are FOREVER YOUNG. I haven't made a TALLY of their wins, but they seem pretty numerous. They are not as highly ranked as they have been in previous years, maybe because their not MNQB's TYPA GIRL anymore. However, this definitely is a team READY FOR LOVE next season.
4. Wayzata C
This team is REALLY good. Do people want to play against this team? For me, HOPE NOT. Some of this team's buzzes are PRETTY SAVAGE, almost like they're saying HOW YOU LIKE THAT?
5. Wayzata K
Although not as good as the previous teams, being matched up against this team is basically a SEE U LATER. You might LOVE TO HATE ME for putting them this high, but YOU NEVER KNOW what this team can pull off.
6. Wayzata P
A strong team in its own right; if you don't take every opportunity against this team, they'll give you a SHUT DOWN. In my personal experience, its like eating SOUR CANDY and being injected with PINK VENOM.
7. Wayzata I
Putting this team here, you may say, "YEAH YEAH YEAH, there's no way this team should be this high." Yet I have to disagree. This team's stats make me feel BOOMBAYAH, like I'm eating ICE CREAM on a hot summer day.
8. Wayzata N
If you don't watch out this team might hit you with the DDU-DU DDU-DU before you can react. This team could develop into a powerhouse that, when met with adversity, can KICK IT out the way. I BET YOU WANNA avoid this team.
9. Wayzata K
They impressed me so much I put them twice for THE GIRLS! I might have to KILL THIS LOVE for Wayzata K, or my rankings might be messed up. On second thought, they are my teammates, so we may have to KISS AND MAKE UP.
Takeaways
I'm excited for the next year of Quizbowl although some of the seniors are GONE, which means there may be some people who need to SOLO (hopefully MONEY is not an issue for them). With the teams jumbled up it really feels like there are ALL EYES ON ME. The next season will be a challenge I'm a FLOWER that needs to stay ON THE GROUND through a tornado. To everyone reading this, I hope YOU & ME have a great season and everyone becomes a LALISA (Luminous And Lively Inspirational Star Academic).

Hello Everyone!
International Academic Competitions is looking for a host for the Minnesota regional competition this season. Our host schools earn between $600 and $2500, plus concession and lunch sales. This money can go towards travel costs, tournament fees, team shirts, or whatever else you need.
For our regionals we need 10-15 competition rooms, a large meeting area (auditorium or cafeteria), and at least one school employee in the building all day. Students K-12 compete against players their own age in Science, Geography, and/or History. The top three in each subject win medals, and the top 50% in the field qualify for nationals.
These regionals are great fundraisers, and the more moderators a school provides, the more they will earn. IAC will send a director and statistician and will handle all logistics.
Please let me know if your school is interested: [email protected]

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
Predictions based on wins per ten
Looking at how teams perform in previous years, it becomes clear that rankings of the top X teams could be reiterated into predicted wins per ten (PWT). PWT is a tool that allows us to assign teams to values without implying superiority (a 6-4 team can smite a 9-1 Goliath AND lose to three 7-3 teams and the assigned WPT is still sound). We can disprove/proven PWT scores by the end of the year at State and Snow Cat.
WPT can have issues with large schools as new players may rise through the ranks. C/D teams can become "worse" as key players are called up to A and B teams.
Now my WPT scores:
9 wins
Wayzata A
8 wins
Minnetonka A
Eden Prairie A
Burnsville A
Wayzata C
Wayzata B
7 wins
Providence A
Eden Prairie B
Minnetonka B
Wayzata D
I did this because I don't want to study Hamlet or be productive

Re: Minnesota 2024-25
I thought I would post some of my thoughts on a few teams after SOCIAL, so, without further ado...
Wayzata
Wayzata A was as dominant as ever, with all four players having 15+ powers. While they're not as technically "specialized" as last year, the whole point of quiz bowl specialization is to cover as much content as possible with as little overlap as possible, with depth being an added bonus. The fact that Wayzata A can claim all three above should strike fear in the hearts of other MN teams.
Wayzata B was predictably excellent. In particular, Tanush Thimmasani (22/19/9) was particularly outstanding and could slot very nicely into Wayzata A next year. Not much else to say, Wayzata B runs like a metronome, what with their consistent and balanced excellence.
Yan-Ru Cao is already terrorizing the NAQT science canon in 9th Grade (19/10/4), and whether he stays on Wayzata C or not, I have the utmost confidence that he will only get better from here. The rest of Wayzata C were also impressive, and the team actually produced the second-highest PPB (22.30) in the field.
Eden Prairie
Arjun had an incredible performance (as expected), with a superb power rate (% of TUH that were powered) of 21.6%, clearly cementing himself as the player to beat in the race for the MN individual crown. However, even with Atharva Sarmah and Anish Peri combining for 20 powers, they surprisingly spluttered out in the first round of playoffs. Given that the "question" facing Eden Prairie before the season was depth, which they seem to have aptly answered, I think it's just a fluke.
Also, I'd like to highlight Eden Prairie B's performance. They had some crazy first-line buzzes on their way to 7 powers and a victory over us, and I think their future is bright despite the departure of Arjun next year.
Burnsville
Burnsville, to me, was the real shocker of SOCIAL. Anthony Cubias has strong general knowledge, but to me it was the emergences of Xavier Sachse and Samuel Morgan that made Burnsville so competitive, as the two combined for 35 powers. Having never played against an iteration of Burnsville anything like this new version, I unfortunately can't comment much more on their team composition, but any team that can curb-stomp Minnetonka A 510-85 is a team to watch-and watch out for-over the course of the season.
Minnetonka
Minnetonka A was (no way to mince words) strangely inconsistent. There were times when they were showing flashes of just how good they could be, but puzzling results like a 85-510 loss to Burnsville seem to indicate that they have a way to go to truly challenge the Wayzata status quo. Individually, Rian Mathew (25/14/8) was extremely impressive, and he should be high on the list of the best players in the state. Frankly, I expect Minnetonka A to grow more consistent over the course of the season and show how good they are, and I think they'll shatter my label of "inconsistent" as soon as the next tournament.
Minnetonka B was very solid when we played them, and their discipline and depth of knowledge definitely could bring them far if one of the top contenders has a bad day. Not a ton to say, because I feel like I've been writing for two hours at this point, but that's no disservice to Minnetonka B. I could say more good things about them, I'm just tired.
Providence (us)
Well, I had a terrible day, with my buzzer control degenerating into that of a middle schooler (seriously, I could have gotten 8 or 9 more powers if I had waited more often and heard more than five words before buzzing), and I expect better from myself. My teammates, though, were excellent, with Sam being the steady force at history he always is and Matthew going wild in the second half of the tournament. Anthony also had some clutch pulls on bonuses. I'll be better next time-watch out!

Wayzata B is pretty good at quizbowl and I'm just a master choker. Also yeah the sophomores are good at the game m.Vainglorious yet Victorious wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 8:04 pm Eden Prairie

Thought I would just provide more thoughts about Minnetonka as a Tonka B player. Inconsistency was a problem, with the first Burnsville match in particular being a good example due to negging and overall blundering. However, if Tonka A is able to play like they were able to in playoffs, you’re looking at a state title contender. While the final game against Wayzata A was disappointing, being able to knock off an undefeated Wayzata C and exact revenge against Burnsville was impressive nonetheless.Vainglorious yet Victorious wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 8:04 pm

As for Tonka B, I was actually top scorer, getting top 15 overall, but it’s clear I could work on my powers compared to other top players and I’m starting to become something of a playoff choker, with Jacob carrying us in our close loss to Burnsville. Gus was impressive, and seems to answer questions people had about our lit/fa coverage. Ani was great on sci bonuses but as always just needs to be more confident on tossups.
Both Tonka teams got over 20 PPB, and Tonka A had the 3rd(?) most powers I believe, as their P/20 was better than any Tonka team had in any tournament last year. Came really close to qualifying 3 teams for nats but I’m sure we’ll get there. Excited to see what Tonka A can do with Mihir added to an already excellent roster (as some of you may know, he was taking the SAT on the 2nd). Overall a good start to my junior year of quiz bowl!

Sheesh! I have no idea how I missed Minnetonka A being down one of their best players! To your point about Minnetonka A (and B) already being better than last year, I agree. I genuinely think that this year might be the most competitive and highest-level MN QB season in recent memory (ever?). Someone who has more knowledge on the history of MN quiz bowl can correct me.KingPengy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 3:21 pmThought I would just provide more thoughts about Minnetonka as a Tonka B player.
