Hosting my own tournament (probably not this year but next year)

Post by IWantTheHiggsFieldToBeZeroForFun »

So my entire state doesn't have a middle school regional tournament to go to nationals, so would I be allowed to host one with permission of my school district? Also how would the process be? Any help is great guys, thx : D.

The short answer to this is probably "yes, with some effort."

What state are you located in?

There are no rules about who can host a tournament. If you can get questions, a facility, teams, moderators, and buzzers, then you can host a tournament. That is often easier said than done. For it to be an automatic NAQT MSNCT qualifier, you need to use NAQT questions.

Im in colorado and the closest thing we have is called "Brain bowl". I might try to contact the people who run that and make it so the quizbowl program can integrate with the already existing brainbowl program.

The people who run Brain Bowl think that Brain Bowl is totally awesome and that changing it in any way or integrating with anything will be harmful. (They are wrong.) See if you can contact somebody affiliated with the quizbowl team at the University of Colorado about running tournaments in Colorado.

Maybe us Arkansans should try this with the programs in Arkansas? Harding is decently active (and ran their NAQT tournament in October) and UArk is doing decently in ACF tournaments. That could be two NAQT events every year..then if we could get UALR to do one as well?..

Yes. The difference between one pyramidal event and none is enormous in terms of progress.

If it helps, NAQT generally offers a free set of questions in an area which had no qualifiers in the previous year. According to their website, it appears the entire state of Colorado would be eligible for this. Trying to convince someone to host a tournament might be a tiny bit easier if there isn't a question fee to pay.

A lot of the question here appears to be about hosting a tournament, and I think the advice here is good for that, but I do want to add that if your goal is just to go to nationals you can qualify by playing online (like this tournament), or you can apply for a wildcard to be able to play nationals without having a local tournament to qualify with.
