I hated negging you guys for that one because I know what it's like - it's happened to me as well at Ultima. Even worse is the "buzz in after part two of a three-parter" that plagued me about half a dozen times at last year's tourney.JohnandSlation wrote:Two part!!!
Given: Ecclesiastes
Correct: Genesis AND Ecclesiastes
I'm still kicking myself for that...
At the Speedway Shootout in NC.
Something like: The common name is required for this sporting event. When a team from the city...
Me: "Subway Series"
Correct: Miracle on Ice
I thought for sure my coach would revoke my lightning round privlages after that (I went on to become the neg champion.) Quite possibly my worst neg ever.
Although this one is close
At Ace Camp:
Given: Robert Frost
Correct: The Quran
And who can forget the time I rang in with Gogli bodies instead of Golgi bodies to blow a shutout on the 19th question of a 20 tossup format.

Oh geez. Another good one I heard about yesterday was:link5333 wrote:At the Speedway Shootout in NC.

Answer: pointillism

The question says something about dots of primary colors.... but still.

It's sort of a theme on my team that whenever there is a question on George McClellan, I wil neg with one of the following:
a) Stonewall Jackson
b) Robert E. Lee
c) Edgar Allen Poe
d) William Tecumseh Sherman
This is because they invariably use the opener clue related to when McClellan graduated from West Point. I always instinctively buzz at that point, and always give a general that isn't him.
This isn't that funny by itself but if you consider that it's happened at least 20 times without me getting it... yep...

swwFCqb, you cannot post about NAQT questions before the end of the year. I'm sure this is an inadvertent mistake.
MOD see above ^^^^
But in practice:
Correct Answer: Anne Frank
Answer Given: Adolph Hitler
The first clue talked about being in hiding toward the end of WWII, but the pure irony of the neg is what makes it bad.

Guessed: Holden Caulfield

A teammate of mine at UVa. on 10/11, during a quarterfinal game against RM A:
Answer given: King Abdullah II
Correct answer: The Rock
Different teammate in a previous playoff round:
Answer given: Dutch East India Company
Correct answer: British East India Company
This was after the question had mentioned "Cornwallis," and a number of other distinctly British (or at least unmistakably non-Dutch) names.

My room did that one as well...a closer version of the text:NCRedhawks wrote:(paraphrased) "This person kidnapped a movie star for his country..."
*buzz*
Given: Borat
Correct Answer: Kim Jong-Il
When you or I enjoy a movie, we may see it again or buy the DVD. When this man enjoys a movie, he may abduct the director and lead actress to build his country's film industry. (continues into text about nuclear proliferation)
Practice is time to sit back, let loose, buzz on first instinct, and of course, make hilarious negs.
A pretty hilarious one was when a teammate (strifeheart) buzzed in early on a question (answer: Sauna) and negged on "Tarred and feathered." It would have been even more hilarious if I hadn't been right behind him with the same answer
One time practicing NAQT questions there was a leadin about a title character and a girl who "does ballet." I buzzed with "Sk8r Boi by Avril Lavigne" thinking this is either going to be the best power ever, or quite possibly the worst neg ever. Luckily it was right. Not exactly a bad neg story, but I definately was afraid I'd never live it down if I was wrong.
