NAQT Sectionals SE at UTC 2/10/07

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Academic Trivia Association will host NAQT Sectionals Southeast on Sat., Feb. 10, 2007. This is an academic collegiate quizbowl tournament aimed at four-year schools, and offers teams a chance to qualify for NAQT's Intercollegiate Championship Tournament in April.

For NAQT Sectionals Southeast, separate titles will be awarded for Division I and Division II, as well as a title for the top all-undergraduate Division I team. For further information regarding eligibility, rules, etc., check NAQT's website:

http://www.naqt.com/

Tournament headquarters will be 129 Grote Hall on the UTC Campus. Driving directions are below. Registration will begin at 9 AM EST on Sat., Feb. 10, with all teams expected to be present by 9:45 AM for announcements. Tournament play will begin at 10 AM.

The SCT entry fee will be $120 for the first team from a school and $100 for each subsequent team. We also offer the following discounts:
- $10 for each competent full-time official provided by the school
- $5 for a working lockout buzzer system
- $20 for submitting a blind round of high school questions, for use at UTC's March high school tournament, by Wed. 2/7/07.
- $40 for a "new school" (defined by NAQT as teams from a team is from a school that has neither competed in nor hosted a Sectional in the last two years)

Each school will also receive, at no additional charge, a copy of the questions used in their division (after the tournament, of course -- otherwise, that'd kind of kill the suspense, wouldn't it?)

To the surprise of no one, Charlie Steinhice will be tournament director.
To register or for logistical questions, contact us at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right on Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right on Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Grote and Holt Halls is on the right. Enter Grote by the door next to the dumpster.

From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 West; directions from there same as above.

From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above.

From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there.

NAQT Sectionals SE at UTC 2/10/07: early field info

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

There's still plenty of time to register for NAQT Sectionals Southeast at UT-Chattanooga on Feb. 10. Just to get the ball rolling, here are the (sketchy) field details we have so far:

Alabama: at least 2 teams (divisions TBA)
Florida: 3 teams (1 div. I, 2 div. II)
Florida State: 1 team (div. I)
Georgia Tech: 1 team (div. II)
Kentucky: 1-2 teams (1 in div. I, any others TBA)
Mississippi State: 1 team (div. II)
Tennessee: 1-2 teams (divisions TBA)

If that sounds more like a lineup for football bowls than for quizbowl, Berry is probable and we've also had inquiries from some smaller schools. We'll also be polling the delegation at Sword Bowl this Saturday; most of those teams haven't told me their SCT plans yet. Stay tuned for further bulletins.

NAQT Sectionals Southeast field update

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

The field for NAQT Sectionals Southeast (at UTC 2/10/07) is starting to fill out more, though the exact count is still a little fuzzy. Here's what I have so far:

Alabama: at least 2 teams (divisions TBA)
Berry: >=1 team (div. TBA)
Florida: 3 teams (1 div. I, 2 div. II)
Florida State: 1 team (div. I)
Georgia: 3-4 teams (1 div. I, 2-3 div. II)
Georgia Tech: 1 team (div. II)
Kentucky: 1-2 teams (1-2 div. I)
Mississippi State: 1 team (div. II)
Shorter: 1 team (div. II)
Southern Virginia: 1 team (div. II)
Tennessee: 1-2 teams (divisions TBA)
Vanderbilt: 2 teams (1 div. I, 1 div. II)

So I count 18 teams minimum, with several still pending and no word yet from some of the usual suspects. Stay tuned...

Alabama: 3 teams (3 Div. II)
Berry: 1 team (1 Div. II)
Florida: 3 teams (1 Div. I, 2 Div. II)
Florida State: 1 team (1 Div. I)
Georgia: 3 teams (1 Div. I, 2 Div. II)
Georgia Tech: 1 team (1 Div. II)
Mississippi State: 1 team (Div. II)
Shorter: 1 team (1 Div. II)
Southern Virginia: 1 team (1 Div. I)

Glad to see Southern Virginia making another appearance on the circuit. I'd be curious to know why they chose to go to Chattanooga instead of making the 3 hour trip to Fairfax.

Tennessee and not DC

We have non-quizbowl related commitments near Johnson City on the Sunday after Sectionals...that is why we will be traveling to Chattanooga and not to George Mason.

Any chance we could see SVU and/or Liberty at VCU's tournament March 10th?

(okay I admit we want revenge, especially for this statement on Liberty's website: "All three Liberty teams competed in the second tournament held at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia where they won against William & Mary." which is only 1/100th of the story and a purposeful misportrayal of the facts that makes it look like we lost to and finished behind all 3 of their teams and they won the tournament, but still...)

Just wanted to say that the UTC Sectional ran smoothly all the way through. For the most part the readers were excellent, as our A team averaged 21 TU. The quality of the teams simply amazed me, as I've mostly played only on the CC circuit, up until this year that is. The day went EXTREMELY crazy, in terms of teams losing unexpectedly in many rounds. Overall the experience was very fun, for all of Alabama's teams, and we look forward to seeing many of you in Minn.

Echoing geekjohnson, thanks to the UTC people for running a great tournament and keeping things moving so we could get through a bunch of rounds in a fairly reasonable amount of time.

RESULTS: NAQT Sectionals SE at UTC 2/10/2007

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

Congratulations again to South Florida and Alabama A, winners of Division I and Division II (respectively) at NAQT Sectionals Southeast, held at UTC Sat. 2/10/07. Full results and stats follow below, but first some gratitude is in order.

Our tournament staff, which ranged from veteran readers to quick-learning first-time scorekeeper/timekeepers, did an outstanding job. Thanks go to Dave Leach, Scotti Whitmire, Markus Iturriaga, Richard Dunlap, John Kilby, David and Rachel Moore, Nikki Poarch, Jacob Vannucci, Ruth Jackson, Ashley Rousselle, Eric Fox, Wally Edmondson, David Amis, Whitney Oakes, Chuck Pearson, and Dren Rollins. Special thanks go to Wally for setup & training for scorekeeper/timekeepers; to Rachel in her debut as a UTC stats demigoddess; and to the ever-versatile Nikki, who took over gameday logistics so I could moderate full-time and kept things running smoothly despite absentee teams and a buzzer that started smoking.

And of course thanks to the folks at NAQT for providing the questions and logistical support that make their SCT a joy to host, even for those of us who only break out the clocks once a year.

Now to the results...

In Division I, South Florida took first place outright. Florida A defeated Vanderbilt A 285-270 in a playoff to take second. Florida State finished fourth in Division I and was the top Division I Undergrad team.

In Division II, Alabama A won outright. There was a three-way tie for second, which was resolved by playoff. Florida B defeated Vanderbilt B 305-250 and Georgia B 440-95 to take second. Georgia B was third, Vanderbilt B fourth.

I think we (MSU) get the Inconsistency Award, finishing 5-6 despite beating #2 Florida B and losing a 5-point heartbreaker to #1 Alabama after leading by about 150.

Anyhow, it was a great tournament. Many props to UTC.

We've got a good claim for inconsistency too. Take away that massive total in the (-5) column, which averages to about 4/game, and things are different. Congrats are in order, though, to South Florida and U of Florida on their great performances. Aaron from UF is quite the player too, whom I hadn't seen around before. Thanks to UTC and everyone for running things smoothly. Some rounds suffered from a lack of tossups heard, but most were pretty good.

Very well run tournament. The smoking buzzer incident was quite funny. Who knew The Judge could ignite once exposed to static electricity from a wool jacket.
I haven't seen a buzzer since June, so this was a lot of fun.

Where did this Aaron character come from? I was very surprised to see that Vandy didn't finish second, so I imagine he must have put up quite a performance.

I was pretty impressed by the DII field (I can't speak to DI, I didn't moderate there). I hope at least the top four teams end up making it to the ICT, they all seemed to be pretty close in performance. Had MS St. been able to put up 10 points on their last bonus in the last round, we would have had a four-way tie for first.

I have the same question. All I know is that he's a grad student in English, and I haven't seen him at a tournament before. I got the impression that he's fairly new to quizbowl, but hopefully the UF folks can shed some light here. In the double RR, we beat them handily both times, but in the tie-breaker for 2nd/3rd, I think he had something like 6 powers on, unfortunately for us, a pretty lit-heavy round. We had the lead going into the final question, but he powered a Shirley Jackson tossup to win.

Aaron played with us last year as a Graduate Student in Comp Lit. He was at Brown before Jerry started the quiz bowl team there, so last year was his first year of intercollegiate competition. I believe he averaged some 50+ points a game at ICT and 60+ at NE SCT. He is a very very good player with very deep knowledge. The Dartmouth team owes him thanks for making us better by destroying us in practice twice every week.

To say the least, I am not surprised by the results.

Yeah, I believe he was an undergrad here. Too bad I missed out on having him as a teammate.

This Aaron character weighs in

I'm a grad student in English at UF, focusing on comics and media studies. I did quiz bowl in high school (St. Louis Park, MN) where I was pretty successful on the local circuit, though I never qualified for nationals. (If I had gone to nationals, it would probably have been :chip: - I never heard of NAQT until I was already in college.)

I went to Brown for undergrad, but unfortunately I graduated the year before Jerry and Micha started the quiz bowl team. And as was already mentioned, I played last year at Dartmouth, although my ridiculously busy schedule prevented me from playing in any tournaments but SCT and ICT.
