The Ocean Lakes Scholastic Bowl team would like to announce a tentative date of Saturday, March 24, 2007, for their first attempt at a quiz bowl tournament. We will tentatively be using NAQT set IS-62. More details to come within the next two weeks pending the school's approval of the project.

The Ocean Lakes Scholastic Bowl team would like to announce the first-ever Dolphin Academic Tournament. This tournament will take place at Ocean Lakes High School in scenic Virginia Beach, Virginia on March 24, 2007. This event will be an official, NAQT, untimed 10-question half using IS-62. We will cap the field depending on how many volunteers we can garner from our own school and outside.

We will have 6 preliminary matches and at least half the field advancing to a playoff system (depending on how many teams register). At least the top playoff bracket will be double elimination with the final 8 teams, and once again depending on how many teams, we would either add play-in matches or consolation playoffs.

Fee structure:
$70 base fee per team
-$10 per working buzzer system
-$10 for the 1st competent moderator/scorekeeper
-$5 more for additional moderators/scorekeepers (one-time discount)
-$5 for teams from outside VA
-$5 for teams registering before March 6

+$20 for a hard copy of the questions
+$10 for teams that register after March 17
+$20 for teams that cancel Thursday or Friday before the tournament or don't show up and don't have a very good excuse

Minimum fee per team: $35

Now, selling points:
1) Besides W&M's tourney on 3/3, this is the only tourney in this area of VA.
2) We hope to attract a good field from a traditionally strong region for quiz bowl.
3) As always, the top 15% of the field qualify for the NAQT HS NCT in Chicago, and pending affiliation, the top n places (depending on the number of teams) will qualify for the PACE NSC in Ann Arbor, MI as well.
4) There will be prizes for the three top scorers (and of course, Neg King) as well as shiny trophies for the top three teams.
5) And finally, when it's not raining, Virginia Beach is a pretty nice place to visit.

Finally, how to register:
E-mail me (Kunle Demuren) at [email protected] , and let me know your name, your school's name, how many teams you will bring, and which discounts apply. I will try to send invitations via e-mail through my coach to all VHSL teams, so please spread the word to teams outside VA and private schools.

Thanks, and we hope to see all of you here!

Note: Ocean Lakes will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items during the course of the tournament.

We've finished our snail mailings of invitations, so I'm assuming that everyone is waiting until right before the early deadline to register. Even notification of interest would be helpful to us as we continue to plan for this event.

Thanks!

Payment info:

You can either bring the check with you on the day of the tournament or mail checks to: Nancy Moskway-Vadersen, Ocean Lakes High School, 885 Schumann Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. Please make checks out to Ocean Lakes High School and write "DAT 2007" in the memo line.

By the way, we are planning to start registration around 8 AM, with rounds starting about 9 or 9:30.

Right now Maggie Walker and Kempsville have expressed interest. So, admittedly, we don't have much of a field to update on. Remember the early registration deadline is March 1.

Princess Anne will likely be sending two teams.

Also, it'd be nice to know an approximate end time for the tournament, as that's the same night as PA's Ring Dance.

Thanks.

Actually, make that above time about 5:30 PM. We'll try to get anyone who has to go to Ring Dance out of here as fast as we can.

Reminder: the early registration deadline is March 1 at midnight.

Two things:

1. We will be selling a hard copy of the questions used in the tournament for $20.

2. I am extending the early deadline to March 6 at midnight. The $5 discount per team will apply until them.

Field Update:
Lake Taylor
Norfolk Collegiate (2)
Kempsville
Poquoson
Maggie Walker (4)
Princess Anne (2)
Freeman (2)

Lake Taylor dropped one, but Norfolk Collegiate added two. Once again, we welcome registrations from teams formerly registered for the ACT II. Right now, I may need a scab team if we stay at an odd number.

I promise, once this is over, I'll stop this extravagant over-posting.

IS-62 Comments: Either our team was asleep/lethargic without one of our players or the beginning rounds were very odd in general. Later rounds seemed to have better quality questions, but almost all of the rounds seemed to suffer from imbalanced distributions in categories. This was proposed as contributing to Freeman's upset of Maggie Walker A in round 2 of the playoffs, though I'd guess by observing other games our A team played there were probably some really stupid negs/bonus answers too.

Of course, none of this was under Ocean Lakes' control. Got to play a lot of games even in this small field (our A team played 13 games) and the delays were not substantial. The high number of games made the tournament finish kind of late but I prefer playing a lot to going home early, personally. Overall good job with the tournament, another well done inaugural.

As for winning the neg prize, I guess that's what negging four times in one game does. None of mine were intentional though, however stupid they may have been. I was quite amused that our coach also got a prize for this achievement of mine, when he has stated that he is embarassed when one of us gets the highest amount of negs. Sorry Dr. Barnes!

My bad Matt, I've edited it. NAQT needs to reassess how they assign powers, because the last two sets I've seen/played have had some ridiculously easy powers. For example, in the first MW A vs. MW B match, 9 of the final ten questions were powered. I know Maggie Walker is good, but that is quite ridiculous.

In my opinion, the IS set wasn't bad, aside from a few strange bonuses (and tossups, for that matter). As to the fact that a lot of questions were powered in the MW A/B match, I think that was just us actually being awake rather than lethargic as in other parts of the day. This set was a vast improvement on some of the other ones (probably because it was completed earlier). Power marks were fairly standard, and there weren't really any hoses.

Overall, I thought the DAT ran very smoothly considering some of the inexperienced moderators (we had to help a few out along the way) and many giddy girls staffing. It ended at a pretty sane time for 13 rounds. The only suggestion I have is to give a little less time for lunch. In doing so, you could've probably cut a half-hour or so off the end of your day. Also, I don't know if you told the moderators to do so or not, but some were rereading the question once one team had negged; others were not. As with VHSL, at times it got annoying, especially when one team negged towards the end and was forced to sit through the whole thing again. Other than these remarks, I don't really have anything bad to say. Nice job.

The reason our A team lost that game to Freeman was simply because they outplayed us. They repeatedly out-buzzed us and had very good bonus conversion. I don't recall that we had all that many negs in that game. It was not as though we were beating ourselves. Certainly we missed Mark, but we were racking up some pretty big scores with just the three players. Freeman is a dangerous team. They are a little inconsistent. But, when they are firing on all cylinders they are capable of beating just about anyone. It all depends on the packet that is read. That game was certainly a quality win for Freeman, as was their victory over Walter Johnson at W&M. I have not followed Freeman all that closely this year, but those two games certainly stand out in my mind. Freeman has been out there, competing in lots of tournaments, and their hard work is starting to pay dividends.

You must realize that we do not have a team nearly as large or as interested as yours, Lapego, so at least half of our staff had to come from outside quiz bowl experience. We did the best we could to train them, but obviously we could make them all into perfect moderators/scorekeepers. That being said, thanks for the suggestions. That reading thing with the interrupts was partially our fault. We just didn't want anyone to skip parts of a question or make some mistake like that.

Well plus NAQT games are just prone to flukes a lot since it's more speed than knowledge based. At SVU we played on this set and lost in OT to Liberty B after torching Liberty A. IS-62 did seem a lot better than IS-66 though, except I heard that the last round (rd 11), when we had a bye, was exceptionally easier than previous rounds, causing us to have lower ppg than we normally would, though thankfully ppg didn't matter. (By the way I'm a lose it if anyone talks smack about us playing on NAQT questions - at SVU I was the only player on the team who had ever touched a buzzer outside of BoB/VHSL/other local league play.)

Kunle, you could have also saved a round by doing double elimination NAQT style (like I did at Col. Ebirt), but I guess you wanted to do it VHSL style and have two teams with byes at the same time. Whatev...

Does this mean I need to run a moderator boot camp in the summer? Sigh... the things I do for everyone...

We did the best we could to train them, but obviously we could make them all into perfect moderators/scorekeepers. That being said, thanks for the suggestions. That reading thing with the interrupts was partially our fault. We just didn't want anyone to skip parts of a question or make some mistake like that.

Kunle, I thought you and your staff did an excellent job running the tournament. Going through 13 rounds with a leisurely lunch period in under nine hours was remarkable, especially for a first tournament. There were no significant problems with moderators and no detectable delays. Personally, with the large group I had to feed, I was glad to get a longer lunch period.

We were happy to come down to support your inaugural tournament. Hopefully you will make it a tradition. I also hope that you will be able to attract more teams in the future. Any team, especially from Eastern or Central Virginia, who did not attend, missed an excellent opportunity to compete in a quality tournament.

Also, now I want to further commend you, Kunle, for the quick posting of the stats. Too many TD's (including our own) are slow to post stats. And, alas, sometimes they never get posted.

Thanks, Dr. Barnes, for your kind remarks. I guess yesterday was a win-win for you, with two MW teams taking first and second. Although, I admit, I got a little defensive earlier, I would still like to know anything we could have done better so I can pass it on to the team members who (I hope) will be running the DAT next year.

Sorry if I made the moderator thing sound worse than it was. The "inexperience", for lack of a less extreme word, mainly resulted in a more variable pace to games. Even that is nitpicky. What I meant to say in my original post was that, despite the "inexperience" of the moderators, the tournament ran very smoothly. Delays were little to none in number. As to improvements, Matt's suggestion about the playoffs is one thing I'd probably support. Any team that has two byes is going to be rusty in the chamionship game. Other than that, there was really nothing missing from this tournament. I'm glad we decided to come.

True: they came very close to beating us. One of their guys went on fire towards the end of the match and had 3 very early buzzes. One of them was a very nice power, but the other 2 were unfortunately near misses. Still, given the information that had been read in the question and the closeness of the neg and the correct answer, it was an impressive display of depth, and those answers could just as easily turned the game to their side instead of ours.

Well, thank you both for the compliments but we (especially me) aren't really too dangerous a team. We have large subject areas that we often completely lack substansial knowledge in (but we do know our trash. We hope we didn't come off as too revelant in our post-match celebration; we kinda got caught up in the moment.

One thing worth noting is that this was only the third time we have even played deep in a NAQT playoffs, after last year's NAQT states and Col. Ebirt (where the questions are much harder than the earlier ones). We have not had many chances to be exposed to those levels of questions, and that is why although we can make an early playoff push, we usually falter later on, because we just don't have the experience with the tough, endgame questions. We almost had a chance to take a second one from MLW A, but my brainfart-neg kinda killed all chance of that.

Oh, and we didn't mind the bye, our nerves were so shot at that point, we really needed to sit back a bit.
