ANNOUNCEMENT: RC Cola Classic (4/29/07) at UT-Chattanooga
UTC A.T.A. will host the eighth annual RC Cola Classic trash tournament on Sun., April 29, 2007, in scenic Chattanooga, Tennessee. This is a one-day trash tournament open to all players. Packet submission by each team is expected, but (as usual) there's a loophole. As with past editions, this will be paired with the Moon Pie Classic collegiate academic quizbowl on Sat., April 28.
CONTACTS: For registration, please e-mail us at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. For packet submission, send them to SteinhiceC [at] comcast [dot] net.
TIME & PLACE: To help our long-distance friends, we'll begin registration at 8:30 AM EDT on Sun. 4/29/07 with play starting at 9 AM. Based on typical field sizes, we may finish as early as 5 PM, usually more like 7 or 7:30 PM. Tournament headquarters will be Holt 124 on the UTC campus (see below for directions.)
ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to anyone regardless of current or former academic affiliation, or lack thereof. assuming they fulfill three basic tasks (let us know you're coming, pay fees, and arrange for a packet as described below.) If you want to make yourself available as a free agent to join a team -- or if you have a partial team in need of free agent help -- let me know and I'll figure something out.
FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Packet submission is expected unless other arrangements are made in advance (see guidelines and timetables below.) Teams may have up to four players each, with alternates OK as long as there are no substitutions in mid-match.
Depending on the number of teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round robin. If the field is large enough to justify two brackets, we may try to split the field into two divisions based on experience level. When you register, please give us some idea of how much/little trash experience your team members have. More importantly, the sooner we have an idea of how many teams to expect, the sooner we'll know how to schedule. So if you're coming, TELL US!!! As always, getting me your clever team names in advance will also help.
MUSIC ROUND: UTC being UTC, we will have a musical interlude for your competitive pleasure. If you're interested in running it, let us know.
FEES: Fees assume packet submission and offer generous discounts for services rendered:
Base fee: $80 per 3- or 4-person team; $60 per 2-person team; $40 per one-person team.
All three rates assume a usable packet of 25 tossups and 25 bonuses, blind to all other teams and meeting the guidelines below, is submitted electronically (preferably in MS Word) by midnight Sun., April 8. First-time trash teams are not *completely* exempt from the packet requirement, because we want to encourage everyone to write questions, but we will accept a smaller contribution of 10 tossups and 10 bonuses from novice teams as sufficient to meet the packet requirement.
Minimum fee after discounts: $40 per full team; $30 per 2-person team; $20 per one-person team -- or $0 if you write enough high school questions for our future use
Penalties: + $15 for packet received after April 8, but before midnight Sun., April 15
+ $30 for no packet at all (please arrange with me in advance!)
Discounts:
- $10 if at least half the team members also played at the Moon Pie Classic on 4/28 or the Dennis Haskins Open (our spring high school tournament) on 3/3.
For an experienced reader for RC Cola itself, or for a full-time official at the Moon Pie Classic on 4/28, we will knock $10 off the fees and another $5 off any packet penalties.
For each full round (or equivalent) of original academic questions for us to use at our fall high school tournament, submitted electronically by 4/27/07, we will knock $10 off the fees and another $5 off any packet penalties. [Note: we'll continue to give discounts for these questions even below the minimum fee. In other words, if you write a trash round for RC Cola and a whole lot of high school questions, you could conceivably play for free.]
PACKETS: First, some format preferences: If at all possible, please send me packets in MS Word or RTF. Please place the required parts of each answer in bold, please put answers on a separate line from the question, and please precede them with the word "Answer:". If you want to save me some more time, make the font 11 pt Times New Roman and the margins 1/2" all around.
To allow for bonus laming and to simplify editing of the inevitable numerous duplicates, each packet submitted needs to contain at least 25 tossup and 25 bonuses. Visual, tactile, and even gustatory bonuses will be accepted if possible; due to equipment issues, audio questions won't. We will consider physical challenge questions, provided they do not conflict with giving every team a fair shot regardless of individual members' physical limitations. Keep in mind when you are preparing packets and considering unorthodox bonuses that these questions will be used at mirror events elsewhere in the country, and whatever we do here needs to be replicable there.
General distribution guidelines (in each case, we need that many tossups and that many bonuses):
3 - 4 Movies
3 - 4 TV
3 - 4 Sports
3 - 4 Music
[Note: for the four categories listed above, please make sure you have at least one pre-1990 and at least one post-2000 of each.]
At least 1 each, but no more than 2 each, of:
Food & beverages
Trashy "literature"
No minimum requirement, but no more than 2 each:
Videogames & computer games
Other games
Other computer stuff
Trashy current events
Comics
Gadgets
Road trip effluvium
Consumerama
Anything else you think of is fine as long as there are no more than two questions per as-yet-unnamed category.
LODGINGS: We were unable to secure a block of rooms from the Clarion, so if you need lodging; let us know and we will try to make discount arrangements elsewhere.
.
DIRECTIONS:
From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right onto Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right onto Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Holt is on the right.
* From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I- 24 West; directions from there same as above.
* From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above.
* From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there.

Normally I'd just shoot an email to ask but the WM mail service is kaput today for me, so...
W&M is seriously considering coming to Moon Pie, and if we do we'd probably stay for the RC Cola too. So I'm wondering, if we did that would it be possible to write 20/20 for the Moon Pie instead of 10/10 Moon Pie 10/10 RC Cola?
Also, is there any possibility of the RC Cola ending by 3 pm? If not I'll abandon all hope of not spending Sunday night and missing class Monday. Ahh the sacrifices for quizbowl...

RC Cola @ UTC 4/29/07: novice division info, field update #1
As you probably know, UT-Chattanooga is hosting a weekend of lip-smacking quizbowl fun in late April. We'll host a collegiate academic tournament, the Moon Pie Classic, on Sat. 4/28/07, washed down with an open trash tournament on Sun. 4/29, the RC Cola Classic.
We have enough novice teams signed up for the RC Cola to determine that we will definitely split the field into two divisions based on trash experience. This includes 3-4 high school teams so far. (An aside to those still working on packets: Since we'll have minors present, please try to keep the packets at least at a PG-13 level.)
For info on the Moon Pie, see the Announcements and Results (Collegiate) forum. If you are planning to attend both tournaments but only feel like you have time to write one packet, we'd prefer that it be the trash packet; right now we have more freelance packets for Moon Pie than we do for RC Cola.
To register, or for more information, contact us at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com.
The RC Cola field so far is at 16-18 teams -- 7 upper division, 5-6 novice division, 4-5 division TBA.
Upper division:
Bush et al
Georgia A
Kilby et al
Leach et al
LSU
South Florida
Virginia Tech A
Novice division:
Georgia B
Ooltewah HS A

Soddy-Daisy HS A
