Cancel Bowl 7: NEW DATE

Post by mcoen »

Hello all,

Cancel Bowl 7: You Will Find True Love On (or a Week After) Bastille Day will now be held on Saturday, July 21. Still plenty of room for more teams, if you've got the day free and want to come to Boston.

I'm also looking for some freelance packets to help bulk out the tournament, given the likely smallish field (which currently stands at four teams). Those willing to write a pack will get a full set of packets used in return. If this sounds like something you'd be willing to do, please drop me a line (cancelbowl at yahoo dot com).

Details still available at http://www.geocities.com/cancelbowl (though it won't be updated to reflect the date change until tomorrow).

Cancel Bowl 7: Further Update

Post by mcoen »

Hello all,

With just under two weeks to go, we have six confirmed teams for
Cancel Bowl 7: You Will Find True Love On (or a Week After) Flag Day.
There's one more unconfirmed, and certainly room for anyone who may
still be interested.

We're also still looking for freelance packets, for which you'd get the
other packets from the tournament in return.

If you'd like to play, write, or want more information, feel free to
drop me a line at cancelbowl at yahoo dot com, or check out the web
page at http://www.geocities.com/cancelbowl.

A mod should probably update the thread's title to indicate it has been moved to the 21st.

Cancel Bowl 7: Quick Result

Post by mcoen »

The Overcats capped a pretty good week by winning Cancel Bowl 7: You
Will Find True Love On (or a Week After) Bastille Day, beating out Le
Type Reponse in the final.

Thanks to all who played and staffed, as well as to Robin Richards for
supplying extra questions.

Thanks to everyone who made this tournament happen. It was exactly what a midsummer guerrilla-edited trash tournament should be, and I enjoyed it immensely.

I'd have to say that this tournament was better than I thought it would be, although I had pretty low expectations going in. Several of the teams wrote pretty good packets, it's just a shame that the last 3 or so team packets (and the few mirror packets we heard) were generally not so hot.

To avoid really bad questions for next time, I'd probably not let teams write list tossups. One list tossup is too many at a tournament, and there were probably five that we heard during the course of the day. Seriously, how hard is it to add some context to, say, a tossup on Ben Stiller?

You might also want to remind some teams that starting practically every clue with "he was born here and he went to high school here" is supremely unhelpful, especially when you're trying to keep the tossups relatively short.

I thought the videogame distribution was a little lacking (rare was it for us to hear 1/1 in a packet), but since there was no formal distribution for the "other" category I'm not really going to complain too much about that.

By the way, I recorded these matches and they will be up on the podcast eventually. I just posted the Chris McCray episodes yesterday, so I need to get through Sun 'n Fun before I'm able to put these up.
