Princeton's PARFAIT III (11/17/07)

Princeton College Bowl is pleased to announce that PARFAIT III: Live Free or Die Hard will be held Saturday, November 17th on the lovely Princeton campus. PARFAIT is an MACF academic tournament open to all teams affiliated with a college and other teams at my (almost certainly granted) discretion.

This year's PARFAIT is, like last year's, NOT a packet submission tournament. Packets will be written by Princeton plus a couple of mirroring schools which are still being worked out. Central editing will be done by Princeton.

The distribution will be as follows:
Literature [5/5] (At least 1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, 1/1 World)
History [5/5] (At least 2/1 or 1/2 American, 2/1 or 1/2 European, 1/1 World)
Science [5/5] (1/1 Bio, 1/1 Chem, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 math, 1/1 Astro/Earth/Computer)
Religion/Mythology/Philosophy [3/3] (1/1 each)
Fine Arts [3/3] (at least 1/1 Art, 1/1 Music)
Social Sciences/Geography [2/2] (at most one geography question)
Choice [1/1] Cross-category questions are encouraged; must be academic.
Trash [1/1]

The advertised difficulty is that of last year's edition, which is to say, harder than ACF Fall, but not much harder.

Fees are still being worked out--they will be posted here as soon as we nail them down.

As before, travel discounts are available for teams planning to travel a significant distance to attend. If you fit that qualification, contact me and we'll come to an agreement.

Fees

We have decided on the following fee structure, similar to last year's PARFAIT:

$120 base fee
$100 for 2nd team
$70 for 3rd team
$50 for 4th team

-$10 per buzzer system
$70 minimum per team

Can you clarify this a little? Brown will probably want to bring one team, and though this isn't the deciding factor for us, it would be nice to have this information.

Sure.

We are willing to give a discount of $20 per school for schools driving over 200 miles (judged by Google Maps) to the tournament. So you'd qualify for that.

Schools thinking about flying to our tournament are eligible for a larger discount, though that's probably better done on a case-by-case basis. In other words, e-mail me if you are flying here and we will work something out.

Mirrors

Just to get this out there--we are in discussions with three possible mirrors (who will each hopefully be contributing some packets): Truman State (i.e. Brainal Leakage), Berkeley, and South Florida.

The individual schools should have more info on this when/if they decide their logistics.

Okay, it appears we have had our mirror in the Southeast fall through.

If you are a team far enough away from Princeton, Berkeley, and Truman State (so as not to siphon off teams) and are willing to do some heavy question writing (or possibly pay us for the use of questions) we would love to have you as a mirror for PARFAIT III on (or shortly after) November 17th.

Early Field Update

5+ weeks before the tournament, we have these 5-7 teams:
Rutgers-Newark (1)
The Citadel (1)
Maryland (1-2)
Rutgers New Brunswick (2)
VCU (1)

Brown and Florida State have also expressed some early interest but haven't emailed me yet.

There's plenty of New England and Mid-Atlantic teams who haven't yet registered, so go for it: gdavid at princeton dot edu.

One additional note: I've been asked about a staffer discount. We're willing to offer a $10 discount per experienced staffer. (But we'd much rather you play than staff.)

Jeff Hoppes once said the same thing before ACF Regionals. If I recall correctly, he got both the top-scorer prize and the humane society person of the year award later that night.

Jeff Hoppes has this novel way of playing where he only buzzes in when he actually knows the answer. This is an approach I reject.

You can still email me after that point if you are interested, and I will put you in the tournament if we get cancellations or decide to open the field a little more.

Also, I wanted to make an early request that people please bring buzzers if they have them, and let me know how many buzzers you are bringing. You get a discount for bringing them, and it's far better to have too many than too few.

We also got some more rooms, and we're now opening up the field again. E-mail Guy quickly if you want to bring more teams, as I suspect that we'll fill up. This is shaping up to be a good field.

Yeah, as Jordan noted we have acquired a few more rooms and are opening up the field for 3-4 more teams (to 24). As before, continue to email me if you are interested in coming.

Also let me reiterate Jordan's reiteration on buzzers: please bring them if you have them, and please let me know how many buzzers you are bringing.

We can bring anywhere from 2-5 buzzers. Also, can we tentatively register a third team? I'm not sure if it will materialize or not, but it looks like we'll have at least more than 8 people coming.

Yeah, you guys can certainly bring a 3rd team. We have 21 teams at the moment (including your 3); we're shooting for 24. So definitely a couple of spots left.

(and Maryland, if you have that many buzzers, it'd be great if you could bring as many as you can. 2 is good, 3 is great, 4 is greater.)

We'd like to have 24 teams, which is about what we have at the moment, but I imagine some teams are likely to drop, and so there's a good chance you can in fact come.

This is the informational email I sent out today, in case people didn't get it.

PARFAIT will be held on Princeton's campus in the Frist Campus Center and in next-door Jones Hall. There is a campus map located here: http://www.princeton.edu/~pumap/ . The train station is labeled "Dinky Station" on the map for those of you arriving by train. (Make sure to get on the connection from Princeton Junction to Princeton if you do).

Registration for the tournament will be in the morning from 8:30 to 9:00 in Frist 302, the auditorium on the 3rd floor of Frist. We hope to start the first round by 9:30. The plan is to play 12 rounds in total (with possible byes): 7 rounds of prelims and 5 rounds of playoffs. Beyond that, there may be a further final if a team is not clear of the field.

If you have told me that you are bringing buzzers, please bring them. In fact even if you haven't told me you're bringing them, it's not a bad idea; someone always forgets and slap bowl isn't fun.

If there's anything I forgot to mention or if you have any questions, feel free to email me.

We are balancing on the edge as far as buzzers are concerned (I think we have 12 or 13 confirmed). Which means if someone forgets, or is late, or doesn't show, or a buzzer doesn't really work, etc. then we are playing slap bowl. So it would be great if you could bring extras, worst comes to worst they don't get used.

PARFAIT has just ended. Thanks a lot to all the teams who came. Thanks in particular to Matt Wiener and the various players on Cornell and Columbia who played on various teams and helped fill out the bracket so there were no byes.

Thanks also to all the Princeton moderators who came out and stayed until the end. And extra thanks to head editor Jordan Boyd-Graber.

Brief results are as follows:
Maryland A took first place with a perfect score.
There was a 3-way tie for second consisting of VCU B, Brown, and Rutgers New Brunswick A.

Approximate top scorers were Matt from VCU, Jason from Rutgers-NB, and Jerry from Brown.

Just a reminder: DON'T TALK ABOUT SPECIFIC QUESTIONS in this thread as there is a mirror in Alabama on December 8th. (though you can email specific criticisms to me).

Thanks again and I hope everyone who came had fun.

I apologize for the perceived problems in the packets; there were some real problems there, particularly packet six, which had to particularly vague questions and a wonky distribution.

There were also some typos through the packets, but hopefully not enough to trip up moderators.

Nevertheless, I hope that people like the quality questions that were there, and there weren't too many problems in between.

Thanks again to all the teams that came out, and to Matt who let me twist his arm into playing so that teams wouldn't have byes. I hope people had fun.

Stats for the playoffs still have some issues, but as I noted above, Maryland A came in 1st with a 3-way tie for second between VCU B, Rutgers NB A, and Brown. FSU was the other team in the top bracket, making them 3rd.

Cornell had a fifth player, Rob thats not in the stats. We substituted out, but he was playing in 5-6 games. Once, when he was sitting out, he went to play for VCU B as per the suggestion of our moderator. So... I think he's more on our team than on VCU B.
