The ultra-big VHSL results thread

Post by STPickrell »

Well as I get results I will post them. Some of these will be schools no one has heard of outside of VHSL and others will be interesting harbingers for the tournament scene.

Please be careful NOT to discuss the contents of VHSL matches, as they are also being used in Missouri. Ditto for the 36 conference matches that will start getting play next month for Missouri.

Monday October 9 was week #1 of the James River's season and Week #1 of the Massanutten and Southern Valley's season.

Amelia Co. @ Buckingham Co.

Math: Amelia 120, Buckingham 80
Science: Buckingham 110, Amelia 40
Social Studies: Amelia 45, Buckingham 40
All-Around: Buckingham 130, Amelia 80

Cumberland @ Central-Lunenburg
English: Central 120, Cumberland 10
Math: tied at 70-70 (apparently the four spares were difficult?)
Science: Central 100, Cumberland 60
Social Studies: Central 60, Cumberland 40
All-Around: Central 200, Cumberland 90

Notes:
* English was written by me from a reading list for JRD ACE
* Math, Science, Social Studies were taken from VHSL matches #1-#6
* All-Around was VHSL match #16

There are also TCAC (Tazewell County Academic Competition) matches that were earlier this week but no one has given me any results.

Byko, are you recording these results for your database? Let me know if I can put it in a format that is easier for you to digest.

I certainly can start to do that when I add some more results next week. I'm confused about the breakdown of the subject areas, though. Are these actually be played like quiz bowl matches and this is just a category breakdown on the points for each subject? The James River stuff is confusing me, I think--that's the only part that I'd be looking for any clarity as to what results are relevant.

I'll be posting as many Missouri results as I can on the Missouri board. NKC is about the only team that travels out of state before nationals though.

The James River matches consist of four category games followed by the all-around game, which is a VHSL game.

The category games are 10 directed questions per team (same as in VHSL) followed by 10 tossups. The maximum score here is 300.

The only time these teams will enter the larger quizbowl universe will be at the Region B tournament and possibly states.

The Valley District matches are just ordinary VHSL matches -- 15 tossups, 10 directeds per team, and 15 tossups, with a maximum score of 500.

I have quick Bull Run District scores/standings. I should have more tomorrow.

Rappahannock Co. defeated Strasburg 225-70.
Rappahannock Co. defeated Clarke 255-80.
Rappahannock Co. defeated Manassas Park 230-70.
Rappahannock Co. defeated Madison 240-70.
George Mason defeated Rappahannock Co. 190-180. This match was decided on the last question, and boy, was it exciting!

Mason finished 5-0, Rapp 4-1, and then the other four teams I'm not quite sure about yet. More tomorrow.

Hey Potomac Falls Dulles District Player here, I saw they changed from having 1 sports question to having 2 pop culture questions and 2 classic pop culture questions per packet. Are there still sports questions? I always nailed those. Thanks.

Both pop culture and classic pop culture includes sports, tv, movies, music, and miscellaneous (e.g. the question I wrote a couple years ago on the mullet.)

Classic pop culture is anything before this year's seniors were 18, so this year it's 1990. Things such as game rules that have stayed the same since then are usually classic pop culture.

I haven't done the exact math but it probably comes out to having a sports question in around 3/4 of the games.

Ok thanks, I think I got all but one of the sports questions in the games I was in last year, thanks. I'm captain this year so I'll be in all the rounds!

Great! If you can get results from around the district, please post them here!

Also try and get what match number was used in that particular game (it says so right on top of the question sheet).

In JRD action, Amelia hosted Lunenburg Central.

This was played on ACE meet #3 and VHSL Match #24.

I'll attempt to, but I doubt I will be able to, the way we do it is we have 3 team round robins so there are multiple sites, but I'll definitely post results from my matches and the other match at my site. I'm going on It's Academic tomorrow too. I'm excited!

The Clinch Mountain District in Region D held its inaugural Scholastic Bowl meet on 10/29. The CMD was formed this year help balance out region sizes.

Gate City comes to us from the Wise County PACE format (it was in the Lonesome Pine District and so played PACE so they could play something.) So this is the first time they've done Scholastic Bowl as we know it.

Match #1 (played on VHSL match #1)
John Battle 155, Virginia High 100
Lee County 140, Gate City 50

Match #2 (played on VHSL match #2)
Lee County 140, John Battle 130
Virginia High 185, Gate City 45

Honaker will probably be the biggest link between the wider quizbowl universe and teams in this district.

Bull Run District results from Monday, November 5. The matches were hosted by Rappahannock County.

RCHS 195 Clarke 140
RCHS 245 Manassas Park 110
Clarke 210 Strasburg 140
Strasburg 185 Manassas Park 145
Clarke 195 Manassas Park 115
Manassas Park 150 Madison 120
George Mason 340 Madison 45
RCHS 280 Madison 70
Clarke 175 Madison 115
Strasburg 175 Madison 80
George Mason 220 Manassas Park 140
George Mason 215 Clarke 165
George Mason 175 RCHS 160
George Mason 225 Strasburg 95
RCHS 250 Strasburg 140

Standings through 11/5/07

George Mason 10 – 0 (234 ppm)
RCHS 8 – 2 (226 ppm)
Clarke 6 – 4 (161 ppm)
Strasburg 3 – 7 (138.5 ppm)
Manassas Park 3 - 7 (128 ppm)
Madison 0 – 10 (92.5 ppm)

Something I just wanted to add: The Bull Run District dropped the "round robin every night policy" and now has a schedule where, for the last four nights of the season, each team plays twice or three times each night. The change was a result of, in my opinion, the logistical nightmare of five matches a night coupled with the sheer exhaustion of that.

Wow I wish the dulles district ran their season like that. We only get to play each team once and then have one tournament.

Hey, has your coach gotten results from the rest of the district? At 3-1 you guys are in the thick of the hunt but I imagine Loudoun County will be strong, and Dominion has often fielded good teams.

Have you guys thought about attending some tournaments? I have extra questions, too, if your coach wants to scrimmage Valley or Stone Bridge.

I can ask my coaches. I think they might just get emailed the standings without results but I will ask to see them. Dominion is a very solid team, I think they beat Freedom who killed us. I heard Heritage is good as well. I wish there was some website that posted the scores from our district. I'll ask about scrimmages too, thanks.

No problem! You and/or your coaches can drop me an email if you have questions. I'm allowed to give out generic advice to anyone who asks.

Some coaches like the weekend tournament thing, others might be more open to more meets during the week. Either way you want some chance to experiment with lineups and the such, and you need a mix of teams that'll kill you, teams that are about even, and teams that you'll kill.

From the Piedmont District in SW VA (Region IV)

They play a format called SCAEL (Scholastic Competition for Academic Excellence League). It is similar to the James River ACE format, except their all-around game is 10 directed questions and 10 tossups. Also, instead of 10 and -5, it's 5 and -2. Maximum score then would be 150.

Bassett travels from this district, and Franklin County is AAA but doesn't play the SB format.

I didn't write the literature questions.

Bull Run District Meet #6 at Clarke

I don't have all of the scores. I only have the ones for us/Mason. I took the rest from Mr. Pickrell's post on the next page. Our district tournament is January 19. Mason and Rappahannock have byes. Clarke plays Madison and Manassas Park plays Strasburg.

Match #25
Rappahannock 290, Strasburg 85
George Mason 250, Clarke County 135
Madison 160, Manassas Park 130

Match #26
Rappahannock 195, Madison 125
George Mason 265, Strasburg 120
Clarke 180, Manassas Park 160

Match #27
Clarke 170, Strasburg 160

That would, with gaps, make the standings:

George Mason 20 0 4920 246
Rappahannock 16 4 4485 224.25
Clarke Co. 11 9 3075 153.75
Manassas Park 6 14 2650 132.5
Strasburg 5 15 2770 138.5
Madison Co. 2 18 2040 102

Mr. Pickrell, perhaps you can fill in the gaps? Otherwise, we should be getting them sometime this week.

Also, I copied these over from Northwestern District.org:

Brentsville 13 1
Handley 12 2
James Wood 10 4
Millbrook 9 5
Sherando 5 9
Skyline 4 10
Central 2 12
Warren Co. 1 13

Their district tournament is tomorrow.

I also am aware that Liberty High School Bealeton advanced to the Northwestern Region Tournament by winning the regular season of the Cedar Run District with a 12-3 record, a tiebreak victory over Osbourn Park High School. Their district tournament is also tomorrow.

Honaker went undefeated to win the Black Diamond District (Region D) for the 11th straight year. They averaged over 200 points per game this season too.

I have Dogwood (Region B) and Tidewater District (Region A) results that I need to type in.

I have the results for most of the VHSL AAA Northern District matches & AAA Northern Region tournament matches (though in the regional tournament I only have the scores for the matches in which my team was involved), and I have listed them below.

All matches were held on January 5, 2008 at Edison HS; district rounds in the morning, regional rounds in the afternoon. 3 rounds per match: 15 tossups, 10 team-directed, and then 15 more tossups (with a 3-tossup tiebreaker, if necessary). All have bouncebacks.

Please let me know if you have any additions and/or corrections. I think Shawn Pickrell is also going to be double-checking this info and/or adding to it once he receives the "official" results & stats. Scores below are accurate to the best of my knowledge, but should still be considered "unofficial", and please note that I am missing 1 score & result for Oakton vs. Westfield, though Oakton must have won the match since they were the district runners-up. That would put them and Centreville both at 4-2, and I guess the head-to-head matchup was the tiebreaker.

The Liberty District will always be "too strong" as long as TJ is in it... that's just the way it is. Excluding TJ, the top Concorde & Patriot District teams are comparable to the top Liberty teams (...emphasis on excluding TJ).

It is, however, probably fair to say that the National District is weaker than the other three, based on the fact that both their district champion & runner-up went a quick two-and-out in the regional tournament.
