AA Dulles District Meet today:

Will Dominion win the tournament after going undefeated in the regular season and win the regular season and tournament again after doing so last year? Maybe, but I smell an upset. Park View has been in every match this season and every one of their losses has been decided on the final few questions. Freedom is also strong but is a one-man team. Pot Falls has amorris and may be able to pull an upset. this looks to be an exciting tournament. Good luck to everyone tonight!

Well, Dominion pulled off the undefeated season, defeating Park View in the final. Broad Run was third followed by Heritage in fourth. PV and Dominion advanced to the regional tournament.

Mr. Pickrell, do you have the brackets for the region tournaments???

P.S. amorris525-tell your friend zach I got the ***** question-he will know what this means...

Be careful. Those matches are being used all over Virginia and Missouri.

I don't know who will be playing whom. Have your coach (if you're from PV I know who it is) contact me so I can give her/him the name of the region TD.

Two of the district winners get a bye to the second round. I will be a reader at the Region II tournament.

I have a question. Is tomorrow the deadline for districts? If so, what would happen if the tournament had to be postponed? This is a very real possibility - Strasburg, Clarke, Madison, and Rapp are all closed today, and some of our roads are a mess. Same deal with the Shenandoah District; I know that Luray, SJ, and Page are all closed today due to the eotw blizzard.

We're in the same boat down here in SW Virginia but we have a make up date for this upcoming Monday if we get snowed out tomorrow. Maybe it's the same in your district as well?

According to our AD, Clarke (the host) says that we are still going to have it. I think that, if we don't, things could get complicated. We don't have a make-up date, and finals are next week for George Mason, so they don't want them before Thursday.

Folks -- preferably the TD for the district tournaments or the AD of affected schools -- in snowy districts should contact Lisa Giles at the VHSL.

James River District: Central Lunenburg (regular season and tournament champion), Randolph Henry
Shenandoah District: Buffalo Gap (regular season champion), Wilson Memorial (tournament champion)

The tournament is February 2, 2008 at Luray High School beginning at noon.

Hurley has one excellent player this year, with a very broad amount of knowledge, but it's his senior year in high school, so Hurley's performance will most likely drop next year.

OK, just how far does your web of informants stretch? :)

Lee's region title represents a turnaround for a program that had gone two and out at the Group AA Highlands District tournament for as long as I can remember.

They used to play their in-county Group A rival, Thomas Walker, but as the TW coach put it, 'We stopped doing it because it got to be too ugly.'

It's amazing how much you can learn from the internet and email, isn't it? Especially since, in emailing people, I can allow the guise of my mother's status as a librarian.

This Group A Tournament is going to be very competitive. 5 teams return from last year.

Is anyone going to make predictions for Saturday's State tournament? I am excited to take my team, and I am hopeful that we have a respectable showing. The Byko Ratings say we're heavy underdogs, but I don't think many of the teams at the A state are well-connected to the greater quizbowl world (in his ratings at least), so I am not putting much stock in that for this tournament.

I don't like to make predictions, because they are often wrong. However, George Mason is very good, but not of the same caliber as last year. They could very well win a back-to-back championship. They aren't well-connected to the quizbowl world mostly because their team can never seem to get together to go to a tournament. They did finish 3rd in the small school division at NAQT Nationals last year...

I'm not sure at all what will happen. George Mason is averaging 238.8 ppm in VHSL. West Point, including the results from their website, is averaging 225 ppm. We here at Rapp are averaging 217.7 ppm in VHSL. Honaker is at 198.9 ppm. Lee is averaging 194.4 ppm in VHSL it would seem. (Those without Region D results) From the results in this thread, it would seem that Radford is at 192.9 ppm. King and Queen is averaging 178.3 ppm. Auburn is averaging 168.9 ppm in VHSL. This could be one way of comparing and predicting.

The Byko rankings have us ranked George Mason, West Point, Rapp, Lee, Radford, Honaker, King and Queen, and Auburn.

I will make my predictions for AA and AAA however.

1. R.E. Lee
2. Western Albemarle
3. Heritage-Lynchburg
4. Charlottesville
5. Blacksburg and Cave Spring
7. Chancellor and Poquoson

1. TJHSST
2. MLWGS
3. W.T. Woodson
4. Hickory
5. Princess Anne and Douglass Freeman
7. George Washington and Albemarle

However, I have a habit of being wrong.

Re: The ultra-big VHSL results thread

Hmm... good question. I think in the AA and A, everything is up for grabs. In AA, it seems to be fairly even. Charlottesville seems to be the odds on favorite, even though they aren't as strong as they were last year. Heritage isn't as strong as they were last year but definitely could throw their weight around. Blacksburg has the chain mail kid who's pretty strong but RE Lee seems to be back on the map and busting up some heads. I think we have a good shot at the title as well.

A is also up in the air (Auburn took a win or two from Radford, a perennial power in A) and could belong to anyone. Rappahannock was looking pretty good too at VCU, beating us twice pretty soundly. However, I'd hate to be playing against George Mason...

As for the AAA, I have to give the nod to my alma mater, TJHSST. We played TJ A and B at the VCU tourney this past weekend and we were absolutely stunned by TJ A. TJ A was just unconscious and racked up 555 pts; of the 15 they answered, 9 of them were powered. It was absolutely sick and beating Dorman A twice is enough for my vote. Maggie Walker will give them a good run for the money though.

I guess my final prediction is that I give each of us a 1 in 8 chance of taking the title. :P

I wouldn't say we beat you guys soundly. In fact, your stats on the day are far better than ours, in terms of ppm and in terms of p/b. And I'll admit TJ A is very good, but when they played us, they negged 8 times. They still scored 350, I think. And you guys did beat TJ B, a pretty big accomplishment. I'd say you guys have a decent shot.

A 1 in 8 chance at a state title isn't so bad.

And, having played George Mason 19 times in my high school career (and I'm a junior), they cease to be intimidating. Our matches with them are fun.

I have to agree with the sentiment that A is up in the air. Radford was a young team last year, and although I haven't seen them play, I'm sure they've improved a lot. The two teams that I have seen play, GM and Rapp, are both very good this year. AJ (I think that's his name), is particularly amazing on Rapp. The GM team is definitely a step down from the one last year (I humbly admit), but when they're on form, they can blow a lot of people out of the water.

And pretzeldude had a good point about our team being rather dysfunctional about other tournaments. Actually, we're just dysfunctional in general. We had trouble getting our starters (including myself) to show up at the right place at the right time.

I'm flattered.

I completely agree. They beat us at George Mason 240-135. Of course, George Mason's team last year under the great Margaret beat us 330-100 at one match.

AHS Eagles wrote:Is anyone going to make predictions for Saturday's State tournament? I am excited to take my team, and I am hopeful that we have a respectable showing. The Byko Ratings say we're heavy underdogs, but I don't think many of the teams at the A state are well-connected to the greater quizbowl world (in his ratings at least), so I am not putting much stock in that for this tournament.
I think what's hurting you guys right now is a combination of two things:

1. Currently, while none of the losses on your record is bad, the wins aren't very good, but that's partially because...
2. The wins in the Region C tournament should count for something more than they do, but I don't have any district results at all on George Wythe, James River, and Patrick Henry.

Having said all that, I still think, just from looking at numbers, that George Mason is the team to beat, though the fact that Rapp. Co. has played them close nearly every time this year and has handed them a pair of losses certainly tells me something. I know Radford has traditionally been good--I'd guess they should be higher than their current ranking, but I don't have any more data on them. As for West Point, maybe they're about right or perhaps a bit high--once I get caught up on about 15-20 other tournaments I need to enter, I could try to find their website with results. Or if someone were kind enough to e-mail a link to me, that would help too. :-)

I'm quite amused that my order exactly matches the points per game order--I promise you, my system doesn't use actual scores to determine anything!

Some quick results from today (apologies if the scores aren't correct, I'm sure Shawn will add more when he gets home):

Group A: Radford defeated West Point, 170-165
Defending champ George Mason made an exit in the third round following losses to Lee High School and Rappahannock County.

Group AA: Charlottesville defeated Cave Spring 210-175
Cave Spring suffered an early loss to RE Lee - Staunton, but ran the loser's bracket, taking out Western Albermarle, Poquoson and Heritage before falling in the championship

Group AAA: TJ defeated Maggie Walker, I don't have the final score on hand.
Maggie Walker took a similar course to Cave Spring, taking an early loss to TJ in the second round before running the bottom bracket and coming back to the Championship match.

The final game was an exciting one. Maggie Walker held a small lead for most of the game, but TJ finished strong, winning on the final question with a final score of 225-215.

BTW, VHSL States are cleared for discussion. I know a few of the vocabulary questions were somewhat ambiguous, and there were a couple of questions with typoes.

I thought the difficulty level fluctuated a lot... there were at least three literature questions that I would expect to hear only in a PACE packet, all three of which went unanswered in the games I observed.

I can't say I noticed any typos, but I agree that some of the vocab questions were incredibly ambiguous as clues given were not necessarily uniquely identifying...

I too thought the difficulty level fluctuated a lot. Overall, I thought that most of these questions were more difficult than the 07 and 06 state questions we had been practicing on. I am quite happy that we won a match, even if we did not go very far into the tournament. Congratulations to Radford, Charlottesville, and TJ on their state championships. There is a typo in the Group A results above for round 2....
Radford 140, West Point 110
Lee 140, George Mason 125
Radford 175, Honaker 110 (elim)
Auburn 105, King & Queen 90 (elim)
I believe the 3rd match there should be Rappahannock 175 Honaker 110 (elim). Shaun may want to edit that result.

We rode on the bus with Blacksburg HS, and I think I managed to convince their coach that a round-robin tournament would be a better way to go than double-elimination. When can we get that put up to a coaches vote again?

Also, I will never-ever eat at the College Delly again. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait and ended up waiting over an hour for our food. I hope that the on-campus food court will be open next time Auburn makes a trip to William & Mary for a tournament, because I don't think the 3 restraunts we were directed to were able to handle 24 teams in one hour.

First, congrats to TJ, Charlottesville and Radford... it was good to see old students of mine from the Summer Governor School, even if they were instrumental in our defeat.

I share the same sentiments as my colleague Matt here... the difficulty seemed all over the place but maybe really easy + really hard = average. The team seemed to think that the earlier morning questions were really wild but the packets seemed to settle down as the day progressed. Did anyone noticed that?

I also agree with a round robin format of some sort with maybe a playoff system. I don't think it's very fair for some SW schools to travel 8 hours, spend a load of money of rooms and food, just for a tournament that guarantees you two matches. I think a hybrid of a double-elim with some sort of mini-round robin would be awesome by giving everybody more rounds to play and determine a more accurate final standing.

Lunch was also a mess... the hour originally scheduled was way too short and we weren't informed of the extension in time when we left. I, too, will not eat at the College Delly again as my kids ordered a pizza shortly after we arrived and by the time we had to be back at the round (about 40 minutes later), they had just put the pizza in the oven (BTW, Matt, how was the pizza? The kids were asking). We had to run back, grab some food from the vending machines, and nearly forfeited our round with Poquoson (and all apologies to Poquoson for having you wait for us  ). Half of my kids didn't even have any lunch until the whole tournament was over. I really hope that more alternatives can be provided or a longer break for lunch can be scheduled.

But despite that, I have to say the moderators were pretty good this year. The questions were fine in all other regards and the tournament was really nice and professional. Congrats to all the teams that made it there. Hope to see you all of there next year!

Agreed. We had a farily short trip from Richmond, but some teams traveled a long way to end up not playing much at all. Also, in this format, it's possible to win states by winning only four games. Having multiple byes may be a relief to some teams, but I'm willing to bet it's really boring to others. It can also affect momentum. A round robin seems much fairer.
