So, if you look under "TIT/MLK" discussion, there's some talk about a tossup on "immortality". Well, I'm hearing the question, and I'm not as good a myth player as Seth Teitler, so I don't recognize anything in the opening clues that would help me buzz in, and then it comes to a clue about Achilles having some horses with a certain property. Now, I know that Achilles had some talking horses, and I forget that two of the three were immortal but not the other one, so I use the "wait for a clue you think you know, then buzz" strategy and, you know, I think I know this clue, so I buzz, conveniently disregarding the fact that my answer doesn't make any sense with the previous clues.

Wrong: They can...talk? (That's a pretty close approximation to what actually came out of my mouth)
Right: Immortality

I'd classify this as type 4 bad neg.

From Penn Bowl--

Two that seem pretty bad, but make a reasonable amount of sense in context:

Given: Portrait of Madame X
Correct: "the nude photo of Vanessa Hudgens"

Given: Time Cube
Correct: The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even

...and one horrible neg that *only* makes sense if you were at the tournament:

Given: [no answer]

As a reminder - if you have a bad neg from a NAQT set, you cannot post it here until all tournaments possibly using it have occurred.

From a practice in which we were doing bonuses as tossups; the bonus introduction was along the lines of "Name these generals who later became U.S. presidents."

At practice this afternoon on some vintage 2001 questions:

"Quote: 'I can't hear you.'"

Buzz! Catch-22

Correct: Tom Wolfe

I personally consider this more of a hose or potentially just really bad buzz, but my teammates laughed so I thought people might find it amusing. I had about six negs today, which is highly unusual for me, so they may just have been laughing at that.

For those not familiar with Catch-22, Arfy says "I can't hear you" incessantly. By the end of the book I wanted to smack him. I hate questions that start with quotes anyway...

Teammate's Answer: Kim Jong Il

Granted, North Korea announced a few years back that Kim garnered five holes-in-one in his first round of golf. It just didn't happen when he was 2, although that may change depending on Pyongyang's mood :)

From the same practice, after reference is made to an 18th century publication referring to him as "The Sun King"

Teammate's Answer: Jim Morrison

The room cracked up for a full two minutes after that neg. Thankfully, said player had a good sense of humor about it, and admitted to not paying attention to the start of the question.

*Disclaimer: I realize that this is the HS section, but there is not section for bad negs in the college section
*Disclaimer 2: This isn't a bad neg, but rather a funny story

The other day in practice, I was reading a trash packet. The question almost goes dead, until one person on a team mutters "Springfield", which was a clue in the tossup. A person on the other team immediately buzzes in with "Bruce", which was the correct answer. When asked how he got it when he looked clueless, he replied "well, I heard him say Springsteen, so I thought I'd go with Bruce"

Here's some of the best of Watson's many negs

mispronunciations
1. Magna Carter
2. Rime of the Ancient Marina

Just absurdly wrong
Reader: She brought gifts with her on a diplomatic visit...
Watson: Nancy Pelosi!
Reader looks horrified, then continues: in the year 480 B.C. when she visited Sparta

And from a couple of years ago
She may have died from overheating

Yeah, or at least it was taught so in high school. I've personally heard it as the "Gary Powers Incident" and "U-2 Incident" (more officially the U-2 Incident, I guess, and personally more commonly, and the question did already give "Gary Powers").
