Chris and Carsten (and everyone else),

Thanks so much for the compliments about EPIC. We got some feedback both good and not-quite-as-good at the meet so it's great to hear from more of the players that competed in it. I'll take the blame for the "repeats" as I had the final job of editing the packets and caught one repeat but obviously I fanned on a few as well. This is what happens when you edit packets around midnight the night before the meet I guess.

But thanks to all who attended -- we really enjoyed having you all there!

Since a couple of posts on RATRACE got lumped into the general discussion on EPIC and such, I'll repost with some updatedness. Wayzata is sending one team of 2-4 players, Minnetonka is possibly throwing a team together last minute, and EP is now possibly attending. I think this should be an interesting tourney, as I don't know what the field will end up as with so many teams making plans at the last minute.

It looks like South will not be attending, not that that will change the strength of the field much.

It is now looking like the great RATRACE may have been caught in a mousetrap.

I am aware that Les Six may not yet include Wayzata, as our coach is as always one of the last to register teams. I'm hoping that RATRACE happens, as this is the last chance for A series fun times of which I am aware.

As of tonight EP isn't sending anyone. Michael's considering going with Igor or something like that, but they're the only two available/even considering it.

They should both go to the MCMNT mirror at St. Olaf instead, as should Carsten and Wayzata.

For RATRACE or Cvijanovich? If it's the latter, I will likely have a few open seats in my car, and can pick people up from their homes or EPHS. I believe Rob was planning to drive some HSers too. Anyone who's thinking about going and wants a ride can contact me at [email protected] or on AIM as awppengruppen, and we'll find you transportation.

Also, is RATRACE officially canceled?

He was talking about RATRACE. The closest we got to "interest" was six people led by Anant and Igor, the latter of whom was convinced to go to Cvijanovich instead. EP likely will not be going to RATRACE if it even happens. Michael and Igor will likely go to Cvi.

If you guys can get somewhere close to EP/Chaska/Chanhassen, I can pick you up and take you there. My cell is 612.270.456 (zero, just in case there is some spam harvester here). You'd probably have to start a new team, so let me make sure that's okay with Olaf.

MCMNT was a really good tournament, and I probably enjoyed it more than I would have enjoyed IS-75A. It was also cool to get a chance to play with/see other area HS players on good questions.

Any Minnesota high schoolers who aren't scheduled to play MUT with Sam Peterson...

Chris Carter and Andrew Anthony of South are putting together a second packet and looking for teammates. If you're willing to help out with some packet-writing, you too could have the experience of playing MUT. Send me an email at [email protected] if interested.

Also, it's less than ten days away from the 3/15 PACE Spring Qualifier. Please, please, please tell your coaches to get your registrations in! We need to know how many teams to expect!

Thank you.

Although it's a somewhat limited field, any predictions for the competition tomorrow. Even with the new format, I see EP A winning, Chaska a likely second, then maybe EP B, Team Plymouth, or a dark horse school that randomly rocks at PACE. I'm hoping for the best from the writers, and I know this could be the best Minnesota tournament as of yet.

So since this is a thread about predictions and comparisons...

Who all from Minnesota is going to nationals, and what are your predictions about how they will fare?

I dunno about who all is going, by i'd say for rankings:

Eden Prairie: 3
Chaska: 13
Wayzata A: 20
Wayzata B: 20 (or worse)
Eden Prairie B: 20 (or worse)
Eden Prairie C: Play offs...

I wouldn't predict that myself, but it isn't completely implausible. Really, because of Minnesota's isolation, we don't really know how strong EP is this year. I know that Micheal is great, and allegedly, Igor is a beast at science. But I don't know how this would translate to games against other top teams.

When there's no clear favorite like TJ '05, individual games on HSNCT packets can become a bit of a crapshoot among the elite teams. I wouldn't try making a real guess to an exact spot for any of the best teams, but the possibility of Eden Prairie finishing 3rd certainly seems possible and I can't imagine anyone taking issue with it.

Not really.

Look, it's well-documented in here and in tournaments that Michael's really really good and that Igor (not allegedly) is a beast at science. We also set our team up to be good at NAQT. Everyone knows that. We, unlike last year, can't assume anonymity.

I personally doubt that we can beat a team like Dorman or Whitman twice in a tournament, let alone twice in a row in an advantaged final that we'd probably be disadvantaged for, but stranger things have happened than us getting slightly better than we hope to, which would put us in the top 5.

That said, EP C is likely fight valiantly only to not make playoffs. I think realistically the only ones from MN that can are EP A, EP B, Chaska A, Wayzata A, Wayzata B, and some wild card team in there. My guess would be as follows assuming they do two byes in prelims and follow the "winning record = in" rule from last year (teams taken from NAQT's registered teams list):

EP A: 10-1, Top 3-5
Chaska: 9-2, Top 9-12
Wayzata A: 7-4, Top 20-25 (where ever that round cuts)
Wayzata B and EP B: 6-5, Top 20-25
Orono: Maybe first cut of playoffs, if not 5-6
Minnetonka A: 5-6
Edina: 5-6
EP C: Maybe 4-7
De La Salle: 3-8
Minnetonka B: 3-8
Mounds Park: 2-9
Simley: 2-9
Armstrong: 2-9
Central: 1-10
Hopkins: 1-10
Irondale: 1-10
Rosemount: 1-10

I didn't realize how many teams are signed up until now.

Who are the other two members of Eden Prairie A who are going to nationals? It seems EP has been messing with its A team in recent tournaments, so I was just wondering.

I'd like to post and praise the two high school teams that came and played MUT last Saturday. As someone with little knowledge of the Minnesota high school teams, I was really pleasantly surprised by the level of play that you guys displayed, and I look forward to playing you all again in other collegiate tournaments next year (or whenever).

I can say with great certainty (being the coach and all), that barring something unforseen happening, EP's foursome consists of Michael, Igor, Colin, and Steven. We mixed things up a bit earlier in the year to try out some things, fill some gaps when people were missing, or whatever, but those 4 have been pretty consistent for a while.

This weekend will be a lot of fun to see where EP, Chaska, and the like stack up with Dorman. Looking forward to it!

As someone with little knowledge of the Minnesota high school teams, I was really pleasantly surprised by the level of play that you guys displayed, and I look forward to playing you all again in other collegiate tournaments next year (or whenever).
Thanks, we had a lot of fun playing against you guys.

This weekend will be a lot of fun to see where EP, Chaska, and the like stack up with Dorman. Looking forward to it!
I'm afraid we won't be going.

That is quite unfortunate.

I wish I could be there to see it. Good luck to the state of Minnesota!

EP is a good team, and the stats they have been putting up are very very similar to those of Dorman et. al.

BTW- who are you/what school?

Rumor has it that the questions will suck quite a bit, and that Eden Prairie and Chaska will do really well.

Where are these rumors of bad questions eminating from? That seems like a possible breach of question security, I'm sure NAQT would like to find out about that.

But I do think Wayzata has significant home-court advantage. They know their high school, while none of the other teams do. This could throw Eden Prairie off their game.
